The Green Bay Packers will have a new leader of their special teams in 2021.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Matt LaFleur and the Packers are parting ways with special teams coordinator Shawn Mennenga.
LaFleur initially hired Mennenga when building his first coaching staff with the Packers in 2019. Over the last two seasons, the Packers ranked 26th and 29th in the NFL in Rick Gosselin’s annual special teams rankings.
This season, the Packers special teams were responsible for numerous mistakes and big plays, including two punt return touchdowns, a blocked punt and a botched onside kickoff recovery. They also had one of the NFL’s worst return units on both punts and kicks.
Mennenga replaced Ron Zook, who was Mike McCarthy’s final special teams coordinator. The Packers ranked 32nd in special teams before Mennenga’s arrival.
