Report: Kentucky’s Shaedon Sharpe eligible to enter 2022 NBA draft

Sharpe, who just committed to Kentucky in September, is now reportedly eligible to enter the 2022 NBA draft.

Kentucky Wildcats commit Shaedon Sharpe, the No. 1 recruit in the high school class of 2022, is reportedly eligible to enter the 2022 NBA draft, according to Jonathan Givony of ESPN.

Sharpe announced in September his commitment to Kentucky prior to his senior season at Dream City Christian in Glendale, Arizona. Instead of playing his senior year, he opted to graduate high school prior to the season after having the necessary credits to do so.

Because Sharpe will turn 19 in May, and will be one NBA season removed from graduating high school, he will be eligible to declare as an early-entry candidate in the upcoming draft. However, he has yet to formalize those plans.

Sharpe opted to enroll at Kentucky this month and has practiced with the team. He has not played yet but has been seen on the Wildcats’ bench at games. The team could opt to use him soon as the Wildcats gear up for the second half of the season.

The five-star prospect, who was born in Ontario, averaged 21.4 points, six rebounds and three assists last season as a junior. He helped Canada earn the silver medal in the 2019 FIBA U16 Americas Championship, averaging 13 points per game.

With Sharpe eligible to be drafted this season, the 6-foot-6 guard could emerge as a top-five pick if he chooses to leave school. He is an athletic player that can score from all over the floor and is active on defense, traits that translate well to the next level.

Top 2022 recruit Shaedon Sharpe to enroll at Kentucky in January

Shaedon Sharpe, the top-ranked high school basketball player in the country, is enrolling early at the University of Kentucky.

Shaedon Sharpe, the top-ranked high school basketball player in the country, is enrolling early at the University of Kentucky and redshirting for the second semester.

“I’m going to enroll in January,” Sharpe said in an interview with Sports Illustrated. “I’m going to report down there after Christmas. I’m going to redshirt. I just want to get a head start on college basketball and train with older, bigger, stronger and better players.”

Sharpe’s jump to the college ranks earlier than expected was rumored in October and does not come as much of a surprise with more prospects leaving high school early than ever before. Jalen Duren and Emoni Bates, the original top-two recruits in the class of 2022, reclassified to the class of 2021 during the summer to play at Memphis this season.

“I never cared about being No. 1 or anything like that,” Sharpe said. “I just worked hard and that came, but my goals have always been about the NBA and being the best player that I can be at that level. That’s it.”

Sharpe’s enrollment for the spring semester is not a first for Kentucky, either. Hamidou Diallo committed to Kentucky in Jan. 2017, enrolled later that month and redshirted for the rest of the season. He entered his name into the NBA draft and ultimately never played a game for John Calipari.

Sharpe, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Glendale (Ariz.) Dream City Christian has been compared to Zach LaVine and will have a chance to make an instant impact when he takes the court at the next level.

“A product of Canada, Sharpe is an explosive athlete with a nose for the rim,” 247Sports’ Eric Bossi said. “He loves to catch, face and is tough to stop because of an electric first step and his ability to get downhill, into the lane and then finish around the rim. Over the last year, Sharpe has improved tremendously as a ball-handler, pull-up jump shooter and shot maker from beyond the three-point line.

“The improved ball-handling has allowed him to be much more creative as a scorer and playmaker for others. Sharpe has long arms, moves well laterally and has all of the tools to develop into a player who is just as disruptive on the defensive end of the floor as he is on offense.”

Top 2022 recruit Shaedon Sharpe ‘strongly considering’ enrolling early at Kentucky

Top 2022 recruit Shaedon Sharpe is “strongly considering” enrolling early at Kentucky for the second semester, according to 247Sports.

The top high school basketball recruit in the class of 2022 is reportedly considering following the lead of Emoni Bates and Jalen Duren and jumping to the college ranks earlier than originally expected.

