Ferrari AF Corse has filed an appeal after its protest against the decision by race control to extend the FIA World Endurance Championship 6 Hours of Spa last month was rejected, RACER has learned.

The race ended in controversial circumstances. A huge incident on the Kemmel Straight involving three cars — the No. 2 Cadillac, No. 31 WRT BMW M4 and No. 99 Proton Porsche 963 — prompted a red flag due to the spread of debris and damage inflicted to the barriers and catch fencing.

After barrier repairs and a full clean-up, race control made the unprecedented decision to extend the race by the length of the red flag period. This proved hugely popular with fans trackside, as it set up a thrilling finale and a shock result: a maiden overall WEC win for Hertz Team JOTA’s No. 12 Porsche 963. However, Ferrari — which was running first and second in Hypercar with its factory 499Ps at the stoppage — was understandably aggrieved by the decision.

Because the No. 12 JOTA and No. 6 Penske Porsche 963s had pitted just before the incident, they were handed an advantage when the race resumed, as all the cars in front of them in the restart queue required pit stops for fuel. This included the two Ferraris, which eventually came home third and fourth.

It was a decision that Ferdinando Cannizzo, the head of endurance race cars at Ferrari, described as “questionable” post-race.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1416]

“We feel a lot of regret because we believe the outcome should have been different,” he said.

Ferrari immediately protested the extension of the race, although this was quickly rejected by the stewards.

“The protest is not admissible based on the following: A Stewards’ decision can not be the subject of a protest under article 13.2.1 of FIA International Sporting Code,” the decision paperwork read.

That was not the end of the matter, though, as paddock sources revealed to RACER yesterday at Le Mans that an appeal process is underway. Ferrari has since confirmed this in a statement.

“Yes, we can confirm that we made an appeal shortly after the result of the protest came in,” a spokesperson from Ferrari told RACER.

Ferrari also explained that the matter will be dealt with by the FIA International Court of Appeal (the final appeal tribunal for international motorsport), with the result not expected to come through prior to the Le Mans 24 Hours next weekend.

On the other side of this, the FIA explained its decision to extend the race after the weekend: “The race session was not extended in duration, but resumed for a period of 1h44 minutes that was needed to make the necessary repairs and ensure the track is safe to race.

“1h44m corresponds to the length of the race remaining when the red flag was brought out minus 3 minutes (time from the red flag to the cars stopping on the grid).

“This solution ensures sporting fairness for the competitors, who set their strategies for a six-hour race. Cutting the race session short would mean that some competitors would gain, and others would lose as a result.”

The date for the final hearing and decision is not yet known.

Porsche stays ahead in third Spa WEC practice

Porsche Penske Motorsport’s No. 6 963 led the way in the final practice session for the FIA WEC teams at Spa, with Kevin Estre managing a 2m04.125s tour of the circuit in sunny conditions ahead of qualifying.

This time was marginally quicker than the 2m04.162s he set to go quickest in Free Practice 2, and was 0.2s up on the best time from Ferrari in this session. 2023 Le Mans winner James Calado was the Italian make’s fastest driver in the No. 51, with a 2m04.340s.

The No. 6 set the fastest Sector 1 and 2 times, while the Ferrari ended up quickest in Sector 3. Qualifying this afternoon is finely poised.

It was a better session from Peugeot in pace terms. The No. 93 9X8 slotted in third with a 2m04.357s from Mikkel Jensen. The No. 50 Ferrari ended up fourth, with the No. 15 BMW M Hybrid V8 completing the top five.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1416]

In LMGT3, it was Manthey Pure Rxcing’s Porsche that topped the times, with Alex Malykhin’s 2m20.947s during a qualifying sim. Rahel Frey ended up improving on Sarah Bovy’s qualifying sim in the Iron Dames Lamborghini to go second with a 2m21.298s.

The third-fastest time was set by the No. 82 TF Sport Corvette. The No. 54 AF Corse Ferrari ended up fourth, with the Manthey EMA Porsche completing the top five.

There were a few of issues to report in the session, the first being the Isotta Fraschini Tipo6-C stopping on pit lane at the start of the session, needing a refire. The second was an off into the gravel for the No. 82 TF Sport Corvette. Hiroshi Koizumi was aboard the Z06 LMGT3.R and ended up facing the wrong way at Les Combes and beached, bringing out an eight-minute full-course yellow period.

