Ravens officially release three players, place RB J.K. Dobbins on injured reserve

The Ravens officially made four roster moves, including placing RB J.K. Dobbins on injured reserve

The Baltimore Ravens have slowly but surely been trimming their roster to 53 players ahead of the cutdown day deadline. The team is going to have to part ways with some very good football players, much like they’ve already done over the past few weeks.

After Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reported that Baltimore was moving on from three wide receivers, the Ravens officially confirmed two of those moves, while also announcing the termination of a vested veteran offensive lineman as well as placing running back J.K. Dobbins on injured reserve with a season-ending knee injury that he suffered in Baltimore’s final preseason game of 2021.

Schofield was signed in June for offensive line depth. He can play both inside and outside, but got most of his time at tackle for the Ravens.

Gray was also signed in June, and acted as a return specialist for the team. Mariner was signed in August for wide receiver depth as multiple players at the position went down with injuries in a short amount of time.

Dobbins suffered a torn ACL in Baltimore’s final preseason game of 2021. The injury ends his season, and being placed on injured reserve was the final step in that process. He will now look to 2022 as his breakout year after an unfortunate string of events.

The Ravens will need to trim their roster to 53 players by Tuesday, August 31st at 4pm EST.

Ravens reportedly cut multiple WRs ahead of cutdown day deadline

The Ravens reportedly made a few roster moves ahead of the Tuesday cutdown day deadline

The Baltimore Ravens will have to trim their roster to 53 players by Tuesday, August 31st at 4pm EST. Multiple tough decisions await Baltimore, as there are many talented players who deserve to make the team, but won’t because of how little space is available throughout the roster, as well as more depth needed at certain positions.

The Ravens already made a handful of moves leading up to Tuesday, but as the deadline quickly approaches, more will be reported and announced. On, Monday it was reported that Baltimore had parted ways with three wide receivers.

The Ravens brought in a plethora of new receivers over the past few months, especially recently due to injuries at the position. However, with players such as Brown returning to practice, the wideouts brought in for depth purposes are no longer needed.

Cain was signed to a reserve/futures deal in January of 2021. He had a nice start to training camp for Baltimore before being sidelined with an injury for multiple weeks. He recently returned to the field and suited up in the Ravens’ final preseason game, but struggled to the tune of one catch for five yards on five targets, dropping multiple passes.

Gray was signed by Baltimore in June, and spent time as a return specialist for the team as well as receiver. It was unlikely he was going to make the 53-man roster.

Mariner was signed in August as depth, and was also unlikely to make the final team. All three players could be practice squad candidates.

The Baltimore Ravens have been dealing with plenty of injuries over the first few days of 2021 training camp, especially at wide receiver. Last week they signed wideout Michael Derius to add more depth to the position while some of their other receivers heal, and on Monday they added yet another pass catcher.

Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic noted on Monday morning that wide receiver Siaosi Mariner was on the field with the team. While no roster move or corresponding move was announced, it seemed that he was a new addition to the roster.

Later in the day, Zrebiec reported that in order to make room for Mariner, Baltimore was waiving second-year tight end Jacob Breeland.

Mariner is a 6-foot-2, 190 pound receiver who accumulated 80 receptions for 1,196 yards and 11 touchdowns over his two years of college between Utah and Utah State. He signed with the Las Vegas Raiders as an undrafted free agent after the 2021 draft, but was waived in late-July.

A former University of Oregon star, Breeland signed with the Ravens as an undrafted free agent after the 2020 draft. Some viewed him as the best tight end prospect in the 2020 class before he suffered a gruesome knee injury just six games into his final college season after already putting up 26 receptions for 405 yards and six touchdowns. His injury never allowed him to play in a game or even step on the practice field for Baltimore.
