Brian Kelly addresses transfer portal woes, says LSU won’t ‘buy players’

Brian Kelly said some of LSU’s issues in the portal stem from players who “want to be bought.”

It’s been a rough go of things during the spring transfer portal for the LSU football team.

The Tigers targeted three major players — defensive tackles [autotag]Damonic Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Simeon Barrow Jr.[/autotag] and cornerback [autotag]DaShawn Jones[/autotag]. All three have since committed elsewhere.

LSU has some serious holes to plug on a defense that was one of the worst in the SEC last season and lost multiple starters, and it’s looking increasingly unlikely that those problems will be addressed substantially this offseason.

Coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] recently addressed those concerns during an exclusive interview with Jacques Doucet of WAFB. While he recognized that the Tigers have had some issues in the portal, he implied that those have stemmed from a lack of fit.

Particularly, Kelly made it clear that LSU has no intention of “buying players” in the transfer portal.

“I think I made it pretty clear in a number of the press conferences that I had that we were in the market in recruiting and the transfer portal looking for defensive lineman,” Kelly said. “It hasn’t fared very well, quite frankly, because we’re selling something a little bit differently. And that is, we want to recruit, we want to engage, build relationships, we want to develop, retain and have success.

“We’re not in the market of buying players and unfortunately right now, that’s what some guys are looking for. They want to be bought. And I understand that NIL is part of this, and we have an incredible collective, we have very, very generous opportunities around the greater Baton Rouge area for NIL opportunities. So they are here, but we’re not going to go out and buy players. That’s not what this is about, this was never about that.

“We will develop you, we will get you ready for the next step… but if you’re just looking to get paid, you’re looking in the wrong place. If you like all the things that we do here in developing our players, bringing you into a championship program, playing in front of the best fanbase in America, playing for championships and having an opportunity for NIL, you should be a Tiger. But if you just want to get paid, this is not the place for you.”

Options are dwindling for the Tigers in the transfer portal, and that could lead to depth issues at a number of positions, particularly defensive tackle where the team returns just two players with game experience.

But Kelly seems confident in the current group, and for better or worse, he doesn’t seem to be keen on getting into bidding wars for players in the transfer portal.

LSU cornerback transfer target DaShawn Jones reportedly expected to commit to Alabama

LSU seemingly missed on another transfer portal target in the spring window.

Recent reports indicated that LSU had made contact with Wake Forest cornerback transfer [autotag]DaShawn Jones[/autotag] and was attempting to get him on campus for a visit.

However, it looks like that isn’t going to happen.

On Sunday evening, 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported that Jones is expected to commit to Alabama. A redshirt sophomore from Baltimore, Jones started nine of the 10 games he appeared in this past season for the Demon Deacons.

He finished the year with 37 tackles, a team-high three interceptions and a pair of pass breakups. Jones played in 22 games over the previous two seasons after redshirting his true freshman season in 2021.

Assuming Jones ultimately commits to the Crimson Tide, it will be another transfer target the Tigers have missed out on during the spring transfer portal window. They also targeted defensive tackles [autotag]Damonic Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Simeon Barrow Jr.[/autotag], who committed to Oklahoma and Miami, respectively.

LSU misses out another top defensive tackle transfer target

The Tigers are running out of options in the portal after Simeon Barrow Jr. committed to Miami.

LSU has a big need at defensive tackle in the spring transfer portal window, but its list of options is quickly dwindling.

After [autotag]Damonic Williams[/autotag] committed to Oklahoma on Thursday night, the Tigers got more bad news on Friday night when Michigan State defensive tackle transfer [autotag]Simeon Barrow Jr.[/autotag] committed to Miami, a move that many analysts predicted.

Without an addition to the defensive tackle room to this point, the Tigers are down to just two players who have game experience in [autotag]Jacobian Guillory[/autotag] and [autotag]Jalen Lee[/autotag] after [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag] and [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag] left for the draft.

The need at the position persists, and it’s getting to be slim pickings. Barrow ranked as the No. 7 defensive lineman in the portal, one spot behind Williams.

