Bari Broumand, full name Bardia Broumandgohar, is a 21-year-old Iranian racing driver who competes in F1 Sim Racing for Scuderia Ferrari Esports.

Broumand started kart racing when he was six years old and took to it instantly. He remembered when his father asked him how he felt about karting after the first few years.

“I would love to do this my whole life,” he said.

Iran’s racing scene did not cater to drivers as young as Broumand, so he had to race in classes with older drivers, in the Junior class. He was regularly on pole position and winning races during his early career.

“I need to go to the harder challenge. I need to go to a harder competition,” he remembered.

At 11 years old, he moved to Italy for seven months to race in a karting academy program.

“I felt the Italian championship was the first step of the European competition for me because I was like, OK, in this competition, you can’t just get pole and lead the whole race,” he said.

In 2017, at age 14, he raced in the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals representing Iran in the 125 Senior MAX class, but failed to qualify for the final race due to penalties for rules that he was unfamiliar with; ones they did not have in Iran.

When he was 15, he got to test an F4 car at the Adria International Raceway in Northeastern Italy for two days.

“It was amazing… everyone told me in the team you don’t need to go flat out, just learn the car first, and then you can just build up,” he said.

“I remember I went to the straight. I was like, let’s just go flat out to see how it feels.”

Broumand remembered being around one second slower than the competitive lap times at Adria, which gave him confidence that he could race formula cars.

After the test, Broumand spoke with his father who supported his racing career. “Unfortunately, my dad couldn’t support me anymore,” he said, referring to the high cost of racing in F4, F3, and F2. He and his father thought of other ways to get noticed.

Broumand purchased a Logitech G29 entry-level sim racing wheel and pedal setup. He invested time in learning the F1 video game and was good enough to enter the F1 Esports Pro Draft in 2019, but was too young by several days.

He waited another full year. In 2020, he was drafted by Mercedes AMG Petronas Esports Team. Broumand was their third driver and only raced in one round of the 2020 season.

The following year, he went to McLaren Shadow, developed a partnership with Lucas Blakeley, raced every round of the 2021 season, had two pole positions, and finished fifth in the championship.

In 2022, Broumand helped McLaren Shadow win the Constructors’ Championship and a Drivers’ Championship for his teammate Blakeley. Broumand finished in fourth position of the Drivers’ that season.

Then, he got an offer to drive for Scuderia Ferrari Esports and team up with Nicolas Longuet.

“Of course, when I saw the opportunity to join Ferrari… I was like I have to take this opportunity,” he said.

“You know, as a kid, everyone dreams of driving for Ferrari. I think it’s a great honor that everyone wants to take at some point. Everyone wants to drive for this special team.”

For the 2023 season, the series was renamed F1 Sim Racing. Due to organizational problems, the second and third events were delayed and the calendar extended into 2024.

Broumand put together a strong campaign this season, with wins at Spa, Las Vegas, and Qatar, but there were problems for the team elsewhere. Longuet was leading at Zaandvort when a game glitch cost them a potential win, and a poor result at Circuit of the Americas hurt their championship hopes. Broumand struggled at Jeddah and Silverstone.

“I said to myself, and I spoke to my dad as well, and he said, ‘If you believe in yourself that you can be a champion one day, then you have to just go to the races and bounce back. You can do it,'” he said.

“I remember when we went back to Maranello after event two, we spoke together and were like OK, we had so many unlucky moments, so many mistakes. But from now on, nothing will stop us. We will just go and we will dominate.

“We really pushed each other to try to be positive, and also thanks to Ferrari as well, they did some mental health sessions and it was really helpful.”

The team came back to the third and final event stronger than ever, finishing one-two in Round 10 and 11, to  clinched the Constructors’ title. The result also put Broumand back into contention for the Drivers’ Championship, although that honor eventually went to Frederik Rasmussen.

The final five-round event of the 2023 F1 Sim Racing World Championship was held in Jönköping, Sweden from May 7 – 9.

Both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships came down to the final races, and the competition was fierce.

