Huskers top offensive line transfer target picks Kentucky Wildcats

Shiyazh Pete will take his talents to Kentucky.

Nebraska football transfer portal tackle target Shiyazh Pete chose the Kentucky Wildcats over the Michigan Wolverines and Nebraska on Sunday. He made the announcement on social media earlier in the day.

Nebraska was thought to be in the mix for Pete. At one point, a report indicated that Michigan and Nebraska were the favorites to land him. Nevertheless, Kentucky was able to move in and land his commitment.

Pete was a first-team All-Conference USA selection in 2023. He landed on the 2024 Lombardi Award watch list to begin the year. He played in the final six games for New Mexico State last season as he was coming back from an injury.

The Huskers have been looking for offensive line depth in the portal. They were able to land Alabama Crimson Tide offensive tackle Elijah Pritchett earlier this month. It will be interesting to see if they upgrade their offensive line further in the portal or if they will stand pat at the position.

Kentucky football lands a huge transfer portal offensive lineman

Kentucky gets a commitment from offensive tackle transfer Shiyazh Pete.

The biggest task facing Kentucky football and coach Mark Stoops this offseason is fixing the offensive line. They have added multiple linemen through the transfer portal already, and have now added the left tackle they were seeking in Shiyazh Pete.

Pete heads to Lexington after spending four years at New Mexico State. There, he was a three-year starter at left tackle, so he fills a big need for Stoops and the Wildcats.

At 6’8″ and 320 lbs, Pete is a mammoth tackle who likely starts at left tackle on a revamped offensive line. Kentucky added Wallace Unamba, Evan Wibberley, Joshua Braun, and Alex Wollschlaeger already through the portal. Pete becomes the fifth addition to a new-look Big Blue Wall.

Kentucky football is coming off of their worst season in a number of years. They are looking to bounce back, and hit the transfer portal to address a number of positions, but none more than the offensive line.

The Wildcats beat out teams like the Michigan Wolverines and Nebraska Cornhuskers to get a commitment from Pete. He is another good addition to the team this offseason.

Huskers in recruiting battle for portal offensive tackle

The Huskers look to be in the mix for another offensive tackle

Nebraska football is battling with the Michigan Wolverines for one of the top offensive tackles in the portal. Shiyazh Pete is being sought after between the two schools, according to a report from On3’s Pete Nakos.

The lineman would bring additional experience to the Huskers’ offensive line. He played over 1,800 snaps for the New Mexico State Aggies in three years and was a 2023 All-Conference USA First-Team selection. He did not play until week eight of the 2024 season, doing so at the left tackle spot. He measures in at six-foot-eight, 287 pounds.

Nebraska football has made it a point to revamp the offensive line and the transfer portal. They landed a commitment from Alabama offensive tackle Elijah Pritchett last week as they look to replace players such as Bryce Benhart. The health of Turner Corcoran and Teddy Prochazka is still up in the air as well, as both players suffered season-ending injuries in 2024.

The Huskers can undoubtedly benefit from another offensive lineman, and someone of Pete’s caliber would fit the bill. The program has done a good job of identifying needs in the portal, and it will be interesting to see how this recruitment goes.

Huskers set to host New Mexico State offensive tackle

The Huskers remain busy via the transfer portal.

Nebraska football is set to host an offensive lineman this week. New Mexico State left tackle Shiyazh Pete is expected to visit the Huskers.

Pete spent four seasons with the Aggies after walking on his freshman year. Following no appearance in 2021, the Missoula, Montana, played in 12 games in 2022. New Mexico State finished three consecutive 200-plus yard rushing games to close the season and a program-record 25 rushing touchdowns.

He started in all 15 games at left tackle in the 2023 season, helping the Aggies to a 10-5 record. Pete earned First Team All-Conference USA and landed on the 2024 Lombardi Award Watch List.

Pete played in the final six games for New Mexico State in 2024 following an injury but allowed only five pressures and committed zero penalties.

The Huskers currently have no offensive linemen from the transfer portal this offseason. The Nebraska pipeline currently holds redshirt freshmen Gunnar Gottula and Grant Seagren at left tackle. Both Gottula and Seagren stand at 6-feet-6, and 305 pounds. Pete is 6-feet-8 and 320 pounds.

Kentucky offers another offensive tackle in the transfer portal

Kentucky football has offered former New Mexico State tackle Shiyazh Pete.

There’s no doubting that the offensive line was a major weak point for Kentucky football in 2024. That has led to them adding four linemen out of the transfer portal for next year already. Now, they’re trying to add another by offering tackle Shiyazh Pete.

Pete posted on the social platform X that the Wildcats had offered him. He previously posted that he had offers from the USC Trojans, Michigan Wolverines, and Vanderbilt Commodores as well.

At 6’8″, 320 lbs, Pete is a huge tackle who would be a potential starting left tackle in Lexington. He has plenty of experience at that position, having started 31 games there for New Mexico State.

Pete is projected to choose Vanderbilt by 247sports, so getting him to Kentucky is a long shot, but he would certainly fill a huge need. If the Cats want to bounce back in 2025, it will begin with an upgraded offensive line. That remains a work in progress.
