Packer on the ‘most transitive time in the history of college sports’

When news broke Thursday that Southern Cal and UCLA are leaving the Pac-12 to join the Big Ten in 2024, it sent shockwaves through the college sports landscape.

Mark Packer and Wes Durham had plenty to talk about on the final edition of the Packer and Durham show on ACC Network on Friday, and Packer gave his thoughts on the latest wave of conference realignment, which follows the eventual move of Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC.

“We’re sitting on the front row of the most transitive time in the history of college sports, and there’s no doubt,” Packer said. “100 years from now, whatever college sports looks like, assuming it’s even in existence anymore, they will look back at this run — between COVID, name, image and likeness, this move in terms of Oklahoma, Texas, USC — and all of this will be in history as far as what happened with college sports.”

Packer also spoke about what this all means for the ACC and talked about the “temptations” that current members of the league now face amid the latest wave of realignment.

“As far as the ACC goes, it’s a really, really important time,” he said. “It’s going to be fascinating to see how this plays out. The conference as a whole has got to be buttoned up, and if there’s some people that are thinking about it… I’m telling you, there’s going to be all kinds of temptations here left and right.”

The ball is now in the court of Notre Dame, which has long been an independent, and reports indicate that the Big Ten is waiting on a decision from the Irish.

Packer says the Irish will have to make a decision one way or another, sooner or later.

“So, I’m kind of curious to see how the league moves forward, and I’m really interested to see Notre Dame,” he said. “Notre Dame is sitting there going, OK, now what? I’m just telling ya, at some point in time, you’re going to have to make a decision if you’re the Irish — whether it be tomorrow, whether it be five years down the road. You can bark about independence all you want, but we’re just going in a different universe, man. Independence is going to be like a foreign language, in my opinion.”

A Clemson defensive back target in the 2023 class committed elsewhere on Monday evening.

As expected, Coppell (Texas) High School four-star Braxton Myers announced his commitment to Southern Cal, which was considered the favorite to land his verbal pledge.

Myers (6-1, 185) chose the Trojans over his other finalists — Clemson, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU and Ole Miss.

Myers is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 8 safety and No. 126 overall prospect in the 2023 class, while Rivals considers him the No. 21 cornerback and No. 137 overall prospect in his class. ESPN, meanwhile, tabs him as the No. 13 corner and No. 116 overall prospect for 2023.

Clemson extended an offer to Myers in January, and he traveled to campus as an unofficial visitor for the program’s elite junior day at the end of that month.

As a junior last season, Myers recorded 40 tackles, five tackles for loss, one forced fumble, 11 pass breakups and three interceptions.

USC lands prized quarterback Caleb Williams

Huge get for a huge rival

Notre Dame plays at USC to close the 2022 regular season and today Lincoln Riley officially found his quarterback at USC both for the future and for the present.

Caleb Williams, a five-star recruit who began starting for Oklahoma midway through the 2021 football season entered the transfer portal shortly after the year.  Early speculation was that he’d wind back up with his former coach at USC and that’s exactly what Williams announced on Tuesday.

Williams completed over 64% of his passes in 2021 while throwing for 1,912 yards, and 21 touchdowns to just four interceptions.  He added an additional 442 rushing yards and six rushing scores on the year.

The writing was on the wall as USC lost a pair of quarterbacks to the transfer portal this off-season so this is hardly a surprise but is certainly newsworthy for being completed.

Buckle up Notre Dame and USC fans, the rivalry between the two is about to get as heated as it was in the seventies.

Former Oklahoma quarterback Caleb Williams announced via social media Tuesday that he is transferring to Southern Cal, where he will reunite with former Sooners head coach and first-year Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley.

Williams announced back on Jan. 3 that he was entering the transfer portal.

Call in Russian as fox makes run for it during USC-Arizona State

USC and Arizona State were interrupted by an unwelcome intruder

The USC game at Arizona State on Saturday needed a bit of a lift and it came in the form of a fox.

Yep, in the first quarter of the Pac-12 contest at Sun Devil Stadium an unwelcome visitor made an appearance on the field.

Not only did the fox make a run on the turf, it scared the wits out of plenty of people in the stands when it climbed the wall and took off up the steps.

Notre Dame depth chart for USC

What would you change?

Notre Dame and USC return to action this week as they meet for the first time since 2019 after the pandemic kept last year’s rivalry game away from college football fans.

Both teams enter this week’s contest off a bye week and at different places.  Notre Dame sits at 5-1 as the Irish enter the second half of the season and look to make it a fifth-straight season of ten or more victories while USC is playing out the round while they look for a new head coach and sit at just 3-3.

What will Notre Dame do differently with their roster coming off the bye?

Here is how the depth chart officially looked on Monday of USC week:

Elliott’s name already being mentioned for head coaching job again

We’re only in Week 3 of the 2021 college football season, and Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott’s name is already being mentioned for a head coaching vacancy.

Yahoo Sports national reporter Pete Thamel threw out Elliott’s name as a potential candidate to replace Clay Helton, who was fired by Southern Cal on Monday following the Trojans’ loss to Stanford on Saturday.

Of course, Elliott has been mentioned for several jobs over the past few years, and though many have considered him a top coordinator to take a head coaching job, he has declined any overtures he has received to date.

Here we are again just three weeks into the season and Elliott’s name is already being thrown out there once again.

Six USC Trojans are in the field for the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, which is the most of any school.

A whopping seven USC players received an invitation to compete in the second edition of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. With Gabriela Ruffels turning professional, however, six will compete this week, the most from any school in the country. Golfweek caught up with head coach Justin Silverstein to get the run-down on each Trojan in the field.

The ANWA begins March 31 at Champions Retreat. After 36 holes, the top 30 will advance to the final round at Augusta National on Saturday, April 3. Both Allisen Corpuz and Alyaa Abdulghany competed in the ANWA in 2019. Corpuz tied for 17th and Abdulghany missed the cut.

Longtime coach Dick Coury dies at 91

Dick Coury, a legend in coaching, has died at the age of 91.

Dick Coury, one of the great high school coaches of all-time who went on to spend time on the college and pro level, died Saturday at the age of 91.

Coury’s teams at Southern California powerhouse Mater Dei won 85 games while losing nine and tying five from 1957-65.

Per the Orange County Register:

Coury went on to serve as defensive coordinator for USC and became Cal State Fullerton’s first football coach in 1970.

He was part of the Trojans’ coaching staff for their 1967 national championship. In his two seasons at Cal State Fullerton, he compiled a 13-8-1 record.

Coury was the head coach of the World Football League’s Portland Storm in 1974-75. Coury later coached the Breakers, Portland’s United States Football League franchise, in 1985.

Coury was an NFL assistant coach for nine different teams over a 30-year period. Coury was defensive coordinator at USC when the Trojans won the 1967 national title. Coury also served as an assistant coach on the Philadelphia Eagles’ 1981 Super Bowl team.

Coury told Oregonlive.com how difficult times were in the WFL.

“You want to talk about a real struggle,” Coury told The Oregonian in 2012. “The league couldn’t even pay the players. They just stopped paying the guys after a while. The fans in Portland were so good they brought sandwiches to the games for the players, or they’d stop at practices and bring picnic lunches. “They knew we were struggling, and were trying to make life pleasant. I’ll never forget that.”
