Sonic the Hedgehog 2 outruns box office competition, earning $71 million opening weekend

Speed, and the numbers, are his game.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had the biggest opening weekend for a video game adaptation ever, outpacing the competition to a cool $71 million.

A report by Variety states that Sonic’s latest cinematic adventure even overtook the original film’s $58 million 3-day opening record domestically, meaning Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had the best opening weekend for a video game film. Internationally, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 earned $37 million, bringing the global total to $141 million. It turns out people love that cheesy 1990s nostalgia!

Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s success isn’t that surprising, given how much hype there was before its premiere. Many people thought of the original film as the best video game adaptation, though that attitude may change after this weekend.

Even before Sonic the Hedgehog 2 hit theaters, Paramount has been preparing for a Sonic cinematic universe of sorts. A third movie is in the works already, as is a spinoff series starring Knuckles the Echidna that’ll be on Paramount’s streaming service sometime next year.

It seems that thus far, Sonic is the reigning box office champ when it comes to film adaptations. That could change once his long-time rival Mario enters the arena, though.

Ben Schwartz and James Marsden on ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ and classic Nintendo game Contra

Do you remember the cheat code to the legendary Nintendo game?

Ben Schwartz and James Marsden are back for more in their new movie “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” (you can watch the trailer here) which comes out this weekend and also stars the legendary Jim Carrey.

This week I was able to sit down with Schwartz (who plays the voice of Sonic) and Marsden and talk to them about important things like if Schwartz ever thought as a kid while playing Sonic the Hedgehog on Sega if he’d ever get to play the most famous hedgehog in a movie some day.

I was also able to have a very serious conversation about the legendary Nintendo game Contra. Do you remember the cheat code for that game that got you 30 guys? Did the makers of the game realize they made a mistake by initially only giving you three guys to win the game? So many questions about this important topic!

You can watch that discussion here:

Oh, and here’s someone winning Contra with just one life!

Incredible!

You can watch our entire conversation here.

Fun guys. Fun movie. Fun times.

Xbox’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 controllers are hairy and unsettling

Imagine getting chip dust all over these.

Xbox is giving away a custom Sonic the Hedgehog 2 console and fuzzy controllers.

Yes, you read that right. To celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s theatrical release on April 8, 2022, Microsoft created this themed Xbox Series S, which features Sonic and Knuckles clashing below one of the franchises’ iconic gold rings. Enough about the console, though — it’s the hairy controllers catching everyone’s eye. One is ocean-blue like Sonic, while the other is bright red reminiscent of Knuckles. Deeply unsettling, especially once you read the description.

“With textured coatings reminiscent of the “bristly” texture of hedgehogs in the wild, the new Xbox Wireless Controllers come in Sonic Blue and Knuckles Red,” Marcos Waltenberg, Xbox’s global partnerships director, said in a press release.

Gaze upon these works below and despair over how bad these controllers would smell with soda and chip dust stuck betwixt the stands

If that mental image is (somehow) appealing, you can win the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Xbox console by following Xbox on Twitter and retweeting the promotion below. US residents can also enter by redeeming Microsoft Rewards points. More details here.

Circling back around here, imagine the texture of dried ketchup and other unspeakable sauces scraping across your palms while playing Halo Infinite or Elden Ring. Ok, I’ll stop.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 gets one last trailer before release

There’s less than a month left until the movie is out!

There’s less than a month left until Sonic the Hedgehog 2 comes out, and its final trailer is sending fan excitement into overdrive.

We get a few more details about the film this go-around, light spoilers ahead for those who haven’t seen Sonic the Hedgehog yet (fix that, it’s the best video game movie ever).

It seems that Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) found his way back to earth with a Chaos Emerald, bringing with him the fearsome warrior Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba). Sonic has to team up with his long-time buddy Tails to take the villainous duo down. Straight forward stuff, but it’s a film for kids, so who cares!

Check out Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s final trailer for yourself below.

There’s also a beautiful new poster that mimic’s a certain classic Sega Genesis game.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is coming out in North America on April 8, 2022, so there’s not much time left until we find out if Elba made Knuckles sexy.

Paramount is turning Sonic into a cinematic universe of sorts, as Knuckles is getting a spinoff series next year on the company’s new streaming service. The Halo TV series is another big video game adaptation coming to Paramount+ rather soon too.

These new Sonic The Hedgehog 2 movie posters are wonderfully cheesy

The prickly speedster returns.

Well ahead of Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s theatrical release in April, Paramount teased fans with three new character posters.

Sonic the Hedgehog is often seen as the best video game film adaptation ever, so hype over the second movie is already at a fever pitch. It’s not coming out until April 8, 2022, but Paramount probably wants everyone ready to bolt toward theaters on premiere day. Though a specific subset of the fandom clearly has been ready since the announcement that Idris Elba will voice Knuckles the Echidna.

On Tuesday, the official Sonic the Hedgehog movie Twitter account shared character posters, each with an accompanying corny tagline. The titular hero Sonic got “License 2 Quill,” while everyone’s favorite sidekick Trails had “Ready 2 Kick Tail,” and (best of all) Knuckles sported “Time 2 Punch In.” Check them out for yourself below.

That wonderful sense of humor from the first film seems to be back in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. A legacy that the Knuckles the Echidna TV show hopefully continues next year.

Time will tell if Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie ends up as another fan favorite like the first, but thus far, it’s looking promising. Paramount is all-in on more video game adaptations, with the Halo TV series already getting a second season renewal.

Here’s our first look at Idris Elba as Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2

You mean these Chaos Emeralds?

Everyone’s favorite blue hedgehog is back in this new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which dropped during Thursday evening’s The Game Awards 2021.

Featuring heavily in this first proper look at the sequel to the beloved 2020 film Sonic the Hedgehog — which yes, still feels weird to say — is the movie’s all-star cast. James Marsden, Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey all will reprise their original roles from the first film, while fans got their first look at Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna alongside the return of Colleen O’Shaughnessey to her iconic role as Tails.

And if the trailer is anything to go by, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 promises more fun, chaos and Carrey chewing even more scenery than he did in the first film as Doctor Eggman.

Though Sonic’s original design was criticized heavily by fans, Paramount Pictures delayed the original 2020 film and went back to the drawing board to get it right. Since, Sonic the Hedgehog has been praised by fans and critics alike. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will make its way to theaters on April 8, 2022.
