WATCH: Jocelyn Alo describes her love and dedication to the game in Whistle’s ‘No Days Off’

In Whistle’s web series “No Days Off” Jocelyn Alo described the feeling of setting the home run record and her love and dedication for the game.

With another incredible season for the Oklahoma Sooners, Jocelyn Alo earned her second consecutive USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. She’s the fifth player to win the award in consecutive seasons, and, heading into the Women’s College World Series, Alo’s put together a career that has her in consideration as one of the best of all time.

But she hasn’t gotten there through sheer talent, though she’s incredibly talented and has been from a young age. Alo has put in the work to become the best player in softball.

In the web series No Days Off from Whistle, Alo shared what sets her apart as a hitter is the reps she put in as a kid with her dad and the film work she does on her opponents and on herself.

“When I was 4 years old, I would ask my dad to take me to go hit, and we would hit 1,000 balls every night just for fun.”

Former teammate and now coach Sooners assistant Shannon Saile described Alo as “extremely dedicated and confident in the work she puts in.”

One of the high points in Alo’s career was breaking the NCAA’s all-time home run record.

“I didn’t hear the crowd whenever I did break the record. I was just super locked into the moment,” Alo shared in the web series. “Next thing I know, my coach is doing our little thing at third and then I’m being mobbed at home plate. And as I see my dad up in the stands, and I’m just saying how much I love him. Definitely lots of good feelings.”

Coming into the season with the home run record in striking distance and Oklahoma poised to contend for another national championship would put pressure on anyone. But Alo said she tries to “stay within herself and not make the moment too big.”

Sooners head coach Patty Gasso told her “pressure is privilege.” And it’s that relationship with Gasso that helped Alo thrive the last couple of seasons.

“Playing for a coach like Patty Gasso is everything I’ve ever wanted in a coach and a whole lot more,” Alo shared about her Hall of Fame coach. “To play under a woman, a boss lady, was something different for me. She has helped me to grow as a person, as a player, and more importantly as a woman.”

In the episode, Alo shared she plans to play professionally after she was selected first in the inaugural WFP collegiate draft. And she announced she’ll be playing for Team USA in the 2028 Olympic games.

Oklahoma Sooners are unanimous No. 1 in DI softball’s 2022 preseason top 25

The staff over at DI Softball voted the Oklahoma Sooners unanimous No. 1 in the 2022 preseason rankings.

Just as they did at the plate several times during the 2021 season, the Oklahoma Sooners are looking to go back-to-back heading into 2022. Instead of homers though, they’re looking to collect back-to-back national championships.

Returning a roster that made run rules the standard in 2021, the Sooners look primed to make another run at the 2022 College World Series and national championship.

DI Softball recently released its preseason rankings, and the Oklahoma Sooners were named the unanimous No. 1 heading into the 2022 season.

Patty Gasso and the Oklahoma Sooners return the key components to their dominant offense from 2021: Jocelyn Alo, Tiare Jennings, Jayda Coleman and emotional sparkplug Mackenzie Donihoo.

Oklahoma will have to replace Giselle Juarez and Shannon Saile, the key pitchers from the 2021 College World Series. Both have graduated, and Saile has moved into a graduate assistant role. Nicole May, who was great for the Sooners at times in 2021, will be expected to take on a larger role this season.

Oklahoma opens its season Feb. 10 in California against UC Santa Barbara. The Sooners will take part in several tournaments to start the season. Traveling to southern California, Houston and back to California before they host their home opener against Minnesota on March 7 at Marita Hynes Field. After that one-off at home, Jocelyn Alo will lead the Oklahoma Sooners to the power hitters’ home state of Hawaii for the Rainbow Wahine Classic. The team returns to Oklahoma City for the Hall of Fame Classic on March 18. Big 12 plays opens against Baylor on March 25.

Patty Gasso expects Giselle Juarez, Nicole Mendes and Shannon Saile back for 2021 season

Oklahoma softball head coach Patty Gasso said she expected Giselle Juarez, Nicole Mendes and Shannon Saile back for the 2021 season.

Oklahoma softball head coach Patty Gasso said she expected Giselle Juarez, Nicole Mendes, and Shannon Saile back for the 2021 season in light of the 2020 season’s cancellation.

After the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of all Division I and Division II spring sports, the NCAA announced on Friday that all Division I student-athletes who participated in the spring season will receive an extra year of eligibility.

“I expect the three seniors back,” Gasso said at her teleconference on Monday.

Gasso explained that Juarez and Mendes, who had already missed significant time in the 2020 season, could receive medical redshirts. Juarez was limited to just 6.2 innings through the Sooners 24 games, and Mendes was just getting back in the swing of things with six at-bats in the last six games.

Saile had thrown more pitches than any other Sooner before the season’s cancellation. She led Oklahoma in innings pitched and strikeouts, and led the Sooners to an 8-3 record when in the circle,  allowing just three runs in her last 20 innings pitched.

Oklahoma posted a 20-4 record before their season ended.

Oklahoma softball drops to No. 6 in USA TODAY Coaches Poll

Oklahoma softball dropped one spot to No. 6 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll after losing their fourth game of the year over the weekend.

Oklahoma softball dropped one spot to No. 6 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll after losing their fourth game of the year over the weekend.

The Sooners won the Courtyard Marriott Tournament over the weekend, finishing 4-1 with wins over Northwestern, Abilene Christian and North Texas.

Oklahoma (15-4) is continuing to persevere through youth and injury, but lost Saturday’s early matchup against North Texas 4-3. The loss allowed Arizona (17-3) , who was previously No. 7, to vault over the Sooners to No. 4. Fifth-ranked LSU dropped one spot. Defending champions UCLA hold the top spot, followed by Washington, who beat Oklahoma 12-2 in late February.

Head coach Patty Gasso will be the first to tell you the Sooners aren’t playing their best ball, but there are positives, starting with the fact Oklahoma has already bested the team that jumped them: Arizona.

When asked when her team should be hitting their stride, Patty Gasso said it would take some time. “I think normally by the time we start Big 12 play.. Sometimes we’re not even ready by then. But as long we get there I’m okay.” she said.

In mid-February, Oklahoma sealed a 6-4 come-from-behind win over the Wildcats by scoring two runs in the top of the 10th inning. The Sooners’ rotation of Macy McAdoo, Olivia Rains and Shannon Saile combined for only three strikeouts.

Oklahoma isn’t where they want to be, but there’s plenty of room for improvement.

The Sooners’ next matchup is Wednesday, March 4 against Wichita State at 6 p.m. in Norman.

On Friday the Sooners earned their largest win of the season with a 10-3 victory over Long Beach State. Much like their opener, true freshman Kinzie Hansen had another solid outing, earning two RBI’s in the first inning to give the Sooners an early lead. From there, Oklahoma added three more runs in the second inning and coasted to a 7-point win.

Oklahoma picked up a pair of close wins on Saturday with a 5-2 win over George Washington University and a 3-1 win over BYU.

Oklahoma trailed 2-1 after the third inning, but scored four runs in the fourth inning to power past GW. Sophomore Grace Green had two hits and two RBI’s.

In their second game on Saturday, the Sooners finally broke out All-American pitcher Giselle Juarez. Saile started five innings in the circle before Juarez entered in relief, allowing one run and striking out three.
