Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes had been perfect during his NFL career through the month of September, but Sunday night’s tilt with the Baltimore Ravens changed all of that.
Prior to Sunday, Mahomes had led the Chiefs to an 11-0 record in the month of September spanning the last four seasons, including this year’s Week 1 game against the Cleveland Browns. He’d been absolutely perfect in all 11 games too, throwing 3,637 passing yards, 35 touchdowns and no interceptions.
If you add in most of the first three-quarters of the game tonight, Mahomes had thrown an impressive 38 touchdowns and no interceptions. Right at the end of the third quarter in Baltimore, however, Mahomes threw the most unfortunate interception.
It was third-and-12 for the Chiefs, and the Ravens sent a unique delayed blitz. Mahomes tried to step up to avoid pressure and ended up with a defender draped on his back. He launched the football in the direction of Travis Kelce as he fell to the ground, but couldn’t get enough arm on the attempted pass. As a result, it sailed right into the waiting arms of a defender.
Mahomes’ first career September interception…
And it wasn’t pretty 🥴

It was only a matter of time before Mahomes suffered a loss and threw an interception in the month of September. As remarkable as the streak was while it lasted, it’s also a bit of a relief that it has come to an end. Mahomes will no longer be held to such an incredibly high and practically unrealistic standard of play to start the season. Though, an 11-1 record, with 38 touchdowns and a single interception is hardly something to scoff at.
