Payton Thorne, KeAndre Lambert-Smith break down Auburn’s game-winning play

The pair solidified Auburn’s upset of No. 14 Texas A&M by connecting on a two-point play in the 4th overtime.

Saturday night’s game between Auburn and No. 14 Texas A&M ended in typical “night game in Jordan-Hare Stadium” fashion.

Auburn led by 21 points early in the game before Texas A&M stormed back to take a 31-28 lead over the Tigers in the late stages of the 4th quarter. Auburn kicker later [autotag]Ian Vachon[/autotag] nailed a 29-yard field goal with 0:05 remaining in the game to force overtime with a 31-31 tie.

Chaos continued into the overtime as each team traded touchdowns and field goals in the first two periods before missing out on a chance to win in the third period.

Auburn finally emerged victorious when quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] connected with wide receiver [autotag]KeAndre Lambert-Smith[/autotag] [autotag]in the 4th overtime period to push Auburn ahead, 43-41[/autotag]. Texas A&M failed to convert on their opportunity, thus solidifying the win.

Following the game, the duo behind one of the most memorable plays in Auburn history broke down the steps leading up to the play. Lambert-Smith says that the play has been practiced several times before and felt confident that the call would work.

“We have run that play since I’ve been here, since the summer. We hit it every day in practice against the defense. I was lowkey pitching for them to call it,” Lambert-Smith said postgame. “We tried it on one of the previous overtimes, I think it was the one where Payton scrambled and threw it out of bounds, and then we came back to it, and I’m like, ‘P, just throw it, it’s just like practice, just throw it and I’m ready to catch.’ He threw it, and I had to win, and I won. We won.”

Thorne broke down the play postgame by saying that his throw was less than perfect, but had confidence that Lambert-Smith could make the play.

“First off, it was a heck of a catch (by Lambert-Smith). The ball was a little behind him, and I had to throw it a little earlier than usual,” Thorne said. “We dressed up the boundary side more than we usually do on that play, and I was a tad late getting back but not too late. I put it up there and Dre had a few contested catches tonight, so obviously a great play by him.”

The game ended with Auburn fans rushing the field to celebrate with the team as their postseason hopes remain alive. Lambert-Smith, who is in his first, and last, season as an Auburn Tiger, says that the night was one he will never forget.

“I don’t know, it felt different. I put on my story, ‘last one in Jordan-Hare, let’s make it memorable,” and that is definitely something I will never forget,” Lambert-Smith said. “I was in the crowd, I was surfing, it felt like a movie. I felt like it was a great way to send the seniors out, the guys who have been here four or five years. I’m happy that I could be the one to do it, I don’t take it lightly.”

Thorne ended the game with 301 passing yards and two touchdowns while Lambert-Smith reeled in two passes for 104 yards. The duo, as well as the rest of the Auburn Tigers, will look to pull off another upset next Saturday on the road in Tuscaloosa against No. 15 Alabama. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Updated SEC football standings after Week 13’s action

Here is how the SEC standings look after Week 13.

With the conclusion of Saturday’s action, we have only one week remaining in the 2024 SEC football regular season. It also means we have only one week remaining until we find out which SEC teams will make it to Atlanta for the conference’s title game.

The conference standings also received a significant shakeup this past Saturday, as multiple upsets occurred across the SEC that affected the potential SEC title game outlook.

Here are the latest SEC conference standings coming out of Week 13:

Updated SEC Football Standings after Week 13

1. Texas (6-1)

2. Georgia (6-2)

T-3. Tennessee, Texas A&M (5-2)

5. South Carolina (5-3)

T-6. Alabama, LSU, Missouri, Ole Miss (4-3)

10. Florida (4-4)

T-11. Arkansas, Vanderbilt (3-4)

T-13. Oklahoma, Auburn (2-5)

15. Kentucky (1-7)

16. Mississippi State (0-7)

Alabama’s loss to Oklahoma in Week 13 devastated their SEC championship game hopes. The Crimson Tide would’ve had the inside track to Atlanta with a win, but they are now eliminated.

At the moment, the Texas Longhorns are the lone SEC team with only one loss in conference play and will be in Atlanta if they beat Texas A&M on Saturday. The same thing can also said for the Aggies. The winner of that game will play Georgia in Atlanta for the SEC championship.

In photos: Auburn fans storm the field following upset of No. 14 Texas A&M

A wacky week 13 of the college football season included a four OT affair at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

What a wild way to end a bizarre day in college football.

Auburn found a way to play a role in a day filled with upsets as they took down No. 14 Texas A&M, 43-41, in four overtimes at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Auburn avoided disaster after allowing Texas A&M to storm back to take a 31-28 lead after being down 21-0 early in the 2nd quarter. Auburn kicker Ian Vachon nailed a 29-yard field goal to tie the game with 0:05 remaining in the 4th quarter to send the game to overtime.