Round 8 – Mexico City

Coming into the eighth round at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, the former leader of the championship Thomas Ronhaar needed major points to keep his campaign alive.

Ferrari driver Bari Broumand started the 36-lap race from pole position, from championship leader Frederik Rasmussen of Red Bull, Ferrari’s Nicolas Longuet, then Kick Sauber’s Ronhaar in the fourth position.

The track is known for its incredibly long main straight, which Ronhaar used to his advantage by gaining a slipstream. He managed to overtake the front three and gained the lead with a sensational move around the outside into the first corner.

Broumand retook the lead from Ronhaar on lap four, but the two decided to work together for the majority of the first stint by swapping the lead on the main straight. Rasmussen followed the leaders closely in third, as did McLaren driver Lucas Blakeley.

The top five soft tire runners pitted for mediums on lap 14, and the hard runners eventually pitted for mediums.

Mercedes driver Daniel Bereznay missed his braking point and slammed into the back of Blakeley on lap 30, which caused the McLaren driver to retire.

One lap later, Ronhaar was no longer willing to work with Broumand, who wanted to be in second position on the final lap to take advantage of the slipstream on the main straight.

The plan didn’t work for Broumand, who was unable to get past Ronhaar into the first corner. He tried elsewhere in the lap, but Ronhaar kept a cool head and took the win.

The top five were Ronhaar, Broumand, Rasmussen, Alfie Butcher of Haas, and Rubén Pedreño of Alpine. Ronhaar reignited his Drivers’ Championship campaign, Rasmussen extended his lead to 45 points, and Ferrari moved up to second in the Constructors’ Championship.

Round 9 – São Paulo

Not only did Ronhaar keep his title hopes alive in Mexico, he put his Kick Sauber in pole position for the next round at Interlagos in São Paulo, Brazil.

It was a split strategy for the 36-lap race. The top nine drivers started on soft tires, while the other 11 opted for hard tires. That was until a lobby restart was declared, and Mercedes driver Jarno Opmeer took the opportunity to switch to mediums.

Ronhaar maintained the lead into the first corner ahead of Rasmussen, then Blakeley overtook Aston Martin driver Simon Weigang for third position.

Rasmussen took the lead into the Senna ‘S’, but it became clear that Ronhaar and Rasmussen would swap the lead several times during the first stint.

Rasmussen pitted on lap 14 and Ronhaar pitted one lap later. Meanwhile, two-time champion Opmeer extended his medium tires as though they were hards, which allowed him to make places at the start and stay on the hard strategy.

Ronhaar rejoined behind Rasmussen and Blakely after pitstops, who were swapping the lead at the front. Opmeer stopped for soft tires on lap 20, which allowed him to cut through the field and made for an exciting race.

Blakeley and Ronhaar got past Rasmussen, which caused him to lose time and eventually he dropped back to sixth after Opmeer came through. Opmeer was on a tear, pulling off multiple double overtakes to try to make his strategy work and get to the front.

The end of this race was chaotic, with the lead changing constantly, but when it was all said and done Ronhaar clinched the win. Alvarro Carreton of Williams managed second position, then Butcher, Longuet, and Opmeer.

Once again Ronhaar bounced back from his rough end to the second event and closed the cap in the Drivers’ Championship. Rasmussen’s advantage was cut to 18 points. Red Bull also lost ground in the Constructors’ Championship to Ferrari.

Round 10 – Las Vegas

This was the first time that F1 Sim Racing competed at the Las Vegas Strip Circuit, so many drivers expected chaos and carnage for 25 laps under the lights.

Longuet and Ronhaar made up the front row, followed by Broumand and Haas driver Ulas Ozyildirim on the second row of the grid, then Opmeer and Rasmussen.

The top five were on softs and held their position through the start phase. Blakeley past Rasmussen into the first corner, which demoted him to seventh position.

Ronhaar took the lead from Longuet on lap three, then Broumand took the lead on lap seven. The three would trade the lead many times throughout the race by overtaking on the back straight.

