Swinney ‘super pumped’ to have entire defense available

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is ready to see his defense have “all hands on deck” against Florida State on Saturday.

Clemson’s defense could return all 11 starters against Florida State on Saturday, and head coach Dabo Swinney is more than ready for the unit to be at full strength.

Although defensive end Xavier Thomas returned last week against Boston College, several other starters were out that game — a reoccurring theme for the Tigers since Week 1.

Now, the coaching staff is optimistic that defensive tackle Bryan Bresee, cornerback Sheridan Jones and safeties R.J. Mickens and Tyler Venables will all be available against the Seminoles.

After the team’s Wednesday practice, Swinney expressed his excitement to see the defense have all its players at its disposal.

“I’m super pumped to have all hands on deck,” Swinney said. “They’ve all been there at one point or another, but having everybody available at one time, we really haven’t had that just yet. Hopefully, we’ll be able to really play at a high level and play sharp, play smart, keep guys fresh.”

Bresee has missed the last two games due to a kidney infection, Jones has been out three games for a stinger, while Mickens and Venables only missed last week.

Even if the entire group returns to the field this week, the defense will have their hands full against a balanced and productive Florida State offense.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney updated the status of three injured defensive backs who missed the Tigers’ latest game, including a pair of starters.

Cornerback Sheridan Jones (stinger) and safety R.J. Mickens (undisclosed) were held out the Tigers’ win at Boston College over the weekend. So was fellow safety Tyler Venables, who didn’t travel after sustaining minor injuries in a moped accident.

But Swinney said Mickens and Venables will be back for Clemson’s game at Florida State on Saturday. As for Jones, Swinney said he’s still day to day and that Tuesday and Wednesday will be important days of practice for the senior before determining his status for this weekend’s game.

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Clemson will once again be without some key contributors in tonight’s game against Boston College, including some new absences in the secondary.

But the Tigers’ defensive line could get a boost against the Eagles.

Cornerback Sheridan Jones is among the players who didn’t make the trip to Alumni Stadium, according to the travel roster released by the team. Safeties R.J. Mickens and Tyler Venables, two of the team’s top four tacklers, also didn’t travel for the Tigers, who are looking for their 12th consecutive win over the Eagles.

Running back Kobe Pace also didn’t travel.

Meanwhile, Xavier Thomas did travel and could see his first action of the season tonight. The senior defensive end, who had 3.5 sacks and a team-high 17 quarterback pressures a season ago, has been out since injuring his foot during preseason camp.

Corner Malcolm Greene also made the trip after missing Clemson’s win over NC State last week with an undisclosed injury, but it’s yet another game in which the Tigers’ secondary won’t be whole. Jones (stinger) is missing his third straight game while Mickens, who’s started the last three games, will miss his first game of the season despite Swinney saying following last week’s games that the junior was “fine” after sustaining an undisclosed injury in that game.

As for Venables, he finished last week’s game but sported a protective boot on his left foot early this week. Sources tell The Clemson Insider that Venables also sustained minor injuries in a moped accident this week.

Bryan Bresee also didn’t travel, though that was expected. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said earlier in the week that Bresee wouldn’t be available for today’s game. The Tigers’ star defensive tackle also missed last week’s game with a non-football medical issue.

Five Clemson players to keep an eye on against Boston College

Clemson will look to win its sixth game of the season on Saturday, and here are five Tigers to watch vs. Boston College.

Coming off back-to-back ranked wins, No. 5 Clemson will look to win its sixth game of the 2022 season on Saturday against the Boston College Eagles.

Sitting at 5-0 on the season, the Tigers have pushed past two of their most difficult games of 2022, but they are not taking the Eagles lightly.

Clemson defeated Boston College by six points in each of the last two matchups, including last year’s game between the two teams, when it came down to a game-winning fumble recovery by defensive end K.J. Henry late in the fourth quarter.

Boston College has struggled this season, but there will be plenty of juice from the Eagles, as the game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. EDT primetime kickoff, and it’s the Eagles’ Red Bandana game.

That said, here are five Tigers fans should keep a close eye on against Boston College.

Following fifth-ranked Clemson’s 30-20 win over No. 10 NC State on Saturday night at Death Valley, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney provided updates on the statuses of a few injured defensive backs.

The Tigers lost junior safety R.J. Mickens with an injury during Saturday’s game.

“Mickens is fine,” Swinney said. “We’ll see where he is (Sunday). I thought it was his shoulder but it wasn’t. So, that was good.”

