Massive skate greets boaters in rare encounter caught on video

Footage shows the alien-like skate approaching the vessel in Deer Harbor, Wash., as if to offer a seasonal greeting.

A Washington State harbor master on Tuesday captured rare footage showing an enormous skate swimming to his boat as if to offer a seasonal greeting.

“Halloween is coming early to Deer Harbor this year!” Deer Harbor Charters announced via Instagram, in reference to the sea creature’s alien-like appearance.

“Appropriately named ‘Big Skate,’ this impressive creature is the largest in the skate (Rajidae) family. It is rare for us to have such an amazing encounter!”

The harbor master is Marc Broman, who presumably is among those chatting in the audio.

According to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, big skates range from central Baja California to the Bering Sea off Alaska. (The aquarium has at least one big skate on exhibit.)

They can measure 8 feet and they prey largely on shrimp, worms, clams and small fishes.

Big skates typically hide in the sand with only their eyes visible, so Tuesday’s surface encounter was indeed extraordinary.

Big skates are sometimes caught by anglers and, according to the International Game Fish Assn., the world record stands at 91 pounds, for a skate caught off Eureka, Ca., in 1993.

Angler lands enormous skate in ‘extremely rare’ catch from pier

A UK angler on Wednesday logged an extremely rare catch of a giant skate from a pier.

A U.K. angler on Wednesday logged an extraordinary catch of a giant skate from a pier.

Garry Mouzon, 34, a welder from Kirkwall, caught the estimated 121-pound common skate from the Hatston Pier.

He told The Orcadian that he had been hoping to catch a large skate for months. Two friends helped him get the fish onto the pier where it could be measured for an estimated weight before it was tossed back.

“The one I caught was a male, and the females are usually bigger,” Mouzon said. “So I’ll be going back to look for the girlfriend next.”

The Orcadian’s story was shared by the conservation group Blue Planet Society, which tweeted: “An extremely rare catch from a pier. Almost wiped out by bottom trawling, common skates are considered one of the UK’s most endangered species.”

The common skate, a.k.a. blue skate, is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN. Anglers now practice catch and release when targeting the species.

The International Game Fish Assn. lists as the world record a 214-pound skate caught off Orkney, U.K., in 1968.

EA announced a new ‘Skate’ game and people lost it on Twitter

A new Skate game is in the works at last.

There are few sports videogames that are as beloved as the defunct Skate series, which revolutionized skateboarding videogames back in the Xbox 360/PS3 era, and fans have been begging EA to make a sequel ever since Skate 3 released in 2010. The studio that made the Skate games, EA Black Box, was shut down in 2013, leaving little hope for a Skate 4 to ever materialize.

A full decade after the last game in the series was released, EA closed its EA Play event on Thursday with a stunning announcement. Crehttps://twitter.com/cantguardjulio/status/1273766877181939713ative director Cuz Parry and game director Deran Chung revealed that a new Skate game is in the works. Chung said that it’s “really early,” and no footage or teasers were shown, so it may be quite a while before we see what next-gen Skate can look like, but it’s happening, and gamers are ecstatic.
