Vance Welch, Jeff Burda, George Walker, John Seehausen take home wins at drama-filled Golfweek Senior Amateur

There was no shortage of drama at the 2023 Golfweek Senior Amateur.

There was no shortage of drama at the 2023 Golfweek Senior Amateur.

The Firecliff course at the Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert, California, played host to one of the more dramatic finishes in Golfweek Senior Amateur history, with two of the events needing a playoff to decide things.

Vance Welch outlasted four others in a wild playoff.

Jeff Burda was dominant in the Super Senior division.

George Walker overcame a snowman on the scorecard earlier in the week.

John Seehausen defeats a former NBA star to win the Super Legends division.

Here’s more on each of the four divisions:

Senior Division (55-64)

Five players in the senior division ended up tied at 2 over following 54 holes. 36-hole co-leaders Tommy Brennan and Kirk Maynord both slipped from the top rung of the leaderboard following rounds of 4-over 76 to find themselves in a five man dog fight for the title.

The three challengers were all coming of sub-par rounds with Loren Lopeman having the hottest hand following a 4-under 68 to earn a spot in the playoff.

After playing the par-4 1st hole, Mike Combs bowed out with a bogey. The four remaining players then headed to the par-4 9th where Loperman and Brennan were eliminated.

Just as the sun was setting over the San Jacinto mountains, Vance Welch won the championship with a par on the par-3 8th. Welch, a Maryland native, improved each day en route to the win using rounds of 75, 72 and closing with a final 71 to backdoor his way to the win.

Super Senior (65-69)

Jeff Burda didn’t just play this week. He dominated.

The lone super senior that was exempted into last year’s U.S. Senior Amateur ran laps around not just his age bracket, but the entire field.

The So Cal native built a seven stroke lead with back-to-back rounds of 70 but saved his most impressive round for last. His bogey free final round 64 was the lowest score to par all week across all age groups and was six shots off of the all-time scoring record of 18 under.

Curtis Worley carded a final round 71 to secure a solo second place finish at 4 over while Scott Masingill rounded out the podium with a 5-over performance on the week.

Legend Division (70-74)

Legend George Walker had himself quite a roller coaster of a week.

Opening the tournament with four consecutive birdies, Walker ended his first round with an eight for a three-way tie for the 18-hole lead. After a second round 76, Walker trailed the leader, Fred Clark, by four shots heading into the final round.

Repeating his hot start from Thursday, Walker birdied the first four holes. Unlike Thursday, however, Walker was able to close out his round strong and avenged his snowman on 18 with a birdie to capture the championship and win by two shots.

Fred Clark finished second at 2 under for tournament while Patrick Rohan finished third at 2 over.

Super Legend (75+)

Another playoff occurred, this time in the 75+ Super Legend division. John Seehausen and former NBA star Jack Marin were both tied at 7 over through 54 holes.

Losing a playoff in this event two years ago, Marin was once again a bridesmaid as Seehausen defeated him in a one-hole playoff to take home the championship.

Robert Funk paces field after one round at 2023 Golfweek Senior Division National Championship

It’s an elite senior amateur field at Desert Willow Golf Club.

One of the most elite senior amateur fields of the year is being paced by one man through 18 holes. Robert Funk holds a one shot lead after posting a 1-under 71 to open the Golfweek Senior Division National Championship at Desert Willow Golf Club in Palm Desert, California.

Despite not feeling 100 percent with his golf swing, Funk managed to score when he needed to, carding three birdies on the round.

When it comes to his game plan for Monday’s penultimate round, he says he’s just going to take it one shot at a time.

As for those in pursuit, there are plenty of contenders waiting. Joe Palmer leads the pack as the lone man to shoot even par on the day. Three over through 15 holes, Palmer closed his first round out strong with a trio of birdies.

Seven men are tied for third. The pack is highlighted with 2021 U.S. Senior Open low amateur Billy Mitchell and 2021 Golfweek Player of the Year and 2022 Challenge Cup captain, Craig Hurlbert.

Seven more players lurk three shots back at 2 over and 16 more players are just four shots back at 3 over. From top to bottom, the entire field is separated by 15 shots or less. The crowded leaderboard is to be expected. Last year’s Golfweek Senior Division National Championship was one of the highest-rated fields in all of senior amateur golf last year, making this championship a sneak peek into the summer major season.

When it comes to how he’s going to defend his slim lead against such a large number of players, Funk has just one request: “I’d love to make more putts.”

Terry Cook, Don Kuehn among leaders at 2022 Golfweek Senior Desert Showdown

Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Arizona, is host of the 2022 Golfweek Senior Desert Showdown.

Casino Del Sol’s Sewailo Golf Club was a beautiful canvas for opening round action of the 2022 Golfweek Senior Desert Showdown.

Some of the best senior amateur players from across the country have descended upon Tucson, Arizona, to duke it out in the desert for 54 holes. With players ranging in age from 55 to older than 75, plenty of scores came in under retirement age.

Terry Cook has the early lead in the 55-64 year old senior division. Pacing the field with a blazing 6-under 66, the Iowa native holds a four-shot lead. A lone bogey on the par-4 5th dirtied Cook’s scorecard but he was able to finish strong with three birdies over his final five holes to close out his impressive start.

