MMA’s week out of the cage: Henry Cejudo travels in style, Holly Holm’s new puppy

Check out the best social media posts from fighters and their lives outside of the cage in the past week.

Social media has become a significant part of the sporting landscape. But few, if any, professional sports match the level of interaction and personal access provided by MMA.

In an individual competition in which nearly every athlete is chasing the same goal of financial success and championship glory, it’s important for fighters to provide insight into their lives in order to connect with fans and gain followings.

Although the life of a fighter often can be mundane and repetitive, there still are moments of interest that take place outside the cage, ring or training room. Here are some of the most interesting of those occurrences from the past week.

I watched “Game Changers” on Netflix. Then I tried to became vegan…then vegetarian. In less than 3 days I was like this!!! I tried…and this is my second time trying to cut off meat out of my diet…I just couldn’t do it, I love meat!!! Maybe one day I will do it…one day I will be eating like an ape and not like a lion…I guess for now I will keep up with the lion’s diet. 🍖

NASCAR world honors ‘class act & true champion’ Jimmie Johnson following retirement news

The seven-time NASCAR champion will retire from full-time racing at the end of the 2020 season.

Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson will retire from full-time racing at the end of the 2020 season.

In a video posted to social media Wednesday, the No. 48 Chevrolet driver said he’s “so thankful for 18 incredible years” at NASCAR’s highest level, and he’s ready for one more, hoping to compete for what would be a record-breaking eighth Cup Series championship.

“I know what this team is capable of, and I hope 2020 is one of the best yet,” Johnson said in the video.

At 44 years old, Johnson’s final Cup Series season will be his 19th with a motto of “#Chasing8 one final time”. He won five consecutive championships between 2006 and 2010 — which we argued gives him the edge in the NASCAR GOAT debate — and two more in 2013 and 2016, tying the mark set by Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt Sr. In addition to his seven titles, Johnson has 83 career wins, putting him in a tie at No. 6 all time with Cale Yarborough.

However, he’s been in a bit of a slump the last couple seasons. His last win was in June of 2017, and this season, he didn’t make the playoffs for the first time in his career.

Johnson is the latest star driver to leave the sport — although, he’s the most accomplished by far. In recent years, NASCAR has lost big names, like Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Danica Patrick and Carl Edwards, and has struggled to fill the growing void with someone who can transcend the sport.

His departure, however, is not surprising. Johnson has been repeatedly pressed about his future plans, especially with his three-year contract extension being up at the end of 2020.

Here’s how the NASCAR world reacted to Johnson’s announcement.

UFC on ESPN+ 22 reactions: Winning and losing fighters on social media

UFC on ESPN+ 22 winners and losers react on social media outlets such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Since the early days when the sport was anything but a mainstream endeavor, the MMA industry has thrived and survived through various websites, forums, and – perhaps most important – social-media platforms.

Fighters interact with fans, each other and many more through the likes of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, which helps outsiders get a deeper look into the minds of the athletes.

Following Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 22 in Sao Paulo, several of the winning and losing fighters, along with their coaches, training partners or family members, took to social media to react to the event or share a message with supporters.

Check out some of those reactions.

I put everything I could into this camp. I left no stone unturned. I went down to @charlesdobronxs hometown and fought him in his backyard. I got caught. I never felt better. But thats the fight game. Thank you Charles for the opportunity. You are a true warrior. Ill just pick myself up like I always do and get back to it after a little break. When I was in the hospital they offered me opiates for the pain I was in. The thought of saying yes fluttered through my mind. I looked at my fiancé @christinagambino72 and my friend @bzman83 who was with me and knew what I would lose and where I would go If i gave into that. My purpose is bigger than fighting and helping others is my true goal. Quitting fighting was a thought as well, but that is not an option. I know I have time and way more in me to give to this sport. My biggest fear is being mediocre, and I will not be. Thanks for the support everyone, I love you all!! #flash #sober #grateful #recovery #moretocome #rocky #comebackking

Mais importante que o resultado é o respeito sempre. Muito obrigado @antonioarroyoufc pela luta. Amateur kickboxer dies after bout in England

A 26-year-old amateur kickboxer has died following injuries sustained in a fight over the weekend in England.

(Editor’s note: The original version of this story listed Aletaha as an MMA fighter instead of a kickboxer.)

An amateur kickboxer has died as a result of injuries sustained in a K-1 bout over the weekend.

[autotag]Saeideh Aletaha[/autotag], 26, died Sunday morning after collapsing in the ring following a fight at Fast and Furious Fight Series 19, which was held Saturday at Central Hall in Southampton, England.

According to the BBC, Aletaha was rushed to Southampton General Hospital after sustaining head injuries during her bout and collapsed. Hampshire Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Aletaha’s home gym, Exile Gym in Southampton, posted on Facebook about the loss of their friend.

“Saeideh Aletaha was a lovely character with a beautiful soul. Her dedication to the sport was 110% traveling miles every day just to train. She found her place with us just a few months ago but has become apart of the family and will be sorely missed,” the post read in part.

Ryan Griffin’s sticky hands TD celebration is absolutely mesmerizing

Now this was a really good/creative TD celebration.

We’re fortunate enough to be living in the golden age of touchdown celebrations ever since the NFL did the right thing and started to allow players to have some fun after finding the end zone.

Did you see the Colts’ keg stand celebration yesterday? It was so great, even if the touchdown didn’t end up counting.

But New York Jets tight end Ryan Griffin might have had the best TD celebration in the league on Sunday, as he got super creative with this sticky hands move after reaching the end zone in the Jets’ win over the Washington Redskins.

Check this out. I watched it on a loop for like 5 minutes when I first saw it:

That’s pretty darn good.
