Social media reacts to UNC rallying to beat the Wolfpack

Social media reacts to the good, bad, and ugly of UNC stomping the Wolfpack to a 79-70 victory.

The UNC men’s basketball program welcomed ACC rival NC State to the Dean Smith Center, and the emotions were running high through social media.

Outside of beating Duke, a chance to silence the Wolfpack’s howl always brings out the best reactions. The Tar Heels took care of business in the first outing between these two, utilizing their high tempo in the second half to run away with the victory.

Saturday’s game was extra special for UNC, with it being Armando Bacot’s and potentially RJ Davis’s last game against NC State. However, the Wolfpack’s first half-play looked to spoil any plans to party on Franklin Street, causing some overreaction on social media.

One of the problems that has been an ongoing issue for UNC, is their inability to defend the three. The Tar Heels has seen teams shoot lights out from behind the arch this season, and NC State continued that by dropping seven triples (64%) in the first half.

Due to their strong shooting, NC State led UNC at the half 45-37, and panic started to settle in that an upset could be on the horizon.

The second half continued the rollercoaster affair, with intense moments popping up as emotions flared, causing players to get into each other faces. UNC quickly wiped away NC State’s lead, going on a 9-3 run in the first four minutes of the second half.

Once UNC retook the lead, they did not look back, reversing NC State’s hot shooting by forcing them into 15 straight missed shots. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels took full advantage, running the score up behind Elliot Cadeau and Harrison Ingram.

It was a special game for Cadeau finishing with 15 points and 7 assists. Ingram dominated on offense, leading all scorers with 22 points and 6 rebounds. Both Tar Heels undeniably played a huge part in Saturday’s win.

The win didn’t come without UNC’s usual dramatic finish. The Tar Heels had full control, before allowing NC State to creep back late. Luckily for UNC, they were able to contain the Wolfpack’s comeback efforts, but the inability to finish in dominating fashion continues to be a concern.

Now that UNC has officially swept NC State in the regular season, silencing their howl, we take a look at the good, bad, and ugly social media reactions to Saturday’s win.

Social media reacts to Tar Heels getting big win over Virginia

Saturday afternoon wasn’t pretty, but the UNC men’s basketball team beat UVA in a low-scoring game that helped it re-claim first in the ACC.

Anytime the Virginia men’s basketball team steps on the court, fans know whoever it plays is going to be an ugly game.

The North Carolina Tar Heels spent their Saturday in Charlottesville, Va. Many wondered if they’d be UVA’s next victim, succumbing to the Cavaliers’ pace that’s slower than Davis Ortiz trying to round the bases.

UNC didn’t play great offensively, highlighted by leading RJ Davis shooting a season-worst 1-of-14 from the field, but locked UVA down defensively in a crucial, 54-44 victory that moved it into sole place of first place in the ACC.

Cormac Ryan played offensive hero for North Carolina (21-6, 13-3), leading his team with 18 points on six made 3-pointers. Armando Bacot dealt with first-half foul trouble, but still registered a double-double in his sixth-consecutive contest.

The Cavaliers (20-8, 11-6) climbed back into Saturday’s rivarly tilt late, closing their deficit to 47-42 with just under two minutes to go, but Harrison Ingram drained his next shot to give the Tar Heels (21-6, 13-3) a much-needed cushion. Just like the first half in which it shot 5-for-30 from the field, UVA went cold late and sealed the UNC victory.

Odds didn’t favor North Carolina, which plays at a Lightning McQueen-fast pace, as it hadn’t won at UVA since Feb. 25, 2012. Saturday was going to be a game that determined how good the Tar Heels were – could it not only win in a tough, road environment, but weather long stretches of snail-like pace?

The Cavaliers aren’t going to score many points, due to their pace of play, but Saturday was super-encouraging for a UNC program that had been struggling defensively in recent weeks.

With the Duke loss, North Carolina is in sole position of first place in the ACC with two weeks left in the regular season. Let’s see how social reached to the huge victory:

Social media reacts to UNC’s rollercoaster loss to Syracuse

Social media reacts to UNC’s inability to stop Syracuse’s onslaught, continuing their bad stretch of Tuesday’s games.

The UNC men’s basketball program traveled North, taking on Syracuse, and it was deep waters early for the Tar Heels.

UNC’s trend of unlucky Tuesdays continued, with Syracuse getting off to an insane start from the field. The Oranges shot 63.2%(12-19) from the field and 57.1%(4-7) in the first 13 minutes of action grabbing a double-digit lead. However, UNC was able to weather Syracuse’s storm, going on a 17-6 run to retake the lead.