The No, 38 JOTA Porsche had the biggest moment, though, and suffered significant rear-right and front-end damage from a high-speed off for Oliver Rasmussen at Blanchimont. The Dane went off the circuit through the gravel and ended up getting air over the grass before taking a nose-dive. The car will require significant work before qualifying, and the JOTA mechanics were working on it by the end of the session after Rasmussen brought it back.

Moments later the Cadillac also had an off through the gravel. And finally, in pit lane, the No. 83 privately-entered Ferrari required attention to its front end for much of the session and only managed 10 laps.

The two factory Ferrari 499Ps set the pace in the first practice session of the FIA WEC weekend in Spa-Francorchamps, with the No. 50 ending up over a second clear of the rest of the field following a flying lap from Antonio Fuoco.

There should be a lot more to come from the Hypercars in pace terms though. Fuoco’s time, a 2m05.690s, is way off off last year’s pole time of 2m00.812s from Toyota. It was, however, 1.1s faster than Antonio Giovanazzi in the No. 51 sister car and 1.3s up on the Lamborghini Iron Lynx SC63, which set a highly encouraging 2m06.998s to go third overall and quickest of the LMDh cars in the field.

The top five were completed by Alpine’s No. 36 and the No. 83 AF Corse 499P, which was the fastest car entered in the Hypercar World Cup for privately funded entries.

Proton’s No. 99 963 was the fastest Porsche in sixth ahead of the championship-leading #6 factory Porsche from Penske that slotted in seventh.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1416]

Of the 19 Hypercars, at this early stage of the weekend, the top 11 came within two seconds of the No. 50’s time in the Ferrari and every car the Isotta Fraschini Tipo6-C lapped within three seconds. The entire field completely plenty of laps, all but three crossing the timing beam 30 or more times.

In LMGT3, TF Sport topped the times with its No. 82 Corvette Z06 LMGT3.R after Daniel Juncadella reeled off a 2m20.885s. The field looks well balanced at this stage, with six of the nine manufacturers setting times in the top six.

The No. 54 Vista AF Corse Ferrari ended the 90-minute session second with a 2m21.220s from Davide Rigon, while the No. 27 Heart of Racing Aston Martin rounded out the top three.

It was a more quiet start to the week for the championship-leading Pure Rxcing Porsche, which would complete 34 laps but end up seventh in the times, almost three seconds off the leading Corvette.

Free Practice 2 is set to get underway at 5:30pm local time.

DTM vet Schmid set for LMGT3 debut at Spa

DTM racer Clemens Schmid is set to make an FIA WEC debut this weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, after an unexpected late call-up to AKKODIS ASP Team’s LMGT3 effort to stand in for Timur Boguslavskiy.

Boguslavskiy is unable to take part in this weekend’s race after falling ill, prompting AKKODIS to sign up the Austrian on short notice to partner up with Arnold Robin and Mitomo Miyata in the No. 78 Lexus RC F LMGT3.

While Schmid is new to the FIA WEC, he has plenty of relevant GT3 experience to draw from. He currently competes in DTM with Dörr Motorsport and is the reigning World Challenge Europe Endurance Silver Cup champion.

However, this switch means Robin will be racing with two new teammates this weekend as Ritomo Miyata is competing in the seat usually filled by Kelvin van der Linde. This is because the South African has been called up to stand in for Peugeot Hypercar driver Nico Muller in the Formula E race this weekend in Berlin with ABT Cupra.

“Timur is OK but he didn’t feel good and isn’t capable of doing a double stint, for instance,” Robin explained to RACER. “So he admitted he was unable to compete in this race. It’s not good news for us before Le Mans — it makes it difficult. But he will be back at Le Mans.”

“It’s going to be a challenge. Ritomo knows the car well and has been so successful in his career, he’s a perfect teammate, while Clemens is someone I don’t know. Obviously he has good experience in GT3 and currently races in DTM with McLaren. But this is a very late change — we only found out this morning. But I trust Jerome (Policand, ASP’s team owner) and Toyota. He was on the shortlist and it was their choice.”

So far AKKODIS ASP has found hard going in the FIA WEC, getting up to speed with new drivers and a new manufacturer following a lengthy association with Mercedes-AMG. And with new drivers in the fold, Robin has the added challenge of helping his new teammates get acclimated in the highly competitive LMGT3 class, with no prior testing or experience working together as a unit.

