As Texas’ recruiting has picked up late in the month of August and into September, one gaping hole has been missing — the wide receiver position.
Four-star Armani Winfield is the only committed at the position and has been in the class longer than anybody. Other targets are out there within the state like five-star Evan Stewart and four-star Brenen Thompson.
An out-of-state option remains in play as well. Four-star Shazz Preston is the main one with his 6-0, 190-pound frame considered the ideal fit for Steve Sarkisian’s system. A well-rounded receiver who can play over the field seems to be the description for all of Texas’ targets.
Preston named his top four on Monday, with Texas joining three SEC schools. Alabama, Georgia, and the hometown LSU round out the list.

Sarkisian and his staff have been making strides in Louisiana in the past couple of weeks. Three-star wide receiver and once Colorado commit Ronald Lewis committed less than 24 hours after being offered by Texas. Four-star edge J’Mond Tapp is a verbal commit as well despite top SEC programs pushing.
Even with LSU starting the year 0-1 and possibly having some off-the-field issues, pulling kids out of the state of Louisiana is going to be tough. Some schools are able to win hometown recruiting battles, no matter the situation. The Tigers may be the best example in the country.
Preston made his official visit to Austin back in June. If Texas wants to pull this one out, getting the four-star on campus is more than likely necessary. Sarkisian’s offensive explosion must continue on the field too.
On the 247Sports composite, Preston is the No. 56 overall player and the No. 5 wide receiver in the 2022 class. Within The Boot, he ranks as the No. 4 prospect.
