UFC 308 preview: Can Ilia Topuria KO Max Holloway? Robert Whittaker vs. Khamzat Chimaev title eliminator?

We preview the UFC 308 card on the latest episode of “Spinning Back Clique.”

Finally! It’s UFC 308 fight week, which features a highly anticipated championship fight between [autotag]Ilia Topuria[/autotag] and [autotag]Max Holloway[/autotag].

This UFC featherweight title fight has a lot at stake given the two fighters’ trajectories, with Topuria being undefeated and coming off a wild knockout victory over Alexander Volkanovski, and Holloway already having legendary status and coming off a 2024 Knockout of the Year candidate over Justin Gaethje at UFC 300. UFC 308 also hosts several other key bouts outside the main event, including a middleweight clash between [autotag]Robert Whittaker[/autotag] and [autotag]Khamzat Chimaev[/autotag], the return of [autotag]Shara Magomedov[/autotag], and more.

Can Topuria be the first ever to knockout Holloway, or will Holloway reclaim his title? Should the winner of Whittaker vs. Chimaev get the next title shot at 185 pounds?

MMA Junkie’s Brian “Goze” Garcia, Dan Tom, Mike Bohn, Danny Segura, and host “Gorgeous” George preview the upcoming UFC pay-per-view this Saturday in Abu Dhabi.

Shara Magomedov inspired by Michael Bisping winning UFC title with one eye: ‘He set an example for me’

Wanting to be UFC champion, Shara Magomedov has taken plenty of inspiration from Michael Bisping.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Shara Magomedov[/autotag] sees a path to a UFC title thanks to [autotag]Michael Bisping[/autotag].

Magomedov (14-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC), a rising UFC middleweight, has taken a lot of inspiration from Bisping, who won a UFC title while fighting with basically one eye. Magomedov, who also lives with vision impairment, has proof that such a thing can be done thanks to Bisping and hopes to follow his footsteps.

“When it comes to Bisping, yeah, he’s a motivation because he’s somebody who went down this path already,” Magomedov said at the UFC 308 media day on Wednesday. “He laid down the path, and he set an example for me. It’s much easier to follow somebody’s path as opposed to wander around in the dark. He’s a motivation for me and other people. He said anything is possible, not to let your hands down, and keep on going forward and keep on chasing your dream.”

Magomedov returns to the cage this Saturday in the opening bout of the UFC 308 pay-per-view – which goes down at Etihad Arena. Magomedov has trained and sparred with Petrosyan (9-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) in the past.

He feels comfortable fighting with one eye and in no way is concerned that Petrosyan, or any of his future opponents, will try to take advantage of his limited vision.

“I think it’s a little different because I have 19 fights in my career, and every opponent has tried to take advantage of that, and it didn’t go their way,”

Magomedov called out Nick Diaz after defeating Michal Oleksiejczuk in a Fight of the Night battle at UFC on ABC 7 in August. Meanwhile, Petrosyan is coming off a first-round submission loss to Rodolfo Vieira in February. Prior to that, he scored back-to-back wins over A.J. Dobson and Christian Leroy Duncan.

Shara Magomedov vs. Michal Oleksiejczuk prediction, pick, start time, odds for UFC on ABC 7

Make no mistake: This is a showcase spot for Shara Magomedov courtesy of the UFC matchmakers.

Shara Magomedov vs. Michal Oleksiejczuk UFC on ABC 7 preview

Undefeated Magomedov (13-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has a chance to make a statement in a co-headlining spot after winning his first two UFC appearances. “Bullet” defeated Bruno Silva by unanimous decision last October before coming back to finish Antonio Trócoli in June. … leksiejczuk (19-8 MMA, 7-6 UFC) enters the fight on back-to-back losses and defeats in three of his past four.

Shara Magomedov vs. Michal Oleksiejczuk UFC on ABC 7 expert pick, prediction

Despite being more known for his dubious actions outside the cage than inside of it, Magomedov is being rewarded with a co-main event slot in just his third UFC showing. Stepping up for the matchmakers on the other side of what is an obvious showcase spot is Oleksiejczuk.

Oleksiejczuk is a staple action fighter for the promotion, but the Pole has been on a clear skid, losing 3 of his last 4 fights.