“Last time at Imola was tricky,” Robin noted. “My stint was good and we were in P5, then we got a penalty for track limits and changed to wets later in the race when it rained, we lost so much time to that.

“I don’t know what to think about this one. Our expectations this weekend are similar to Imola. On lap time it will be difficult, but we know that if we don’t make errors, don’t suffer penalties and don’t hit anyone we could get a strong result. Maybe P5 to P10. But in qualifying I don’t expect too much.

“I do feel that the Lexus should be better suited to Spa than Imola too, as there are more high-speed corners.”

Tire tactics key for Toyota’s 1-2 sweep in WEC 6 Hours of Spa

Toyota Gazoo Racing scored a head-turning 1-2 in the third race of the FIA World Endurance Championship season at Spa after a frenetic six hours of racing, which was packed with significant incidents in tricky conditions.

Winning the race — easily the most entertaining of the season so far — held in front of packed grandstands was the No. 7 Toyota GR010 HYBRID of Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Conway and Jose Maria Lopez, which had a near-perfect run.

The win for the pole-sitting No. 7 crew was ultimately set up by a decision made before the race. The team gambled on tires, opting for slicks on a drying track while many runners in the field chose to start on wets.

After Conway slipped back to seventh on the opening lap, an early safety car and no further rain showers meant many cars — including both Ferrari AF Corse 499Ps — took early control but subsequently lost tons of time. They all struggled for grip and had to make a costly extra stop for slicks which split the field and dropped multiple cars off the lead lap.

From there, the No. 7 controlled the race and, despite being challenged late on in the race by the sister No. 8 which started dead last and briefly led in the final hour, crossed the line 16s clear of the pack.

“It was a crazy race with safety cars that kept eradicating our leads. But all my teammates did solid stints. It’s a great team result,” Conway said.

The No. 8’s runner-up place was a hugely impressive result for Brendon Hartley, Ryo Hirakawa and Sebastien Buemi in response to Hartley’s off at Raidillon on cold tires in qualifying.

“It is an amazing result for the whole team and a big recovery job from our car,” Hartley said after the race. “Sebastien made an amazing start in tricky conditions and got through the field cleanly after the team made the right call on tires. That was a big decision, but it was the right one.

“Car No. 7 deserved the victory because they had a little more pace than us today, particularly in the middle part of the race. We went in a different direction on set-up; I couldn’t challenge Kamui in the final stint. We were one set of tires down after what happened in qualifying so we can be very happy to finish second and take these points.”

Third was the No. 51 AF Corse Ferrari 499P, earning a last-gasp podium after James Calado made a move on Fred Makowiecki around the outside at Les Combes on the final lap to deny Porsche a second podium finish in a row.

The top-three finish was a consolation prize for AF Corse. The car had the pace to win here, but the team’s tire gamble failed and No. 50 crashed out late in the race from third position. Antonio Fuoco lost control of the car on the run down the hill to Eau Rouge on cold tires and clouted the guardrail.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1416]

The Italian was a passenger in the incident, which saw the car retire on the spot. It was another shunt that put the organiser’s decision to ban tire warmers for this season in the spotlight. Fuoco’s off in the race, Hartley’s off in qualifying and multiple offs for drivers on the formation lap provided evidence that even the best drivers on the grid are getting caught out in cold conditions with stone cold rubber. After the race, the paddock was rife with conversations about this rule change, which at its core has become a safety issue.

For Porsche Penske Motorsport’s No. 5 963, fourth was a fair result considering the ultimate pace of the Ferraris throughout, though the team will leave disappointed that it couldn’t hang on for a podium. More concerning, though, was an apparent electronics failure for the No. 6 — retiring at the Bus Stop after what Laurens Vanthoor described as a “total blackout.” The mechanical issue was one of many for the team this week and is leading to much head-scratching ahead of Le Mans.

Completing the top five in Hypercar was the No. 2 Cadillac Racing V-Series.R which, like the two Ferraris, also started on wets and spent the first half of the race trying to fight its way back into contention.

Cadillac is another brand leaving Spa wondering what could have been. It split the strategy of its V-Series.Rs at the start, which saw the No. 3 guest-entered, IMSA-crewed car start on slicks and emerge as a podium contender in the opening laps.

