Sophie Cunningham calls out WNBA refs over officiating following late-game ejection against the Lynx

“We get fined for a lot of stuff, but I think they need to be held accountable, too.

Sophie Cunningham was ejected during a Minnesota Lynx-Phoenix Mercury matchup, and the sequence following it is totally wild.

On Wednesday, the Mercury were down considerably to the the Lynx as time ticked off the clock during the fourth quarter. Sophie was tussling with Minnesota guard Courtney Williams on a possession and seemingly did not like that a foul wasn’t called on Williams. So, she chirped at a nearby ref and immediately received a technical foul.

Moments later, Sophie was driving to the basket when she scored a tough bucket on Napheesa Collier. She screamed, “And one!” after a foul was called. Still, there were some extracurricular words exchanged with Phee — leading to another technical foul — and Sophie was promptly ejected.

Following her double techs, Sophie laughed at the turn of events, pumped up the home crowd and seemingly said, “[Expletive] yeah” twice before leaving the court.

Postgame, she was asked about her first-ever WNBA ejection. This is what she shared with the media when asked about the moment:

“There’s just so much we can’t control as players, and maybe I could have controlled my emotions a bit more. But, honestly, I didn’t want to. I think sometimes a team needs that…”

“I think it’s a good question for the player’s association to maybe see [about] the ref situation and how we can be better moving forward as a group. We get fined for a lot of stuff, but I think they need to be held accountable, too.”

Sophie Cunningham’s 8 best pregame outfits from the 2024 WNBA season, including a cheeky Love Island-inspired look

Sophie Cunningham has rarely missed an opportunity to show off a fit.

Sophie Cunningham was determined to show off her latest tunnel fit ahead of Monday’s matchup with the New York Liberty — tan lines and all.

If you know anything about WNBA pregame tunnel outfits, it’s a huge deal with the league. Everything from skirts to boots to sparkly pants and wild purses are displayed before a game, and if players don’t use the opportunity, they’ll get outshined by some of the league’s best dressers like Cameron Brink or Angel Reese.

So, it’s not surprising that Cunningham was fully prepared to show off a glammed-up look during a recent matchup and walked through a pre-game Mercury photo shoot rocking a barely-there dress that showed off some serious skin and undeniable tan lines.

Sophie’s seemingly Love Island-inspired fit got us thinking that perhaps we missed more looks from her this season.

So, here’s seven more of Sophie Cunningham’s best pregame getups:

Sophie Cunningham had a very relatable NSFW reaction to missing shots during WNBA All-Star skills challenge

Listen, Sophie. We totally understand.

Sophie Cunningham cursed very loudly during Friday’s WNBA All-Star skills challenge, and the moment was so funny.

Listen, I’m not going to pretend to know what kind of pressure the players participating were under. With $55,000 on the line, I’m sure that it probably felt immense. (Allisha Gray probably has nerves of steel.) So, I’m not going to judge Sophie for having what was probably an “in-the-mind” thought out loud.

She was certainly trying her hardest to overcome all the obstacles when a nearby hot mic caught her somewhat panicking — chiding herself, really —about several shots that just would not go down. One missed shot produced a hilariously relatable “Oh, well, [expletive]” from Sophie, and broadcaster Ryan Ruocco quickly tried to explain what was happening. (Warning: NSFW language.)