Although Oleksiejczuk’s southpaw pressure could produce some real problems for the one-and-done kicking stylings of Magomedov, I can’t help but suspect that “Shara Bullet” is being set up to succeed in this spot.

So, between seeing people like Paddy Pimblett pull through last week to all the suspect behavior during the UFC’s prior show in the Middle East, I’ll be following suit this Saturday and sticking with the locally connected hyped product to come up large.

The pick is Magomedov by first-round knockout.

Shara Magomedov vs. Michal Oleksiejczuk UFC on ABC 7 odds

The oddsmakers and the public continue to grow tumescent over the fighter who looks like he’s a villain straight out of a James Bond film, listing Magomedov -265 and Oleksiejczuk +210 via FanDuel.

Shara Magomedov vs. Michal Oleksiejczuk UFC on ABC 7 start time, how to watch

Magomedov and Oleksiejczuk are expected to walk out to the cage at approximately 5 p.m. ET. The fight will air on ABC and stream on ESPN+.

Michal Oleksiejczuk before UFC on ABC 7: Shara Magomedov a great kickboxer, but my boxing better

Michal Oleksiejczuk is happy to test his standup against Shara Magomedov’s at UFC on ABC 7.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Michal Oleksiejczuk[/autotag] is happy to test his standup against [autotag]Shara Magomedov[/autotag]’s.

Oleksiejczuk (19-8 MMA, 17-6 UFC) takes on Magomedov (13-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC on ABC 7 (ABC, ESPN2, ESPN+) co-main event at Etihad Arena in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. Both fighters are statistically proven knockout artists, and despite being on a two-fight losing skid, Oleksiejczuk doesn’t plan on backing down from the striking exchanges with Magomedov.

“Shara is a great kickboxer, but I think that my boxing is better than Shara,” Oleksiejczuk told reporters, including MMA Junkie, at UFC on ABC 7 media day.

Oleksiejczuk will also get an opportunity to bounce highly touted Magomedov out of the ranks of the unbeaten.

“This is a very good fight for me because Shara is a very popular fighter, and this fight will be very exciting for me, for fans, and I am very happy,” Oleksiejczuk said. “I want to fight standing. Standing is my best side, and I like to make pressure, I like hard punches, and I want to knock out my opponent.”

Oleksiejczuk’s past few fights have been fan friendly, coming against the likes of Kevin Holland and Michel Pereira. He is happy to draw another popular name in the division.

“I want to fight with the best fighters in the middleweight division in the UFC,” Oleksiejczuk said. “Shara is an exciting fighter, and he’s very popular and that’s all. I like this fight.”

‘Opening new doors’: Rising UFC star Shara Magomedov crafted image for Hollywood, fight success

Rising UFC star Shara Magomedov is a promoter’s dream – and apparently a Hollywood director’s, too.

Take one look at [autotag]Shara Magomedov[/autotag], and you’ll see he’s one of the most unique characters in MMA – a combat sport full of some of the most interesting people on Earth.

Just two fights into his UFC tenure, Magomedov (13-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has already caught the attention of fight fans around the world. He returns Saturday at UFC on ABC 7 in his highest-profile fight to date: his first promotional co-main event vs. Michal Oleksiejczuk (19-8 MMA, 7-6 UFC).

Ahead of this fight, Magomedov flew to Hollywood to feature in an unannounced film project. He spent seven days there, eagerly awaiting the next fight call. He even used live movie props to craft a fighter callout video.

“It doesn’t matter where I’m at or what I’m doing,” Magomedov told MMA Junkie and other reporters Thursday at a pre-fight news conference in Abu Dhabi. “I’m always thinking about the fights. This is my No. 1 goal about everything. Even when I was on set, this is the one thing I think about. I was waiting for the phone to ring. I was waiting for Ali Abdelaziz, my manager, to call me. Even at one point, I took the iguana that was being used on set, and I called out Kevin Holland with it.

“So I always think about the fights. This is my No. 1 goal, no matter what I do. This is what I eat, live, and breathe. I’m concentrating on fights moving forward. First, I would like to become the people’s champ. Then obviously the goal is to be crowned champ, get the gold, and get the main bounty, which is the belt.”

Whether it’s his resemblance to a pirate, his kick-heavy fighting style, or something else, Magomedov has made himself a promoter’s dream – and apparently a director’s, too.