A violent impact for Renger van der Zande in the second hour at Eau Rouge saw the car retire from heavy damage. The Dutchman, who was running second at the time, was sent flying sideways into the tires, after what Sebastien Bourdais revealed was an electronic power steering failure.

Thankfully van der Zande was fine and was able to bow to the relieved crowd at the Raidillon grandstand before leaving the wreckage.

A shred of good news — RACER believes the tub isn’t damaged from the impact. Sourcing a replacement would have been an extremely tough ask with parts in short supply and Le Mans just around the corner.

Outside the top five was the HERTZ Team JOTA Porsche, having had a very encouraging maiden outing. The team finished one lap off the lead, stayed out of trouble and ran ahead of the factory Porsches for significant periods despite the crew’s conservative approach to the race — a highly encouraging start for the first Hypercar in customer hands. Mission accomplished for this young effort.

Fast as Team WRT was on track, it was their crew’s pit performance that gave them the winning edge. Motorsport Images

LMP2 was effectively a series of sprints set up by the four safety car periods, featuring dramatic battles and intrigue from a handful of cars that opted for varying strategies that kept everyone guessing until the final minutes.

Eventually winning the class was the No. 41 Team WRT ORECA of Rui Andrade, Robert Kubica and Louis Deletraz, which beat the pole-sitting No. 23 United Autosports ORECA in a battle on pit lane when both cars came in for a late splash while dicing for the lead.

United, and specifically Tom Blomqvist, will be frustrated by the second-place finish. The Briton was mercurial on the drying track at the start of the race and put the team in a comfortable position out front. For periods he was so fast he found himself amongst the leading Hypercar pack.

Unfortunately, the safety cars nullified the lead and dropped the No. 23 down the order, forcing the team to spend a lengthy portion of the race battling back to the front, only to miss out by 6s following the duel between its pit crew and WRT’s at the end.

“When you’re fighting and in the lead, it’s easy to be disappointed coming so close,” Blomqvist’s teammate Oliver Jarvis said. “But with the way the race went, P2 is an excellent result. We were unlucky to lose our 45s lead due to a safety car, but the team made a fantastic pit-stop call later in the race to jump back up the order. So we leave with good points.

“Our Portimão win and second place here is building nicely towards Le Mans. Credit to the team, they did a fantastic job.”

The No. 23’s misfortune should take nothing away from the No. 41’s result, though. This was a much better outing for WRT in every aspect in front of its home fans.

“After the first safety car we thought we were out of the race because we were so far back, more than a minute behind the leaders,” admitted Andrade, who took the start in the car on slicks. “I bottled the start, dropping to P8 before fighting back to P3, it was not the easiest set of conditions.

“So seeing the second safety car come out and bringing us back into the fight was amazing. Robert and Louis then did a great job to get us back.”

Inter Europol finished third after a lengthy battle in the final minutes between Albert Costa and Andrea Caldarelli in the No. 9 Prema Racing ORECA. Costa helped the Polish team score its first podium in the WEC with a bold move on Caldarelli at Les Combes with five minutes to go.

It capped off a cunning race-long strategy which saw the team save fuel and a fresh set of tires for the end. The team seemingly came out of nowhere after looking down and out early in the race when it was forced to pit under green flag conditions while its competition hit pit lane under full course yellow. Fabio Scherer again showed pace, all the more impressive when its strategy became clearer late in the race.

Behind the No. 9 Prema Racing ORECA was the No. 22 United Autosports ORECA which did well to recover from Phil Hanson’s spin into the barriers on the formation lap, costing the car speed early on and forcing the team to change its nose.

Prema’s sister car, meanwhile, was in contention throughout and led in the fifth hour during Mirko Bortolotti’s stint. A crushing three-minute stop-go penalty, handed to the team after it completed a routine stop under a safety car period when the pit lane was closed, cost the car two laps and dropped it to 10th.

Avoiding the errors of their rivals, the Richard Mille AF Corse Ferrari 488 GTE EVO conquered LMGTE Am. Motorsport Images

GTE Am was similar to LMP2, with countless battles and multiple cars building a lead and then losing it through either misfortune or errors.