After the soft runners at the front pitted around lap nine, Ozyildirim claimed the effective lead of the race for Haas.

Ozyildirim led for some time, then Broumand, then Ronhaar, but as time went on, it became clear that the slipstream on the back straight was too powerful. It was more advantageous to be in second or third.

The Ferraris set up Ronhaar to lead on lap 24 while Opmeer made his way to fourth position.

On the final lap, Broumand went for the move on Ronhaar and Longuet followed his teammate through for a Ferrari 1-2 finish. Opmeer joined the fight at the right time to get on the podium and left Ronhaar in fourth position.

The Ferrari team was ecstatic because it meant they took the lead in the Constructors’ Championship from Red Bull, and the Scuderia had an advantage of seven points. The top five were Broumand, Longuet, Opmeer, Ronhaar, and Ozyildirim.

Rasmussen finished in sixth position, so the gap to Ronhaar behind in the Drivers’ Championship stayed at 18 points. Broumand also put himself back into the conversation for the Drivers’ Championship.

Round 11 – Lusail

For the penultimate race of the season at the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar, Broumand qualified on pole position for the 29-lap night race.

Ronhaar challenged Broumand into the first sector, both on medium tires, and the two were wheel-to-wheel until the Ferrari had the edge. Then, Tom Manley of Alpha Tauri attacked Ronhaar for the second position with his grippier soft tires.

Manley past Broumand on lap two, but the Ferrari regained the lead when its medium tires warmed up.

Broumand, Manley, and Ronhaar pitted for hard tires on lap 10, which promoted Red Bull’s Josh Idowu to the lead.

Three laps later, Manley tagged the back of Broumand at the end of the first sector, which almost collected Ronhaar. Manley retired.

Longuet undercut his rivals to be at the front with teammate Broumand, and the two controlled the race from there. On lap 28, Ronhaar tried desperately to get past Longuet who defended for his teammate.

Ronhaar decided not to risk the podium finish, as that would hurt his Driver’s Championship fight against Rasmussen. Ferrari pulled off another 1-2 finish, their second of the day. The top five were Broumand, Longuet, Ronhaar, Weigang, and Rasmussen.

While it wasn’t definite after this race, the back-to-back 1-2 finishes meant that Ferrari clinched the Constructors’ Championship ahead of Kick Sauber and Red Bull.

The Drivers’ Championship came down to the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi. Rasmussen was still ahead of Ronhaar by 13 points, and Broumand was still a possible contender.

Round 12 – Yas Marina

Ahead of the final race of the season at the Yas Marina Circuit, Ronhaar gave himself the best chance to take the Drivers’ Championship away from Rasmussen by qualifying on pole position. However, if Rasmussen finished on the podium, then the title would be his.

Rasmussen was slightly out of position in seventh position. Ronhaar kept his lead at the start and the others helped position. There was a lot to play for all the way down the grid, so everyone drove mindfully at the front.

The top four started the race on soft tires, then three hard runners, and mixed strategies at the back.

On lap 8, Rasmussen past Bereznay for sixth position, one closer to the title. The top four were saving tires and batteries. Broumand passed Ronhaar for the lead, and it seemed that they were going to work together to build a gap to Blakeley and Rasmussen behind.

Broumand pitted for medium tires on lap 12, but Ronhaar stayed out one lap longer. Ronhaar rejoined behind Blakeley, Opmeer, and Carreton.

Rasmussen makes his way up to fourth position where he managed to remain for the rest of the race.

The last five laps of this Abu Dhabi Grand Prix were insane. Butcher decided that he didn’t care about any championship and wanted his second win in F1 Sim Racing. The Haas driver got to the front with some impressive driving.

Ronhaar became desperate at the end and made some forceful passes to try to win in the hopes that Rasmussen would finish lower than fourth. The top five were Butcher, Ronhaar, Bereznay, Rasmussen, and Longuet.

In the end, Frederik Rasmussen clinched the Drivers’ Championship ahead of Ronhaar and Broumand.

