ESPN: Shaedon Sharpe’s camp has a preferred destination in NBA draft

Shaedon Sharpe, eligible for the NBA draft out of high school, will join the league next week. ESPN reported the team that tops his camp’s wish list.

In a week, Shaedon Sharpe will be the latest player to hear his name called in the NBA draft without playing post-high-school basketball. Sharpe, a 19-year-old who is a year past his high school graduation date, is eligible for the draft despite originally enrolling to be a fifth-year senior at Dream City Christian (Glendale, Ariz.) before reclassifying and enrolling early at Kentucky, where he attended but did not play basketball this season.

The former No. 1 player in the class of 2022, Sharpe is projected to be a lottery pick in the 2022 draft.

According to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, Sharpe’s camp wants the guard to be drafted to a team that can “take a long-term view in steering him to an advantageous development situation in which he can maximize his significant potential and become an All-Star.”

Sharpe seems likely to go in the 6-12 range, which, in order, is the Indiana Pacers, Portland Trail Blazers, New Orleans Pelicans, San Antonio Spurs, Washington Wizards, New York Knicks and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Givony said the Thunder are “at the top of their list.” OKC is receiving a visit from the guard and has “studied him more closely than any team in the NBA,” according to the ESPN reporter.

The Thunder won’t take him at No. 2, but they have the means to move up from their No. 12 pick to secure him if they think he can live up to his potential. Loaded with future draft picks and tradable contracts, general manager Sam Presti could fulfill the reported wishes of Sharpe’s camp.

Thunder aggressively trying to trade up in 2022 NBA draft for Shaedon Sharpe, Jaden Ivey, per ESPN

Would you trade Lu Dort if it meant getting one of Shaedon Sharpe or Jaden Ivey?

In his latest mock draft, ESPN draft expert Jonathan Givony reported that the Oklahoma City Thunder are aggressively trying to move up from No. 12 in the 2022 NBA draft in hope of being able to snag someone like Shaedon Sharpe or Jaden Ivey.

“The Thunder are said to be aggressively pursuing trade conversations for this pick, seeking to package it with future assets or existing OKC players in order to move into the mid-lottery, with players including Jaden Ivey and Shaedon Sharpe believed to be among the potential prospects they covet.”

In the same article, Givony has the Sacramento Kings taking Ivey fourth overall but adds that the Kings are not Ivey’s preferred destination. Givony then listed several teams who are interested in moving up to No. 4 with the Thunder being one of them.

Rival teams think a trade package that centers around Lu Dort could potentially entice the Kings to accept a deal as they are looking to contend for the playoffs this upcoming season.

Shaedon Sharpe worked out with the Thunder in pre-draft visit, per NBA insider

Even though he’s been in OKC, this is the first time it’s been reported Shaedon Sharpe worked out for the Thunder.

Sports Illustrated’s Brett Siegel confirmed in his latest 2022 NBA mock draft that the Oklahoma City Thunder have worked out former Kentucky guard Shaedon Sharpe in a pre-draft week.

“Already having Chet Holmgren, Jabari Smith Jr. or Paolo Banchero at this point, the Thunder and GM Sam Presti can look to get aggressive with this 12th overall selection and really dig in on their philosophy of building for the future.

No player fits this mindset better than Shaedon Sharpe and him still being on the board here would be a miracle situation for the Thunder, as Sharpe is someone that the team really liked when they brought him in for a pre-draft workout recently. While he is still a big unknown given that he is making the jump from high school to the NBA without playing a single minute of collegiate basketball, Sharpe has the tools to be an elite-level scorer in time.”

It seems like this is the week of Sharpe as ESPN reported this past Saturday that his camp has the Thunder at the top of his list for preferred destinations. It was then picked up on Twitter on Sunday that Sharpe was recently in an Oklahoma City gym working out via a June 1 TikTok.

ESPN also reported that Sharpe is the likeliest of the highly-touted prospects to fall to 12th overall. Even if that’s the case, if the Thunder really like Sharpe, then they should not risk losing him if he’s still there after the first five picks.

Overpaying to move up in the draft to select someone the Thunder really like is one of the biggest reasons as to why the team has been hoarding picks over the last couple of seasons. If the Thunder think Sharpe is that guy, then they should not hesitate to overpay in draft picks to get him.

Shaedon Sharpe posted TikTok video that reveals he worked out in Oklahoma City

@ThunderFocus was able to discover the video on Shaedon Sharpe’s TikTok account, which he posted on June 1.

It appears that former Kentucky guard Shaedon Sharpe was recently in Oklahoma City for workouts — though it’s not specified that he was also there to officially workout for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Twitter user Thunder Focus discovered on Sharpe’s TikTok account that he was recently in an Oklahoma City gym called “Hoop House,” which is owned by OU alumni Blake Griffin’s Team Griffin.

Daily Thunder’s Brandon Rahbar was able to confirm the location as well.

While the video is just now reaching Twitter, it was uploaded on TikTok on June 1.

This comes a day after ESPN’s Jonathan Givony revealed in his 2021 NBA draft article over the Thunder that Sharpe has the team at the top of his list in terms of preferred draft destination. The Thunder will not take Sharpe at second overall, but if he’s available between the 6-12 range, then a potential trade up is possible.

Rumor: Thunder showing strong interest in Shaedon Sharpe

Sharpe is reportedly expected to work out with the Thunder soon ahead of the draft on June 23.