Four players sit at 2 under with another duo finishing Wednesday’s opening round five back of the lead. Golfweek’s No. 2 ranked senior amateur Kevin VandenBerg finished his day at even par. Unable to keep bogeys off of his card, VandenBerg was able to finish on a high note as he closed with a birdie on No. 18 in hopes to gain a bit of momentum heading into Thursday’s second round.

VandenBerg is practically the only challenger to No. 1 Rusty Strawn for 2022 Golfweek Player of the Year honors. With less than three events left in the season and Strawn playing in the East-West Matches this week, a strong finish by VandenBerg would take a bite out of the 1,930 points that separate him and Strawn.

Super Senior Don Kuehn is in a familiar spot: atop the leaderboard. Kuehn carded a 2-under 70 to take an early two-stroke lead. As a winner of 44 championship events throughout his career, Kuehn looks to make it 45 before heading home to be inducted into the Kansas Golf Hall of Fame next week.

Florida’s Jim Starnes trails by two after a 72. Dan Parkinson and Robin Rubrecht are hot on the trail after matching each other with 1-over 73s.

John Hamilton leads the way in the Legends division. The New York native made the cross country trek and is loving the change of pace. Firing a 5-over 77, Hamilton didn’t quite shoot his age but will take a one-shot lead into Thursday looking to change that.

Steve Wilson and Craig Collins came into the clubhouse with some of the most impressive golf of the day. Both in the Super Legend division (75-years-old and up), the pair turned in matching 1-under 71s.

Wilson was bogey free on the day with his lone birdie coming on the par-5 14th. Collins had a much more colorful scorecard that was highlighted with an eagle on the par 5 8th. Neither man can rest easy thinking it’s a two horse race. Dan Nicholson and Richard Hunt lurk at 2 over par, making the Super Legend age bracket one to watch as the championship turns its eyes to Thursday’s second round.

Kevin VandenBerg, three others take home wins at Golfweek Senior National Championship

Kevin VandenBerg was the highest ranked player in the field.

Kevin VandenBerg claimed what was his at the 2022 Golfweek Senior National Championship at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The highest ranked player in the field per Golfweek’s senior amateur rankings, VandenBerg was able to overcome an uncharacteristic first round to win the inaugural championship by two strokes.

VandenBerg used four birdies to negate three final-round bogeys, good for a 1-under 71. Playing with Steve Maddalena, the Michigander kept the pressure on as he matched VandenBerg shot for shot on the front nine.

Trading momentum shifts, VandenBerg was able to keep big numbers off his card and controlled a one-shot lead as the duo stood on the 18th tee. Unable to capitalize on a scoreable par-5, Maddalena posted a par to VandenBerg’s birdie, securing the two stroke victory for the New York native.

VandenBerg also now surpasses Rusty Strawn as the No. 1 ranked player in Golfweek’s Senior Amateur rankings.

Child Guy rounds out the senior podium with a third place finish at 10 over.

In the super senior division, it was Stephen Fox who was able to hold on to a two stroke victory as he crawled into the clubhouse going 5 over in his final four holes. Larry Vaughan (6 over) and Tim Vigotsky (7 over) nabbed silver and bronze finishes.

Legend Pete Allen used a steady 1-over 73 to take home a four-stroke win. Tied with Charley Yandell heading into the day, Allen stayed relatively mistake free to coast into the clubhouse for the win.

Unarguably the most impressive performance of the week came from Super Legend John Blank. The Maryland native carded rounds of 70, 73, and 71 to run away with the 75+ age division title. Two under on the week Blank beat every single player in the field, regardless of age division, by at least six shots.

All four champions earned 1,200 points in their respective Player of the Year race. The next Golfweek senior event is the 2022  Golfweek U.S. Super Senior, Legends, & Super Legends National Championship at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Georgia, July 2-5.

Two tied at the top following first round of the Golfweek Senior Amateur National Championship

Just 19 miles from the LPGA’s Chevron Championship, some of the world’s best senior amateurs are teeing it up.

Just 19 miles from where golf’s first major of the year, the Chevron Championship, is being played, some of the world’s best senior amateurs are teeing it up themselves.

PGA West in La Quinta, California, is hosting the Golfweek Senior Amateur National Championship, just a 30-minute drive from the Chevron Championship at Mission Hills.

Don Whittemore and Larry Nunez are the two who share a spot at the top of the leaderboard in the 55-to-64 year old division. Both carded even par rounds of 72. With just 10 birdies between the duo, Pete Dye’s Dune Course flexed its muscles to keep the leaders out of red numbers. Robert Funk rounds out the podium after day 1 with a 1-over 73.

Meanwhile, super senior Jeff Burda used five birdies to propel himself to an opening 70 and to the top of the field in the 65-to-69 division. Close on his heels, Steve Cribari posted a 1-under 71 to lead the charge come Friday’s moving day.

Curtis Worley and Doug Hopton-Jones have a share of third place thanks to their even-par rounds.

The legend division is led by Peter Van Ingen and Wyatt Meyer who each just missed out on shooting their age. Their matching 75s are good for a single stroke lead over both Gary Hardin and Evan Long.

Six more golfers are within four shots of the leaders.

In the super legends division, John Walker takes the early lead after a 1-under 71. He holds a single stroke over a trio of men tied at even par. John Seehausen is 1 over and rounds out the top 5 in the 75+ year old division.

The second round tees off at 7 a.m. local time (10 a.m. ET) at the PGA West Mountain Course.