Richard Mille AF Corse would emerge as the winning team. The No. 83 crew of Alessio Rovera, Lilou Wadoux and Luis Perez Companc didn’t put a foot wrong and quietly moved to the front as the race wore on.

With the victory, 19-year-old Wadoux notably becomes the first female driver to take an FIA WEC class win.

“It’s something I am really proud of,” reflected Wadoux, who received a round of applause from the drivers and media in the post-race press conference. “This is also really important for the points in the championship.”

Ultimately the No. 83 crew took control as the other contending cars struggled to find a rhythm, including the championship-leading No. 33 Corvette Racing C8.R which powered to the front during Ben Keating’s stint at the start before conditions improved and the Texan had to box for slicks, dropping the team out of the top five.

The ORT by TF Sport Aston Martin, which started from pole, and the D’Station Racing Vantage also lost time due to errors. The ORT Vantage received a penalty for crossing the white line at the pit exit. D’Station meanwhile had its race, which started so well, ruined by a penalty for a dangerous moment from Tomonobu Fujii. The Japanese driver, who led in the opening hour, banged wheels with the Iron Dames Porsche and ran Sarah Bovy off the road on the exit of La Source on the run down the hill.

In the end, a mistake-free run from the winning trio made the difference and Rovera found himself in the No. 83 tasked simply with managing a lead of around 30s in his stint, which he did with relative ease.

Nicky Catsburg in the recovering Corvette was unable to chase down Rovera in the final stint but claimed an impressive second place for Corvette Racing after a titanic tussle with Charlie Eastwood in the ORT by TF Aston. The fight between Catsburg and Eastwood was thrilling and went all the way to the line, with Catsburg putting on another defensive master class to hold station.

Just off the podium, the No. 88 Proton Competition Porsche snatched fourth from the Iron Dames example at the very end of the race, when Harry Tincknell fought his way past Michelle Gatting amid the other battles podium places in the three classes with time-expiring.

Next up for the FIA WEC teams is the centenary edition of the Le Mans 24 Hours, set to be held on June 10th and 11th.

Ferrari AF Corse’s pair of 499Ps topped the times in the second practice session of the FIA World Endurance Championship meeting at Spa this afternoon, the No. 51 finishing up 1.2 seconds quicker than the No. 50 sister car after a 2m01.871s from Antonio Giovinazzi. The Italian’s tour of the circuit was the fastest time of the weekend so far, and almost a second quicker than last year’s pole time.

Third in the times during what turned out to be an incident-filled session, disrupted by two red flags and three full-course yellows, was the No. 2 Cadillac Racing V-Series.R, which set a best time of 2m03.338s. The quickest of the Toyotas was the FP1-topping No. 8, which slotted in fourth with a 2m04.380s.

It was a messy 90 minutes for more than one of the Hypercar teams. Porsche Penske Motorsport’s pair of 963s managed a combined seven laps after issues early in the running. The No. 5 stopped on the Kemmel Straight at the hands of Dane Cameron with a driveshaft issue, while the No. 6 had a hybrid system failure at La Source which required a reset. Neither car would go on to set more laps after their respective issues.

Porsche has told RACER that the No. 5’s issue, which was a broken connection to the wheel at the driveshaft’s mounting point, has been repaired. The team is currently working on the No. 6 and investigating the root cause of its issue.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1416]

Cadillac Racing’s brand-new No. 3 V-Series.R, which was finished being built up just before Free Practice 1, also lost most of the session to an issue. Renger van der Zande was forced to stop the car due to a small fire after just two laps.

A statement from the team after the session revealed that the fire (put out by Renger) was caused by a “self-induced” mistake which the team was not comfortable explaining in further detail. “We are going to have some extra work to do tonight,” the team added.

The most significant incident came with 14 minutes remaining in the session, when the No. 21 and No. 54 GTE Am class Ferrari 488s had a huge off at Raidillon. The cars, driven by Diego Alessi and Thomas Flohr respectively, were damaged severely after contact with the barriers on driver’s right after Flohr reported he was rear-ended by the No. 21.

Both drivers exited their cars without outside assistance, although there was no information immediately available on their condition. The No. 21 sustained heavy right-side and rear-end damage, while the No. 54 sustained front-end damage.

In LMP2, Team WRT’s No. 31 ORECA set the pace with a 2m06.108s from Robin Frijns, who was quicker than the six of the 13 Hypercar class cars. United Autosport’s No. 22 and the No. 41 sister WRT ORECA completed the top three with times four and five-tenths off the Dutchman.

