The first substantial Sons of the Forest patch is here, bringing with it a slew of balance changes and fixes, along with some new features too. The patch is live now on Steam, and once you update the game, you’ll get binoculars, a new defensive gate, a hang glider, and a Kelvin who won’t chop down trees if you build something in them anymore. Kelvin won’t break radios when he drops them anymore either, which is a nice change.
Expect some extra resistance when you run through the food bunker from now on, as developer Endnight added a new mini-boss to the survival game. You may want to think twice before taking a shotgun into battle, though. They deal half their usual damage now.
Other balance changes include getting less hydration and energy from energy drinks, muddy cannibals who are more docile than normal, and the possibility of getting mugged and eaten in your sleep. Nearby enemies who can reach you when you start honk-shoo mimimi-ing may take advantage of the opportunity.
There’s a long list of additional fixes and tweaks on Steam, ranging from moose moving more naturally to audio improvements and better impact collisions. One thing worth noting for speedrunners is that you can’t open locked doors with sticks anymore. You can, however, lock a door with a stick, by propping the stick against it.
Sons of the Forest is in early access on Steam now, after breaking the site when it launched at the end of February. Endnight has no full release date in mind just yet.