Glendale (Ariz.) Dream City Christian shooting guard Shaedon Sharpe is “strongly considering” enrolling early at Kentucky for the second semester, according to 247Sports. Sharpe would not play for the Wildcats this upcoming season, much like Hamidou Diallo when he left Putnam Science Academy early to join Kentucky midway through the 2016-2017 season.

“Shaedon Sharpe’s development is well ahead of schedule, as a result, he is considering enrolling earlier than expected at the University of Kentucky,” 247Sports’ Travis Branham wrote.

Enrolling early would allow Sharpe to continue his accelerated development under the guidance of John Calipari and his coaching staff. Sharpe would not factor into Kentucky’s on-court plans during the 2021-22 college basketball season, but his time spent practicing with the team during the spring semester would likely have him ready to claim a spot in the starting lineup in 2022-23.

Sharpe’s potential early enrollment also puts him one step closer to the NBA draft. Diallo never played a game at Kentucky, instead using his time with the program to develop and jump straight to the professional ranks. Diallo was ultimately selected in the second round of the 2018 draft.

A final decision on Sharpe’s future has yet to be made, but one could come soon, according to Branham.

Kentucky lands five-star Oak Hill forward Chris Livingston

Five-star forward Chris Livingston has committed to Kentucky.

Kentucky hit a home run with another big name in the class of 2022 on Wednesday night, as five-star Oak Hill Academy (Va.) forward Chris Livingston committed to the Wildcats.

Livingston picked Kentucky over Georgetown, Kansas, Memphis and Tennessee State, among others. Memphis was thought to be gaining momentum to land Livingston after the additions of Emoni Bates and Jalen Duren, but the Tigers eventually fell out of the race once Kentucky established itself as the heavy favorite.

Livingston is the second five-star recruit from the class of 2022 to commit to Kentucky in September. Dream City Christian (Ariz.) shooting guard Shaedon Sharpe, the No. 1 recruit in the class after Bates and Duren reclassified, committed to the Wildcats on Sept. 7.

Livingston’s commitment gives Kentucky three five-star recruits in its 2022 recruiting class, as Montverde Academy’s Skyy Clark is the No. 17 prospect in the class.

“Tremendous physical build for a wing,” 247Sports’ Jerry Meyer wrote in his scouting report of Livingston. “Has explosive athleticism and can make plays in traffic. Loves to attack the rim. Has a powerful spin move to finish off drives.

“Shoots it well enough from deep but an area for improvement. Handles well in space but needs to tighten and refine his handle. Can deliver a pass on the move. Active player who comes up with balls off the glass and the floor. Has great potential as a multi-positional defender.”

2022 No. 1 recruit Shaedon Sharpe commits to play at Kentucky

The commitment of Sharpe will give Wildcats head coach John Calipari his first No. 1 recruit since Skal Labissiere in 2015.

Shaedon Sharpe, the No. 1 recruit in the high school class of 2022, announced on Tuesday he has committed to play at the University of Kentucky.

The commitment of Sharpe will give Wildcats head coach John Calipari his first top-ranked recruit since Skal Labissiere in 2015. Sharpe chose Kentucky over Arizona, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas among others.

He was also said to be considering the NBA G League Ignite.

Sharpe, who was born in Ontario, averaged 21.4 points, six rebounds and three assists last season as a junior at Dream City Christian in Glendale, Arizona. He helped Canada earn the silver medal in the 2019 FIBA U16 Americas Championship, averaging 13 points per game.

The Wildcats are also thought to be in the running to land other top high school prospects in 2022, such as Dereck Lively II, Cason Wallace and Adem Bona. Sharpe committing to Kentucky could help the program land those recruits, as well.

The program has already received a commitment from Skyy Clark.

Sharpe cited the player development program at Kentucky as a major driving force in joining the Wildcats as Calipari has helped send dozens to the NBA. Now, he could be the next in line to make a similar jump from Lexington to the league.