Former Kentucky guard Shaedon Sharpe has received plenty of interest from teams ahead of the NBA draft, and the Oklahoma City Thunder are reportedly among those included in that group.

Sharpe, the No. 3 recruit in the high school class of 2022, had a brief stop in Lexington with the Wildcats after enrolling at the university in January. He never suited up for head coach John Calipari and ultimately opted to leave for the draft.

The 19-year-old is still projected to be a lottery pick despite not playing last season. He has worked out with 10 teams to this point with a visit to Oklahoma City to come. In fact, the Thunder have been heavily involved in scouting Sharpe, according to Jonathan Givony of ESPN.

Sharpe is conducting competitive 3-on-3 workouts for most, but not all of the teams picking in the top 10, with his floor likely being (No. 12) for the Thunder, who will be getting a visit and have studied him more closely than any team in the NBA.

Though there is still much unknown about Sharpe after sitting out last season, teams are still intrigued with his potential. He is highly touted for his athleticism and ability to defend with a 7-foot wingspan and figures to benefit in a situation with development opportunities.

Sharpe reportedly prefers to land with a team like the Thunder, who are still rebuilding and would have minutes available to develop on the court. They have a young nucleus and could benefit by adding a player like Sharpe with plenty of potential and upside.

Oklahoma City enters the draft with three first-round picks and an additional selection early in the second round. The Thunder project to be a team to watch on draft night that could be active so it will be interesting to see how they approach things.

OKC’s interest in Sharpe is mutual. …

OKC’s interest in Sharpe is mutual. According to Jonathan Givony of ESPN, the Thunder “have studied him more closely than any team in the NBA” and his camp has them at the top of the wishlist for Sharpe’s potential destinations. Sharpe’s camp also doesn’t sound overly concerned with where he’s picked, preferring to take a long-term view in steering him to an advantageous development situation in which he can maximize his significant potential and become an All-Star, with the Thunder being at the top of their list.

Shaedon Sharpe would love to be drafted by the Thunder, per ESPN

If Sharpe is there after 6, should the Thunder trade up?

In his recent article detailing the perfect 2022 NBA draft for the Oklahoma City Thunder, ESPN draft expert Jonathan Givony. At the 12th spot, Givony surprisingly mentioned Kentucky guard Shaedon Sharpe being there and the Thunder taking him. The most interesting part of his analysis is the fact that Givony has heard that Sharpe welcomes being drafted to the Thunder for basketball reasons.

“Sharpe is conducting competitive 3-on-3 workouts for most, but not all of the teams picking in the top 10, with his floor likely being this spot for the Thunder, who will be getting a visit and have studied him more closely than any team in the NBA. Sharpe dropping to 12th on draft night would be surprising, but not unimaginable. Not every team picking in the 5-10 range has a great handle on what Sharpe’s game is, and not all would be willing to give him the freedom and reps he’d need to learn on the fly and make up for the experience he missed by skipping his senior year of high school, opting not to play at Kentucky and heading straight to the NBA. Sharpe’s camp also doesn’t sound overly concerned with where he’s picked, preferring to take a long-term view in steering him to an advantageous development situation in which he can maximize his significant potential and become an All-Star, with the Thunder being at the top of their list.”

Hearing that Sharpe — the biggest mystery of the draft — has the Thunder at the top of his list of preferred teams to be drafted by must be music for the fanbase’s ears. While second overall is too rich for taking Sharpe, having him available at No. 12 is way too good to pass up on. One can even argue that if Sharpe is available after No. 6, then the Thunder should give max effort in attempting to trade back up.

The 2022 NBA draft is scheduled to be held on June 23.

Projected lottery pick Shaedon Sharpe has worked out with Hornets, others

Sharpe estimated that he has worked out with approximately 10 teams to this point, including the Hornets.

Former Kentucky guard Shaedon Sharpe on Friday participated in an individual draft workout with the Charlotte Hornets, the team announced.

Sharpe, the No. 3 recruit in the high school class of 2022, had a brief stop in Lexington with the Wildcats after enrolling at the university in January. He never suited up for head coach John Calipari and ultimately opted to leave for the draft.

Despite not playing at Kentucky, Sharpe is widely projected to be a lottery pick on June 23. He did not participate in the draft combine last month but is an intriguing option for teams given his athleticism and ability to defend with a 7-foot wingspan.

[mm-video type=video id=01g54v70rqcbg74tr11v playlist_id=01f09kz5ecxq9bp57b player_id=01f1jxkahtwnvzepyp image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g54v70rqcbg74tr11v/01g54v70rqcbg74tr11v-f85d341354d70230d5ec5aeff1af40f6.jpg]

Sharpe, who was born in Canada, averaged 21.4 points, six rebounds and three assists last year at Dream City Christian in Glendale, Arizona. He also helped Canada earn the silver medal in the 2019 FIBA U16 Americas Championship, averaging 13 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

The 19-year-old estimated that he has worked out with approximately 10 teams to this point, including the Hornets, who have picks 13 and 15. He is also reportedly scheduled to meet with the New Orleans Pelicans next week and will likely have other workouts ahead of the draft.

The potential to become a lottery pick likely persuaded Sharpe to leave Kentucky for the draft. There is still much unknown about him but teams are certainly still intrigued with his ability and potential.
