ESPN panel projects several Boston Celtics in mix for 2022-23 hardware, with one major award won by team

Rookie of the Year, of course, is not among them.

When it comes to the dog days of summer, that period of the NBA calendar sometimes referred to as the “doldrums,” the focus of the NBA media turns toward ranking teams and players and projecting how the looming season will pan out.

When it comes to the major hardware handed out at the end of the 2022-23 season, the folks over at ESPN have some players in mind. A number of Boston Celtics make the cut for several awards as projected by the ESPN panel.

While there are a few categories without any Celtics presence — it seems fairly unlikely, for example, JD Davison would be in the running for Rookie of the Year — Boston is still well represented.

The Celtics are even seen as likely to win one of the major season awards, so let’s take a look at how Boston was rated by the panel.

WATCH: What are the chances of a Boston Celtic winning Sixth Man of the Year?

With such a deep bench, could we see one crowned in Boston this year?

The Boston Celtics significantly deepened their bench in a very busy offseason to date with additions who could see time in a sixth-man role like Josh Richardson, Dennis Schroder, and Al Horford, with young players like Payton Pritchard, Romeo Langford, and Aaron Nesmith all reasonable threats to force their way into a major role in the rotation as well.

With so much talent, it will be a process finding exactly the right combination of players and minutes, with some serious potential to find one of their players in the running for the NBA’s 2021-22 Sixth Man of the Year award.

With a recent top finisher in that race on their roster and several realistic options to join the fray, check out the discussion of the possibility of that particular bit of hardware getting awarded to a Celtic this season on this clip from the latest episode of the CLNS Media podcast “Winning Plays.”

How many Boston Celtics have been named 6th Man of the Year – and who were they?

Can you name the duo who won the award for Boston three years running? Better yet — can you name the seasons?

When you scan the history of the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award, it would be easy to miss the brief era of when the Boston Celtics dominated the annual honor bestowed upon the player deemed to be best player for their team coming off the bench as a substitute for a starter.

It was a short epoch spanning just three years that saw the Celtics win the honor for three consecutive years in a row, won by two Boston frontcourt players. If the award had been around before the 1982-83 NBA season, the Celtics might have had more winners given the team-oriented style of play and depth the carried throughout the 1960s.

But three awards in franchise history is still a very solid record — can you name the duo who won the honor for Boston, and the seasons in which they did it?