The No. 54 AF Corse Ferrari, which was damaged in the Raidillon incident, led GTE Am with a 2m15.736s from Davide Rigon. The No. 57 Kessel Ferrari and GR Racing Porsche finished the day second and third.

UP NEXT: Free Practice 3 is set to get underway at 11:00am local time Friday.

Le Mans Endurance Management [LMEM] has signed a contract extension with the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, which will ensure the legendary Belgian circuit remains as a round of the FIA World Endurance Championship and European Le Mans Series for a further five years.

The announcement was made during an official opening of the new Endurance Grandstand at the circuit this afternoon, ahead of the FIA WEC 6 Hours of Spa this Saturday.

“Stability across our championships is extremely important and to continue our relationship with Spa-Francorchamps is a great honor,” said Frederic Lequien, CEO of LMEM. “The circuit has been a regular fixture in both the WEC and ELMS calendars for many years and provides teams and fans with excellent racing and world-class facilities. There is no denying that it is one of the drivers’ favorite venues, and the track is truly unique which always provides thrilling action. We have witnessed some incredible races in WEC and ELMS over the years and thanks to the team at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, we can now look forward to many more to follow.”

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1416]

Spa has been a part of the FIA WEC’s calendar since the championship’s inaugural season in 2012, and the ELMS since 2016.

“I am delighted to extend the contract with LMEM which confirms the anchoring of the WEC and the ELMS in the circuit’s calendar,” added Amaury Bertholome, CEO of Le Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. “The 6 Hours of Spa Francorchamps are, without a doubt, part of the important FIA world championship, now expanding with the addition of new constructors and an undeniable rebound in popularity.

“The special attention that LMEM brings to the quality of this championship and to the reception of its fans forms part of the reinforcement of the circuit’s status as an economic, sporting and tourism lung for the region. Finally, the constant desire of LMEM for innovation in motorsports and especially via its MissionH24 and its electric-hydrogen prototypes, with which the circuit has been associated from the beginning, is also of course a major actor in our sector for more sustainable major sporting event.”

Toyota Gazoo Racing’s No. 8 GR010 HYBRID set the benchmark time in the first practice session of the 6 Hours of Spa weekend. Sebastien Buemi topped the times with a 2m02.982s, a time just a fraction slower than last year’s pole lap from Glickenhaus, a 2m02.771s.

Buemi’s flyer was 1.6 seconds faster than the other FIA WEC Hypercar class runners. The No. 50 Ferrari came closest, after a 2m04.632s from Antonio Fuoco, who was a tenth up on Jose Maria Lopez in the No. 7 Toyota that completed the top three.

The fastest of the LMDh cars in the class was the No. 6 Porsche Penske 963, following a 2m04.870s from Laurens Vanthoor. The Belgian would end the red flag-interrupted session fifth, below the No. 51 Ferrari that finished up fourth on the timing screens.

The No. 2 Cadillac Racing V-Series.R was sixth, while the brand-new No. 3 example, making a guest appearance this weekend, would set the ninth-fastest time, behind the quickest of the two Peugeot 9X8s — the No. 4.

The other new Hypercar in the field, the No. 38 Porsche 963 from Hertz Team JOTA, was 22nd overall in the times and completed 18 laps, the team using the session as an extended shakedown of its new car. The best time was six seconds off the pace set by Toyota, but this is very much early days and outright speed is not yet a priority.

In LMP2, the No. 22 United Autosports ORECA of Filipe Albuquerque ran just 0.043s faster than the No. 28 JOTA 07 Gibson to top the class with a 2m07.471s. The No. 23 United Autosports ORECA completed the top three.

It was a 1-2 for Ferrari 488 teams in GTE Am, with Kessel Racing’s No. 57 managing a 2m16.177s courtesy of Daniel Serra. The No. 21 AF Corse Ferrari from Ulysse De Pauw ended up second while the ORT by TF Aston Martin slotted in third with a 2m17.168s from Charlie Eastwood.

A pair of red flags interrupted the session, costing the teams almost 10 minutes of running. The first was for an incident at Les Combes for the No. 83 AF Corse Ferrari, the second for contact between the D’Station Aston Martin and the Vanwall.