The first round of the F1 Sim Racing 2023 World Championship took place last November. What was supposed to be a two-race event became a single round, won by Thomas Ronhaar for Kick Sauber, after the organizers canceled the first race.

On April 2, F1 Sim Racing, formerly branded as F1 Esports, released the schedule for the second event. A three-day event was planned for April 10-12 for six races, two per day, with qualifying for the two races to be held in the morning.

Learn more about all six races that took place last week in the F1 Sim Racing 2023 World Championship.

Round 2 – Jeddah

The second championship race kicked off at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix venue, for a 25-lap night race (half the distance of F1).

Frederik Rasmussen of Red Bull qualified on pole position, followed by Bari Broumand of Ferrari and Alfie Butcher of Haas. The top three made an ideal start on the soft tires.

Williams Esports driver Ismael Fahssi lost places at the start because he opted for the medium tires. He managed to regain the third position once his medium tires switched on.

Ismael Fahssi and his teammate Will Lewis focused on F1 Sim Racing.

On lap nine, the top three made pit stops for medium tires, but Broumand and Butcher made contact on pit entry. Both cars sustained damage that compromised their races.

Ronhaar pulled off some impressive overtakes as he made his way to the front from sixth on the grid.

On the last lap, locked into a battle with Fahssi and McLaren’s Lucas Blakeley, Ronhaar went for a gap that barely existed between the inside wall and the McLaren. He made the move stick for the second position, but Rasmussen was five seconds ahead.

The top five were Rasmussen, Ronhaar, Fahssi, Blakeley, and Jake Benham of Mercedes. Ronhaar maintained his Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship lead for Kick through the first two races.

Round 3 – Spielberg

With the possibility of rain during the 36-lap race at the Red Bull Ring, home of the Austrian Grand Prix, Ronhaar looked to maintain his championship lead from pole.

Broumand and Ronhaar traded the lead of the race for 14 laps until Blakeley disconnected from the game. The organizers decided to neutralize the race with a Virtual Safety Car, which is uncommon for F1 Sim Racing.

This meant that some drivers who already pitted were now at a disadvantage and that Blakeley would get a chance to rejoin the session. One driver who felt his strategy was ruined by this VSC was Mercedes’s former champion Jarno Opmeer.

The ‘Flying Dutchman’ was so upset that he left his rig, which caused the AI to take over his car and lead to a speeding during VSC penalty. He did not finish Round 3.

Fahssi, Butcher, Broumand and others took the opportunity to pit.

Rain began to fall on the final lap. Butcher led the race since his battle for first after the VSC ended on lap 16. Ronhaar made some impressive overtakes on Fahssi and Benham to reclaim the positions lost during the VSC, but it was only good enough for second place.

The top five were Butcher, Ronhaar, Fahssi, Benham, and Broumand. Ronhaar maintained his Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship lead for Kick through three races.

After the race, Opmeer was frustrated with the VSC decision, and he claimed that it ruined the race strategy of five other drivers.

“I’m not sure who was in charge of this decision, but I think that person should never be allowed near any sports or Esports events again,” he said.

Round 4 – Silverstone

Opmeer qualified on pole position for Mercedes, but due to a three-place grid penalty, started at the 26-lap race at Silverstone (British Grand Prix) in fourth position.

Fahssi quickly passed Opmeer for fourth because the Williams driver started on softs, as did the top three drivers. Opmeer started on the alternative medium tires.

Mercedes driver Daniel Bereznay traded the lead with Blakeley, which allowed them to conserve tires and battery power.

By lap 10, everyone ahead of Opmeer had pitted, and he stayed out intending to nurse the medium tires deep into the first stint.

Opmeer pitted for soft tires on lap 15, which handed the lead to his teammate. Nicolas Longuet of Ferrari then took the lead from Bereznay one lap later.

Opmeer made his way to the front with some fantastic overtakes, the most notable being his double overtake on Bereznay and Longuet for the win.