UNC got hot shooting 55.6%(15-27) from the field and 53.8%(7-13) from three in the first period. A large part of the Tar Heels’ offensive success came from their transfers, with [autotag]Cormac Ryan[/autotag] and [autotag]Harrison Ingram[/autotag] combining for half of the UNC first-half points.

The two Tar Heel’s names flooded social media, grabbing the spotlight as college hoop fans reacted to their fiery start. The first half ended at 42 a piece, with both teams having a piece of the momentum heading into the locker room.

The second half started in more disarray for UNC, starting 0-8 from the field. It was becoming more apparent that an upset could be on the horizon and the overreaction was all over social.

The roller coaster game continued, with the Tar Heels eventually regaining the lead despite Syracuse shooting 62% with under seven minutes left to play. That lead didn’t last long as the Oranges kept pouring it on. The Tar Heels were able to keep the game close, but the unbelievable shooting was too much, giving UNC their second road loss of the season.

The Tar Heels will be back in action Saturday as they welcome Tyler Nickel and Virginia Tech back to Chapel Hill. Before we get too ahead, we take a look at the social media reactions to UNC’s rollercoaster loss.

Social media reacts to Pittsburgh Steelers releasing Mitch Trubisky

Social media reacts to the Pittsburgh Steelers releasing former UNC quarterback Mitch Trubisky.

The Pittsburgh Steelers released quarterback Mitch Trubisky Monday, sending social media into a frenzy as the former UNC star hits free agency.

Trubisky didn’t have the Pittsburgh career he imagined, despite having a plethora of opportunities to become the next franchise quarterback. Instead, Trubisky struggled, starting seven games out of twelve games played, resulting in a 2-5-0 record.

In those 12 games, Trubisky completed 64.1% of his passes for 1884 yards, eight touchdowns, and ten interceptions. A huge problem for Trubisky was his pocket awareness, getting sacked at a 5.9% clip.

The move stems from the Steelers’ loaded QB room after Mason Rudolph’s impressive late run last season, while their first-round draft investment Kenny Pickett was nursing an injury.

Despite not working out in Pittsburgh, Trubisky should still get plenty of suitors looking to bring the Tar Heel in to compete for a backup role. Football fans discussed the short Trubisky era in Pittsburg, expressing what went wrong and what could be next.

Let’s take a look at how social media reacted to the Pittsburgh Steelers releasing Mitch Trubisky.

Social media reacts to Auburn’s grueling loss at Florida

Auburn fans were displeased with the Tigers’ efforts Saturday in Gainesville.

To say that Saturday’s action in Gainesville failed to produce satisfaction would be the understatement of the very young year.

No. 11 Auburn, who rattled off two-straight quadrant 1 wins before they met with Florida on Saturday, saw their momentum quickly fade into the Florida sun as they dropped an agonizing game to the Gators, 81-65.

Florida set the tone of the game early by jumping out to a 9-0 lead by the 17:32 mark in the first half and built a lead of 19 points in the half before taking a 42-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Riley Kugel and Walter Clayton Jr. each reached the 20-point mark in the game for the Gators while [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] was the lone Auburn starter to succeed on 50% of field goal opportunities. Auburn shot 42% from the field, which included an abysmal 17% effort from three-point territory.

Needless to say, Auburn fans were not happy watching their favorite team take one on the chin Saturday. Here is a look at the best social media reactions from Auburn’s loss to Florida.

Social media reacts to UNC washing away Miami Hurricanes’ comeback

We take a look at the good, bad, and ugly social media reactions to UNC’s second-half bounce back to beat the Miami Hurricanes.

The UNC men’s basketball program was on the road Saturday for an afternoon ACC matchup against the Miami Hurricanes.

It marked the second game straight game without Seth Trimble and his presence was definitely missed. After coming off a disappointing loss to Clemson where energy was lacking, the Tar Heels made up for it energizing fans in attendance and on social. It was the ideal bounce back, largely due to UNC’s fast-paced tempo.

What looked like a blowout in the making, quickly brought back painful memories with Miami going on multiple runs, including a 6-0 run in the final five minutes of the first half.  College hoop fans let their frustration out, while some took a chance to mock the Heels as Miami led at half 41-40.

The second half started out perfect for UNC, going on a 14-5 run to regain the lead. Whatever Hubert Davis said in the locker room resonated, with the Tar Heels looking like the same team that sent Duke packing.

But once again, like the first half, Miami came surging back late into the final minutes, putting UNC in upset territory and social media into a frenzy. Thankfully for the Tar Heels, under thirty seconds to go down three, the Hurricanes took a boneheaded three from their logo putting the ball and win back in UNC’s hands.