“This is just the way I’ve chosen myself and ever since I’ve chosen this way, it was a path that I was on,” Magomedov said. “You can take this path, another path opens up. You take another path and the next path. So no, this is something we do ourselves. We improvise. We have this image and we’re going to keep moving with it. This is not a PR manager that’s working for us. We don’t have one like that. It’s just something that we’re moving along with our own story and we’re going to keep opening new doors.”

Extracurriculars aside, fighting is paramount for “Shara Bullet.” Through two UFC fights, he thinks he’s showed the world only a fraction of what he’s capable of. He hopes Saturday’s performance is more reflective of his entire skill set and abilities.

“I don’t I’ve showed even half of my potential,” Magomedov said. “I’ve have difficulties preparing for my first two fights. There hasn’t been enough time to prepare fully. But now with the opportunities the UFC has been given me, I’ve been able to prepare better, to be in better shape, and I’m sure I’m going to show exciting fights. I’m going to make sure I show exciting wins going forward.”

Nick Diaz vs. Vicente Luque off UFC Abu Dhabi due to ‘travel issue’; Shara Bullet added as co-main

Nick Diaz’s return to the UFC is on hold for now.

UFC fans will have to wait a bit longer to see [autotag]Nick Diaz[/autotag] back in the cage.

Diaz (26-10 MMA, 7-7 UFC) vs. [autotag]Vicente Luque[/autotag] (22-10-1 MMA, 15-6 UFC) has been removed from the upcoming UFC on ABC 7 in Abu Dhabi due to a “travel issue,” the promotion announced Saturday during the UFC on ESPN 60 broadcast.

UFC commentator Brendan Fitzgerald said the promotion will reschedule the fight for later in the summer, though he did not specify a date. The travel issue was with Diaz, not Luque.

The welterweight bout was scheduled to be the card’s co-main event. The promotion has replaced it with a new booking: [autotag]Shara Magomedov[/autotag] (13-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) vs. [autotag]Michael Oleksiejczuk[/autotag] (19-8 MMA, 7-6 UFC).

Had the bout happened, it would’ve been the first for Diaz since September 2021 when he lost by third-round TKO to Robbie Lawler. That fight was Diaz’s first in four years, since a no contest vs. Anderson Silva.

[lawrence-related id=2757026,2757001]

Luque would’ve looked to bounce back from a March loss to Joaquin Buckley. The defeat was his third in his most recent four fights.

Two fighters’ losses are two fighters’ gains, however. A rising star, Magomedov gets his biggest spot to date against the always gritty Oleksiejczuk.

Magomedov competed in June when he defeated Antonio Trocoli by third-round TKO. The victory moved him to 2-0 in the UFC, the banner under which he successfully debuted vs. Bruno Silva in October.

Oleksiejczuk could be fighting for his UFC career in this bout. Though his fights have been consistently exciting, the results have varied. Oleksiejczuk is 1-3 in his most recent four, including a submission loss to Kevin Holland in June.

UFC’s Shara Magomedov explains callout of Kevin Holland: ‘It’s going to be fireworks’

Shara Magomedov called out veteran Kevin Holland. Here’s why.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Shara Magomedov[/autotag] wants a piece of [autotag]Kevin Holland[/autotag].

The rising middleweight issued a callout to Holland earlier this week, but now has opened up about his reasons. Magomedov (13-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) believes he can put on a memorable bout for the fan base, and that’s something that’s important to him.

“He’s a very exciting fighter,” Magomedov told reporters on the red carpet of the UFC Hall of Fame on Thursday. “I used to watch him before I was in the UFC, so I like his style and if we clash, I think it’s going to be fireworks and that’s the only thing I want to give to the fans, fireworks.”

Magomedov competed last week, defeating Antonio Trocoli on the main card of UFC on ABC 6 at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Although Magomedov is only two fights into his UFC career, the Russian fighter is quickly becoming a popular name in the promotion. So far, his experience in the UFC has been everything he wished for.

“Just about a year ago, it was my dream to just come to the U.S. and see all these beautiful cities,” Magomedov said. “Now, I’m not only in the UFC, but I’m 2-0 in the UFC with a win in the historic event where UFC went to Saudi Arabia. My dream was to just enter the octagon, and now I’m fighting in the octagon, and I’m very grateful, very happy.”