UP NEXT: Track action continues this afternoon with Free Practice 2 at 4:20 local time.

“Chip Ganassi Racing is excited to have Jack join Sebastien and Renger in sharing driver duties for the No. 3 Cadillac V-Series.R at the Spa WEC race next week,” said Mike O’Gara, director of operations for Chip Ganassi Racing that runs the Cadillac Racing entry.

“This is just another example of the ‘One Team’ concept that Cadillac Racing is all about. We value Jack’s feedback in the car, and hope this strengthens the preparation for Cadillac Racing’s assault on the 24 Hours of Le Mans this June.”

In addition to this outing at Spa, Aitken is confirmed for Le Mans, where he will race alongside Pipo Derani and Alexander Sims in the No. 311 Action Express Cadillac V-Series.R for the team’s debut in the race.

At Le Mans Cadillac will be represented by three Hypercar-class cars, with Action Express making the trip to La Sarthe to join Cadillac Racing’s two-car effort. AXR had applied for an entry to the WEC round at Spa, but its request was denied by the championship organizers due to a lack of available garage spaces at the circuit for the meeting.

“Driving at such an incredible circuit with the Cadillac V.Series R will be an invaluable addition to our prep for Le Mans,” Aiken added. “It will be a pleasure to integrate with Chip Ganassi and work together to push the Cadillac program forward, as we have a great deal of respect between us. Partnering up with Seb and Renger will be great for me personally, as I’ll be learning from two great guys.”

A 38-car entry list for Round 3 of the FIA WEC season at Spa-Francorchamps on the last weekend of April has been revealed. It includes a boosted Hypercar grid of 13 cars for the six-hour Le Mans “dress rehearsal.”

The top class field will increase by two from the 11 that raced at Sebring and are set to compete in Round 2 at Portimao on April 16. The new entries come from Cadillac Racing and Hertz Team JOTA, which will bring an additional V-Series.R and Porsche 963 to the hotly contested category.

For Cadillac, entering its gold-liveried V-Series.R that competes in IMSA full-time serves as part of the preparations for the car’s Le Mans debut in June. At La Sarthe both Ganassi-run Cadillacs will take the start, joined by the Sebring 12 Hours-winning Action Express example, which also runs full-time in IMSA and will make a three-pronged effort for the GM brand.

The 6 Hours of Spa will be the second time that both Cadillac Racing V-Series.Rs have competed together, as both cars took part at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in the car’s global race debut.

“We are looking forward to the first WEC race where both of our Cadillac Hypercars will be participating,” said Mike O’Gara, director of operations for Chip Ganassi Racing. “Cadillac and Chip Ganassi Racing believe that we are stronger when we race multiple cars on any given race weekend. The Spa event will serve as a much-needed dress rehearsal for the Le Mans 24-hour race. It will be a great opportunity for our ‘IMSA regulars’ to be immersed in the WEC rules and race procedures in anticipation of the big event in June.”

Driving the No. 3 Cadillac will be full-season IMSA pair Sebastien Bourdais and Renger van der Zande.

Hertz Team JOTA’s No. 38 963, meanwhile, was previously announced to be making its debut at Spa back at the British outfit’s car reveal in London. Antonio Felix da Costa, Will Stevens and Yifei Ye are due to compete as a trio from Round 3 onwards in the team’s new car.

As expected, the addition of JOTA’s Hypercar entry to the WEC grid means its LMP2 effort has been reduced to a single car — the No. 28 of David Heinemeier Hansson, Pietro Fittipaldi and Oliver Rasmussen. However, JOTA will compete in Portimao with its two LMP2 ORECAs prior to the race at Spa, with da Costa competing on home soil in the seat filled by Stevens at Sebring, where the No. 48 took a dramatic class win.

The only other change in the Hypercar class is at Glickenhaus, where Romain Dumas and Olivier Pla are listed as a pair in the No. 708 007, with the third driver a TBA. At Sebring Ryan Briscoe was part of the team’s lineup.

Elsewhere on the 38-car entry, in GTE Am there is only one notable change. In the No. 21 AF Corse Ferrari, Diego Alessi will drive in the seat filled by Stefano Constantini at Sebring. He will race alongside Simon Mann and Ulysse de Pauw.

The FIA WEC 6 Hours of Spa is set to get underway on April 29.