In four years with the Spartans, the Grovetown, Georgia, native appeared in 34 games with 30 starts. He had 110 career tackles with 18.5 for loss and 10.5 sacks. He also blocked a pair of field goals, forced two fumbles and recovered one.

Where does LSU go after defensive tackle Damonic Williams commits to Oklahoma?

With Damonic Williams headed to Oklahoma, where does LSUs defensive tackle room go from here?

With [autotag]Damonic Williams[/autotag] committing to Oklahoma, LSU missed on its top defensive tackle target. According to On3, Williams was the sixth-ranked defensive tackle in the portal this cycle and the best available during the spring window.

Earlier this spring, head coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said defensive tackle is where LSU will spend most of its attention in the portal. It remains the Tigers’ biggest need with just two scholarship players returning. The staff liked what it saw from [autotag]Jacobian Guillory[/autotag] in spring practice, but LSU needs another interior defender to emerge alongside him.

LSU hoped Williams would fill that void. Now, Kelly and defensive line coach [autotag]Bo Davis[/autotag] continue the search. And with Michigan State transfer [autotag]Simeon Barrow Jr.[/autotag] trending toward Miami, there aren’t many starting caliber DTs left in the portal.

That means LSU doesn’t have a ton of options. With Guillory entering his fifth year, the Tigers are counting on a breakout. According to PFF, he ranked fifth among SEC DTs in tackling grade last year while racking up 11 pressures.

Guillory’s a good player, but he can’t play every snap. LSU signed a highly-touted group of defensive tackles from high school, but you can’t count on true freshmen to make an immediate impact at that position, especially in the SEC.

Depth is a concern, too. The best defensive lines are able to keep guys fresh through rotating. That’s a luxury LSU won’t have in 2024.

Even if Kelly and Davis manage to find a player in the portal, he won’t have proven Power Four experience. The group LSU has now is the one it will roll into fall with.

The good news is LSU has one of the best defensive staffs in the country. LSU is strong at linebacker and defensive end, which could take some pressure off the interior. But there will be a couple of games this year where offenses try to wear LSU down up the middle.

LSU defensive tackle transfer target commits to Oklahoma

The Tigers missed out on one of their top transfer targets on Thursday night.

LSU badly needs to add some help along the interior of the defensive line in the transfer portal this spring, but it’s pool of options just got a bit smaller.

On Thursday night, TCU defensive tackle [autotag]Damonic Williams[/autotag] committed to Oklahoma. The native of Mission Hills, California, had previously visited LSU on Monday.

It’s a tough miss for the Tigers, who only return two players along the defensive line with game experience — Jacobian Guillory and Jalen Lee. For now, that need remains unfilled.

However, other targets remain available such as Michigan State’s [autotag]Simeon Barrow Jr.[/autotag] and Kent State’s [autotag]CJ West[/autotag].

Williams appeared in 26 games in two seasons in Fort Worth, totaling 60 tackles (9.5 for loss), 4.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

LSU defensive tackle transfer target commits to Auburn

LSU missed on a defensive tackle transfer prospect.

LSU came up short in landing one of its top transfer defensive tackle targets as [autotag]Philip Blidi[/autotag] committed to Auburn.

Blidi began his career at Texas Tech before transferring to Indiana. He hit the portal again after a year with the Hoosiers, this time garnering SEC interest.

According to On3’s Shea Dixon, Auburn made an impression on Blidi, and the buzz around his recruitment signaled Auburn following Blidi’s visit to the Plains.

Per PFF, Blidi was the 15th-best graded defensive tackle in the Big Ten last year while totaling 15 pressures and 11 run stops.

LSU needs to beef up its defensive tackle group and remains in pursuit of some of the portal’s top players, including DTs [autotag]Simeon Barrow Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Damonic Williams[/autotag].

Blidi bolsters an already solid Auburn transfer class that ranks 10th in the country, according to On3.

LSU remains well positioned with the seventh-ranked transfer class, but Blidi is a loss given the Tigers’ need at his position.