Senior cornerback Sheridan Jones (stinger) and junior cornerback Malcolm Greene (undisclosed) were among the defensive players who were out for Saturday’s game.

“Sheridan couldn’t go,” Swinney said. “We actually thought he was going to be able to play as of yesterday. But he just wasn’t quite there. Malcolm, same thing.”

Cornerback Sheridan Jones (stinger) and defensive end Xavier Thomas (foot) are not dressed for the game against the Wolfpack.

Jones sustained a stinger early in the Louisiana Tech game on Sept. 17. He didn’t return and did not play in last week’s game at Wake Forest.

Thomas has yet to play this season after suffering a broken foot during preseason camp.

During his radio call-in show Monday night, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was asked about the Tigers’ defensive back situation heading into this weekend’s game against NC State.

Safety Andrew Mukuba and cornerbacks Sheridan Jones and Malcolm Greene all did not play in last Saturday’s game at Wake Forest, but Swinney hopes to have them back for this Saturday’s game against the Wolfpack at Death Valley.

“Hopefully we’ll get some of those guys out – Mukuba and Sheridan and Malcolm – three older guys that were out,” Swinney said. “We definitely had a little bit of a baptism on some guys.”

Mukuba, a freshman All-American safety last season, missed his second straight game after recently dislocating his elbow in practice. Jones sustained a stinger early in the Louisiana Tech game and didn’t return. Greene (undisclosed) also did not make the trip to Winston-Salem.

Swinney touched on some different things the Tigers need to polish up in the secondary against NC State.

“Just playing our technique, playing the call that’s called, understanding the fundamentals – not peeking in the backfield, eyes on the right things,” Swinney said. “I mean, there’s just a lot of things that we just did really poorly in the third quarter. So, definitely got a lot of work to do this week to get ready for another really, really good team – the best team we’ve seen to this point coming in here.”

During his Zoom conference call with the media Sunday evening, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was asked about this defensive back who did not make the trip to Winston-Salem for Saturday’s game against Wake Forest.

Swinney was asked if there is any long-term concern injury wise with senior cornerback Sheridan Jones, who sustained a stinger early in the Louisiana Tech game on Sept. 17 and didn’t return.

“Well, I don’t know,” Swinney said. “I think there’s always (concern) when you’ve got to be held out of a game. But he seems to be doing well and hopefully will be back this week.”

Jones contributed three tackles in the season opener against Georgia Tech and added three tackles and a pass breakup vs. Furman.

The Norfolk, Va., native entered the 2022 season credited with 52 tackles (1.5 for loss), eight pass breakups, two interceptions and a fumble recovery in 855 defensive snaps over 38 games (11 starts).

Following fifth-ranked Clemson’s 51-45 double-overtime win at No. 21 Wake Forest on Saturday in Winston-Salem, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was asked about Sheridan Jones, Andrew Mukuba and Malcolm Greene, all of whom were not on the Tigers’ travel roster for Saturday’s game.

Swinney was asked if any of the three defensive backs were close to playing against the Demon Deacons. Swinney indicated that he hopes they’ll be back for next Saturday’s game vs. NC State.

“Yes, they were (close), and obviously we could’ve used somebody,” Swinney said. “But hopefully they’ll be back.”

Mukuba, a freshman All-American safety last season, missed his second straight game after recently dislocating his elbow in practice. Jones sustained a stinger early in last week’s game against Louisiana Tech and didn’t return.

Greene (undisclosed) also did not make the trip to Winston-Salem.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Clemson will be without multiple starters for its ACC showdown with Wake Forest at Truist Field.

The team has released its travel roster for today’s game, and defensive backs Sheridan Jones and Andrew Mukuba are not on it. Mukuba, a freshman All-American safety last season, is set to miss his second straight game after recently dislocating his elbow in practice. Jones sustained a stinger early in last week’s game against Louisiana Tech and didn’t return.

Defensive end Xavier Thomas (foot), backup lineman Tre Williams (knee) and defensive back Malcolm Greene (undisclosed) also did not make the trip to Winston-Salem. Thomas has yet to play this season after sustaining his injury during preseason camp.

The defensive line should get a boost with Bryan Bresee (recent death in family) and Tyler Davis both available. The Tigers were without their starting defensive tackle duo a week ago, but both traveled with the team and went through pregame warmups.

Kickoff is set for noon. The game will be televised on ABC.
