Broncos make two changes to practice squad

Danny Etling had a short tenure on the Broncos’ practice squad.

Denver Broncos general manager George Paton continues to tinker with the bottom of the team’s roster.

Denver released offensive guard Shaq Calhoun and quarterback Danny Etling from the practice squad on Tuesday, the team announced.

Calhoun was signed last month when the team needed more depth at guard because of multiple injuries at the position. Etling was signed just last weekend to provide emergency QB depth while Drew Lock was in COVID-19 protocol.

Lock is expected to return this week and the Broncos will once again have three quarterbacks: Teddy Bridgewater, Brett Rypien and Lock.

Denver placed outside linebacker Pita Taumoepenu on the practice squad/COVID-19 list and cornerback Duke Dawson on the practice squad/injured list last week. The Broncos clearing two spots on the practice squad by cutting Calhoun and Etling might be a sign that Taumoepenu and Dawson are close to returning.

The Broncos currently have three open spots on the practice squad.

Cardinals sign 4 to practice squad, including CB Quinton Dunbar, OL Michal Menet

They made a flurry of moves on the practice squad after three players have been signed to the active roster in the last week. 7th-round pick Michael Menet returns.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a few roster moves dealing with the 53-man roster, including the signing of cornerback Antonio Hamilton from the practice squad to the 53-man squad. With that move and the signing of two offensive linemen from the practice squad to the active roster over the weekend, the Cardinals had a few vacancies on their practice squad.

They announced four player signings to the unit and the release of one.

They released cornerback Mazzi Wilkins, whom they added just last week.

They added three offensive linemen and a veteran cornerback. The players they added are below.

2 more Cardinals land on COVID list

OL Shaq Calhoun and WR Rico Gafford are the second and third players to land on the Cardinals’ COVID list in training camp.

The Arizona Cardinals now have three players on the COVID-19 reserve as training camp begins. They placed undrafted rookie cornerback Lorenzo Burns on it recently and two more landed there on Wednesday.

The NFL transaction list on Wednesday showed the Cardinals placed offensive lineman Shaq Calhoun and receiver Rico Gafford on the list.

There were 24 placed on the COVID list leaguewide on Wednesday. 22 were the result of positive tests.

If both Gafford and Calhoun have been fully vaccinated, the only reason they would be placed on the list would be a positive test. Those who are not fully vaccinated are still tested daily can land on the list when there is high-risk, close contact with someone who tests positive.

As of recently, the Cardinals were among the teams with the lowest vaccination rates in the league. However, that could be improving. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury said Tuesday they were making progress with vaccinations and that things were “moving in the right direction.”

The Cardinals now have two roster spots open to add to the offseason roster.

Which 2019 Dolphins UDFA will play the most snaps in 2020?

Which 2019 Dolphins UDFA will play the most snaps in 2020?

The Miami Dolphins’ undrafted free agent haul of 2019 provided the team with significant contributions — a credit to the team’s scouting department and front office but also an indictment of the readily available talent on the team’s roster come the start of the season. It required a number of separate variables to allow some of Miami’s UDFAs to crack the starting lineup, and getting into the rotation in 2020 should prove to be a tougher test.

So which of Miami’s three prominent UDFA contributors from 2019 is most likely to take the biggest share of snaps in 2020?

Preston Williams, Wide Receiver

2019 snaps: 450

Williams will have a starting wide receiver role waiting for him in 2020 — once, of course, he’s healed from the 2019 ACL tear that ended his season at the halfway point. Williams’ recovery will be a big story to watch, as the Dolphins did not address their wide receiver group with any other additions this offseason. Could Williams be ready to rumble by Week 1? Or will he start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list and miss action as he continues his rehab?

Nik Needham, Cornerback

2019 snaps: 780

Needham steadily built upon his performance each week and by the end of the year was a scrappy, competitive cornerback who was playing as well as any corner on the roster. But then the team signed Byron Jones, drafted Noah Igbinoghene in the 1st-round and got Xavien Howard back from injury this offseason. That spells a looming set of challenges for Needham to play such a high workload again in 2020.

Shaq Calhoun, Offensive Guard

2019 snaps: 505

Calhoun started almost out of necessity for the Dolphins early on, logging 7 starts for the team. But Calhoun’s play was a tough watch and Miami apparently didn’t see a lot to get excited about — the team added nearly two new interior offensive lines to the roster this offseason between free agents Ereck Flowers and Ted Karras, 2020 UDFA Donell Stanley and the drafting of Solomon Kindley and Robert Hunt, who may also play tackle.

Final Verdict

If we had to guess, Shaq Calhoun does not make the Dolphins’ active roster in 2020. And while it a bit risky to bet on the recovery of a knee injury from late October of last year, we ultimately think Preston Williams will command the most prominent role for the Dolphins this season. As a result, we’re banking on him taking more snaps this season than Needham, who is the team’s 4th best option (in a best case scenario that ignores safeties Eric Rowe and Bobby McCain) at cornerback.