The top five were Opmeer, Longuet, Bereznay, Fahssi, and Kick’s Brendon Leigh.

Championship leader Ronhaar only gained four points, which promoted Mercedes to the lead of the Constructors’ Championship.

Round 5 – Spa

The Spa Francorchamps Circuit, the venue of the Belgian Grand Prix, was dry for the 22-lap race.

Ronhaar was aggressive at the start, but lost three positions and dropped back to sixth place by lap four.

The long Kemel straight was the zone for overtaking in this race. Blakely, Broumand, and Alpha Tauri’s Tom Manley swapped positions on the Kemel for several laps.

The first round of pit stops came on lap eight, Manley, Rasmussen, Longuet, and Ronhaar pitted for medium tires.

Opmeer was well out of position in 16th on the grid and fought his way back to seventh by lap 19. He used a similar strategy to Silverstone earlier in the day.

Rasmussen led for some time, then Broumand took over until Blakeley went to the front on the final lap.

Into Blanchiment corner, on the final lap, Broumand sent it around the outside of Blakeley to win the fifth round.

Bari Broumand celebrates his win at Spa, next to him is his teammate Nicolas Longuet

The top five were Broumand, Blakeley, Rasmussen, Red Bull driver Josh Idowu, and Opmeer.

Ronhaar led the Drivers’ Championship by two points over Rasmussen, and Mercedes retained their lead in the Constructors’ Championship.

It was a frustrating two races for Ronhaar, who saw his championship lead disappear in one day. He was inconsolable after the race and appeared to be in tears.

Round 6 – Zandvoort

The entire field was running intermediate tires for a wet-to-dry race at Circuit Zandvoort, home of the Dutch Grand Prix.

The drivers completed one lap before they were told to stop racing due to a problem with grid positions. Many drivers and teams were confused during this period which lasted about 12 minutes.

The race was restarted with Longuet at the front, followed by Broumand, Butcher, Idowu, and Ronhaar.

There were few overtakes during the wet stage of the race. Ronhaar took the gamble for hards on lap 11, then Butcher, Idowu, and Blakeley did the same one lap later.

On lap 13, the track was considered dry and DRS was enabled. Broumand had defended the lead for Longuet, his Ferrari teammate, up to this point. The French driver had more than a three-second gap out front.

Broumand pitted for mediums, then Longuet came in one lap later. When Longuet left the pits he still had intermediate tires on his car, and his frustration was evident.

Broumand tried to slow the pack down again to allow Longuet a chance to rectify the situation, but Rasmussen overtook Broumand with some wheel banging.

Longuet pitted for dry tires on lap 19, but the damage was done to his race. Afterward, he was crying. The Ferrari team gathered around him to support him and block the cameras.

“I’ve put in a lot of hours, weeks, months of preparation into this,” he said. “To lose it like that in Zandvoort hurts a lot. Due to a fault of the game, not of my own.”

Rasmussen took the victory in what appeared at the start to be a Ferrari 1-2. The top five were Rasmussen, Broumand, Manley, Butcher, and Idowu.

Ronhaar finished in 11th position, outside the points, which meant that Rasmussen took the lead in the Drivers’ Championship by 22 points. Mercedes maintained their lead in the Constructors’ Championship by 7 points over Red Bull.

Round 7 – Austin

The final race of this LAN event was set for 28 laps around the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), home of the United States Grand Prix.

Blakeley started on pole position but lost places in the early stages because he opted for the hard tires.

On lap eight, Broumand passed Rasmussen for the lead at the end of the first sector. The soft runners came into the pits on lap 11 for mediums.

The hard runners pitted on lap 15 for medium tires. Broumand led Rasmussen, from Leigh and the Williams of Alvaro Carreton.

Blakely was unable to make his strategy of starting on the hard tires work, but he did overtake Carreton for fourth position.

On the final lap, it came down to Broumand and Rasmussen for the race win. It was Rasmussen who wisely waited in second position for the final lap, and he used DRS on the back straight to pass Broumand for the win.