Brian Kelly said defensive tackle is the only position LSU is after in the spring portal window. [autotag]Jacobian Guillory[/autotag] and [autotag]Jalen Lee[/autotag] are the only two scholarship defensive tackles on the roster who saw time for LSU last year.

Despite the lack of numbers, Kelly feels good about where the position is headed with defensive line coach [autotag]Bo Davis[/autotag] leading the way.

Simeon Barrow and Damonic Williams offer LSU chance to rebuild defensive line

A couple of big name transfers could allow LSU to rebuild its defensive tackle room.

The spring portal window is open and one position is in especially high demand — defensive tackle. LSU head coach Brian Kelly even went so far as to say this is the only position LSU is looking to add.

Just a few days in, the Tigers already have a couple of key visits lined up. LSU will be hosting [autotag]Simeon Barrow Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Damonic Williams[/autotag] in the near future with the hopes of landing a defensive tackle that can make an immediate impact.

Following the spring game, Kelly credited defensive line coach Bo Davis with bringing a different level of talent to campus. We’re seeing more evidence of that here even if there’s a way to go in both players’ recruitments.

As it stands, LSU has one proven player at defensive tackle in fifth-year DL [autotag]Jacobian Guillory[/autotag]. The Tigers need help there is this defense wants to take a step forward.

With Barrow and Williams, LSU has the chance to add an instant upgrade to its defensive tackle group. Relying on the portal is a tricky way to build a team, but LSU’s gotten lucky with some difference makers on the DL entering their names.

It will be tough for LSU to land both of these players, and fans shouldn’t expect that, but even one would go a long way toward shoring up the middle of this defense. Depth would remain a concern, but a starting two of Guillory and Barrow or Guillory and Williams will do the job.

Former TCU defensive lineman to visit LSU

Damonic Williams would be a huge pickup for the Tigers if they were to land him.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] has repeatedly stated that he is actively looking for more defensive linemen in the [autotag]Transfer Portal[/autotag]. The Tigers have been linked to Michigan State defensive lineman, [autotag]Simeon Barrow Jr.[/autotag], and now they have been linked to TCU defensive lineman [autotag]Damonic Williams[/autotag].

Williams was honorable mention All Big-12 and honorable mention for Defensive Lineman of the Year while at TCU last year. In two seasons at TCU, Williams has played in 27 games and has registered 60 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks.

Williams is a guy who could bring a lot of experience to a defensive line room that has some talent but lacks the experience of playing in big games. Williams would be a huge pickup for the Tigers if they were to land him. He will be visiting LSU from April 30-May 1. He will also visit Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, Missouri and Oregon.

LSU’s 2024 recruiting class is currently ranked as the No. 8 class in the country by 247Sports.

LSU to host experienced Michigan State defensive tackle transfer this weekend

The Tigers are clearly aiming to bulk up the defensive line’s interior in the transfer portal.

LSU has a clear need along the interior of the defensive line, and it’s clear addressing that is a priority in the second transfer portal window.

The Tigers have already offered one of the best transfers at the position in Kent State’s [autotag]CJ West[/autotag], and now they’re reportedly in contact with Michigan State defensive tackle transfer [autotag]Simeon Barrow Jr.[/autotag]

A redshirt senior from Grovetown, Georgia, who entered the transfer portal on Thursday, Barrow appeared in 34 games over the last three seasons with the Spartans, starting 30 of them.

He has 110 career tackles (18.5 for loss) and 10.5 sacks. He has also forced two fumbles with one recovery while blocking two field goals, and he was an All-Big Ten honorable mention in 2022 and 2023.

According to On3, he’s down to six schools and expected to make a transfer decision quickly. On3’s Pete Nakos later reported that Barrow would visit LSU on Sunday.

LSU’s only two experienced returning players at the position are [autotag]Jalen Lee[/autotag] and [autotag]Jacobian Guillory[/autotag], and the depth behind them is lacking. LSU may be looking to add several bodies at defensive tackle, but Barrow would be a major pickup for coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag].
