Clemson’s ‘missile’ signee is what a ‘safety should look like’

Clemson needed a safety as a part of its 2022 recruiting class and it went and got one of the best in the country, according to head coach Dabo Swinney.

Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) four-star safety Sherrod Covil inked with Swinney’s program on Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period for class of 2022 football recruits.

“I’m extremely excited about what he brings to the Clemson Tigers,” Clemson co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach Mickey Conn said via Covil’s official Clemson bio. “He brings an unbelievable work ethic. He is a hard-hitting safety, man. He loves the physicality of the game. He’s a ballhawk…He’s played both sides of the ball. He loves the game of football. I love everything about him.

“Academically, he’s a really good student. He comes from a really good home and a good family. His mom, his dad, his two sisters and his younger brother are just fantastic people. They really fit the culture and the family atmosphere that we have here at Clemson.”

Covil always felt like he was a priority from the time he was offered and never wavered in his belief that Clemson is where he was meant to spend his next chapter.

Though, in the wake of Brent Venables’ departure to Oklahoma, he needed to digest the news and make an informed decision. Covil took a step back and eventually reaffirmed that he was “All In.”

Covil (6-0, 190) is a consensus top-200 defensive back, who helped Oscar Smith win consecutive 6A state titles in 2020 and 2021.

“Covil just won a state championship as well,” Swinney said during his National Signing Day press conference. “This is what a safety should look like when you watch this guy play when you watch him run and you watch him tackle. He’s a very, very good player coming from a great program that’s had a ton of guys over the years up there in Virginia.”

He plans to play in the Under Armour All-America game in Orlando, Fla. on Jan. 2, 2022, and is set to enroll at Clemson a week later.

Covil will push to play early alongside the ACC’s Defesnive Rookie of the Year in Andrew Mukuba.

Even though the addition of Covil certainly boosts Clemson’s secondary, Swinney indicated that the Tigers would like to add another safety between now and February.

Clemson has lost two safeties — Joseph Charleston and Ray Thorton III — to the transfer portal, while longtime starter Nolan Turner is out of remaining eligibility.

While Covil helps mitigate those losses, the Tigers still need another addition to the backend of their secondary, especially after IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) four-star athlete Keon Sabb decomitted from Clemson and later flipped to Michigan.

“We’re very fortunate and blessed at Clemson to have Sherrod Covil,” Conn said.

Saturday afternoon was a big one for Clemson’s commits.

Sherrod Covil led Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) to a State Championship victory. The four-star safety pledge finished his high school career as a back-to-back 6A State Champion.

Though, Covil wasn’t the only one playing with a State Championship on the line Saturday. Clemson’s five-star quarterback commit Cade Klubnik led Westlake (Texas) to a 45-14 victory over Katy (TX.) in the state semifinals, earning a trip to the state title game.

As for Myrtle Beach (S.C.) four-star wide receiver commit Adam Randall and Greenville (S.C.) three-star tight end pledge Josh Sapp, the duo combined for four catches with 60 yards and a touchdown during Saturday’s Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl.

With a State Championship on the line this weekend, Oscar Smith High School took in one of its final practices before the big game.

Preparing for that fateful day was all that was on this Clemson class of 2022 commit’s mind. That was until his head coach, Chris Scott, had a surprise for him at the end of practice on Thursday.

Clemson four-star safety commit Sherrod Covil was presented with the jersey and the honor of playing in the Under Armour Next All-American Game on Jan. 2, 2022.

“We have a guy here that as a team, we get to celebrate. It’s been the first one in a long time for Smith,” Scott said Thursday. “It’s been a long time for Smith, but one of the top guys in the nation, in the top-50, one of the best safeties, just got that All-American jersey.”

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and his staff visited with another class of  2022 defensive commit on Thursday evening.

Swinney, along with Clemson’s defensive coaching staff, made an in-home with four-star safety commit Sherrod Covil.

This comes on the heels of Brent Venables’ departure to Oklahoma, which Covil previously indicated to The Clemson Insider wouldn’t affect his commitment status.

“Yes, I’m All in,” he said.

Nonetheless, Clemson still made the trip to Chesapeake (Va.) to visit with the Oscar Smith standout just two days before he plays in the State Championship.

Thursday was an opportunity to meet with his position coach and lead recruiter, Mickey Conn, who will now serve as the Tigers’ co-defensive coordinator along with former defensive analyst Wesley Goodwin.

TCI confirmed Clemson’s coaching staff changes on Thursday, as Goodwin has been a fixture on the recruiting trail since Venables accepted his first head coaching position Sunday.

Covil reacted to the in-home viist with the staff on social media, which you can check out below:

The Clemson Insider has some good news to share regarding the commitment status of a top Clemson commit.

TCI exchanged messages with Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) four-star safety commit Sherrod Covil regarding if he still plans on signing with the Tigers during the early signing period.

“Yes, I’m All in,” Covil replied.

He committed to Clemson just a week after the program’s Elite Retreat and hasn’t doubted his decision for a second.

“They had made me a priority and never wavered since the day I was offered,” he told TCI back in June. “When I stepped on campus, they were very attentive and made sure not just myself, but we all felt the Clemson family love. Being there, you know it’s a special place. A couple of us went to Coach’s house and Mrs. Swinney was like another mom. The mi casa es su casa was on full display as they treated [me] like their own. The entire experience was just love.”

Covil (6-0, 190) is ranked as the No. 13 safety in the 2022 Class, per 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Sherrod Covil took his official visit to Clemson over the weekend with his family and once again came away impressed.  The Clemson Insider caught up with the four-star safety out of Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, Va) to get the details on his visit.

How did you enjoy the official visit?

Covil: “It was good. It was a lot of fun.”

What was the highlight of the visit?

Covil: “Really, hanging out with the players and getting to know each other better. It was real good to meet the IMG guys because I had already known Keon [Sabb] and I already knew Daylen [Everette], so I really just got to meet Jihaad [Campbell] from IMG. He’s real cool and it was cool getting to know him.”

Who was your player host and what was it like spending time with that person?

Covil: “It was Malcolm Greene. It was cool because he’s a VA guy. I’m a VA guy and I already knew him before that. I knew him beforehand because when I was in 10th grade, I played his team (Highland Springs) when he was a senior. So we had really already known each other well.”

What did you hear from the coaches during the visit?

Covil: “Nothing that they really hadn’t said before because I’d already been to a few games. That wasn’t my first time there. I went over some of the defense too, like some of the drills and plays and stuff like that. Really just assurance basically.”

What has [safeties coach] Mickey Conn said about potentially coming in and playing early?

Covil: “He said I’m gonna have to learn the [playbook]. It’s gonna be difficult, but it shouldn’t be that difficult. He spoke about me getting in there, maybe getting me and [Andrew] Mukuba in at safety.”