Armando Bacot continued his dominance, making history while doing so by becoming the third all time scorer in UNC history. Bacot finished with 10 points and 15 rebounds, moving to third in ACC history for double doubles.

This win was ideal for UNC despite Miami keeping up the Tar Heels. Elliot Cadeau shined, breaking out for 19 points and 8 assists. Davis continued his scoring output finishing with 25 points, and more importantly, UNC’s fight continued throughout.

The Tar Heels will now head to New York for a date against Syracuse, but before we get there we take a look at the good, bad, and ugly social media reactions to UNC washing away Miami Hurricanes comeback.

Social media reacts to yet another Tuesday loss for UNC basketball program

UNC put out a disappointing effort against Georgia Tech last week. The Tar Heels put out another one in tonight’s loss vs. Clemson.

Despite how poorly it played in the first half against Clemson on Tuesday, the North Carolina men’s basketball team clawed all the way back from a  first-half deficit and looked poised to take a late lead.

UNC knotted the score at 70 on Harrison Ingram’s 3-pointer. This was a welcome sight among the Smith Center crowd because Ingram earlier left the game with an apparent knee injury.

However, those were the last points North Carolina scored for nearly three minutes. In that time, Clemson started making shots again en route to a huge, 80-76 victory that gave the Tar Heels (18-5, 10-2 ACC) their second loss in three games.

The Tigers (15-7, 5-6) had a torrid start, thanks to hot shooting from Syracuse transfer Joe Girard (21 points on 7-of-16 shooting, 5-of-10 from deep). UNC, on the other hand, couldn’t hit water if it fell out of a boat. It was shooting less than 30% from the floor at one point in the first half.

Armando Bacot was a huge plus for North Carolina in this game, exploding for a 24-point, 13-rebound double-double. This came after Saturday’s victory over archrival Duke in which Bacot recorded 25 points and 10 rebounds.

RJ Davis, despite scoring 22 points, suffered a 7-of-22 night from the field. Cormac Ryan continued to struggle from the field, shooting 1-of-10.

The Tar Heels, even though they hold a one-game lead over Virginia in the ACC standings, are in danger of losing a possible top seed in the NCAA Tournament. Let’s see what social media had to say about the Tuesday dud.

Social media reacts to UNC basketball running Duke out of Chapel Hill

We take a look at good, bad, and ugly social media reactions to UNC Basketball’s dominating win over Duke.

The biggest rivalry in college basketball did not disappoint, and UNC gave fans in attendance and at home a night to remember.

The Tar Heels, coming off a nail-biting 74-73 loss to Georgia Tech, came out the gates hot, pushing the pace on turnovers and missed shots. Many of the transition buckets were beautifully executed, including one by Seth Trimble that stopped Duke in its tracks.

Duke kept battling through the first half, but UNC created separation, largely due to an aggressive Armando Bacot. In the first period, Bacot notched 12 points and 8 rebounds (3 offensive rebounds).

After a strong first half, UNC kept its foot on the gas. Harrison Ingram electrified the Dean Smith Center and social media with a remarkable performance. With Duke focused on RJ Davis, Ingram had his Tar Heel legacy game: He poured in 21 points and 12 rebounds.

The Tar Heels kept a double-digit lead for the majority of the second period, coming away with the 93-84 win. UNC strikes first in this year’s rivalry series, setting up a chance for a regular-season sweep. However, before we get too ahead of ourselves, we take a look at the good, bad and ugly social media reactions to UNC’s dominating win over Duke.

Social media reacts to ESPN’s ‘College GameDay’ at UNC for Duke showdown

Social media reacts to College GameDay at the Dean Dome ahead of the UNC vs Duke game.

The biggest rivalry in collegiate basketball is here as UNC plays host to the Duke Blue Devils.

Chapel Hill is already jumping well before tipoff as ESPN brought the “College Game Day” show to the Dean Dome. I had a sweet opportunity to get behind the scenes as a member of the media, taking in the atmosphere as Tar Heel chants echoed throughout.

Even with a few Duke fans looking to spoil the event, their cheers sounded more like whispers. UNC fans erupted anytime they tried to get loud. As UNC fans gave a peek of what to expect tonight with chants, social media was buzzing from the game day signs and conversations surrounding the big rival game.

UNC-Duke will tip off at 6:30 p.m. Eastern. With both programs ranked in the AP Top Ten, it should be as electric as the events leading up to it. It will be the last time Armando Bacot plays the Devils in Chapel Hill, and it marks the debuts of exciting transfers Harrison Ingram and Cormac Ryan for the rivalry game.

The game Saturday night is expected to be one of the ages, but before we get there, we take a look at some of the best social media reactions from “College GameDay.”