From there, each team traded touchdowns and field goals in the first two overtime periods before failing to convert their respective “two-point attempts” in the 3rd overtime. Auburn quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] connected with wide receiver [autotag]KeAndre Lambert-Smith[/autotag] in the 4th overtime to jump ahead 43-41. Texas A&M’s answer was denied as an attempted reverse pass from quarterback Marcel Reed to receiver Amari Daniels was dropped in the end zone, thus resulting in the overtime loss.

SEC standings after upset-filled Week 13

The SEC championship race got much clearer after Ole Miss, Alabama, and Texas A&M lost in Week 13

The Texas Longhorns prevailed 31-14 over Kentucky to remain atop the SEC standings after a chaotic Week 13. If the Longhorns beat Texas A&M next week, then Texas will play in the SEC championship.

Florida upset No. 9 Ole Miss 24-17 at home to become bowl eligible and spoil Ole Miss’ College Football Playoff hopes. Florida’s win is Tennessee’s gain. Tennessee is now expected to be in the playoff bracket after Ole Miss’ loss.

Auburn stunned Texas A&M at home with a 43-41 victory in quadruple overtime. Oklahoma’s defense dominated Alabama en route to a 24-3 victory. Winning on the road in the SEC is extremely hard and it cost three SEC teams a realistic chance at an at-large bid in the playoff.

The Georgia Bulldogs defeated UMass 59-21. Georgia had a great offensive showing, but struggled at times defensively against an inferior opponent.

Brady Cook, Luther Burden and Missouri won 39-20 over Mississippi State.

South Carolina took care of business and won 56-12 against Wofford. Tennessee beat UTEP 56-0. Arkansas picked up a 35-14 win over Louisiana Tech to become bowl eligible. A disappointing four SEC teams played non-Power Four opponents in Week 13.

Best photos from Oklahoma’s win over Alabama, fans rushing the field postgame

A look at some of the best photos from the Oklahoma Sooners upset win over the No. 7 Alabama Crimson Tide.

What a night in Norman, Oklahoma. On senior night and with the Alabama Crimson Tide in town, Sooner Nation showed out in a big way, rising to the occasion to provide an energy and environment that had a significant impact on the Oklahoma Sooners win over the Alabama Crimson Tide.

In the end, the Oklahoma Sooners welcomed thousands of their closest friends onto the field to revel in the 24-3 domination.

The Sooners made Alabama look like the team that had struggled to get to 5-5 on the season. Not the No. 7 team in the nation that was hoping to solidify its place in the College Football Playoff.

The offense pounded the ball with Jackson Arnold and Xavier Robinson in the run game to the tune of 257 rushing yards on 50 attempts. The defense kept one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC, Jalen Milroe, in check for four quarters. They never let him get going in the running game and provided enough pressure to make it difficult to push the ball down the field.

It was an incredible night in Norman as Oklahoma honored its seniors in the best way they could, with a huge win over a top-10 Alabama Crimson Tide team.

Here are some of the best photos from the Sooners win over Alabama.

Instant analysis: Auburn takes down No. 14 Texas A&M in 4 OT thriller

Auburn’s postseason dreams remain alive after a thrilling victory over the No. 14 Aggies on Saturday night.

What started as a magical night on the Plains nearly ended in disaster.

The home-standing Auburn Tigers jumped out to an early 21-0 in its game with No. 14 Texas A&M on Saturday. However, Texas A&M outscored Auburn, 24-10 over the final 30 minutes to force overtime. The Tigers continued to play with purpose through the overtime period, which led to a 43-41 win on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama.

Both teams traded touchdowns and field goals in the first two overtime periods before missing their respective “two-point attempts” in the third stanza. The ultimate decider was a pass from Auburn quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] to receiver [autotag]KeAndre Lambert-Smith[/autotag] in the fourth overtime period. The pass, along with a failed reverse pass from Texas A&M, led the Tigers to victory.

Texas A&M trailed 21-7 at halftime, but scored two touchdowns in 7:09 of game time to tie the game at 21-21. Auburn regained control of the game briefly thanks to a one-yard touchdown run by [autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag] with 2:27 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Momentum was shortlived as the Aggies scored 10 unanswered points to take a 31-28 lead with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. Auburn kicker [autotag]Ian Vachon[/autotag] sent the game to overtime by connecting on a 29-yard field goal with 0:05 remaining in the 4th quarter.

Auburn held a slight advantage in overall yards, 469-463, and scored in four of its five red zone trips on Saturday. The Tigers achieved those goals despite having the football 13 minutes less than Texas A&M, and running 15 fewer offensive plays. Thorne completed 19 passes to seven different receivers for 301 yards and two touchdowns. Lambert-Smith and [autotag]Cam Coleman[/autotag] each had over 100 yards in receptions while [autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag] rushed for 130 yards and three scores on 28 attempts.

Auburn quickly gained control of the game by scoring on its first three drives. Jarquez Hunter capped the opening drive by scoring on a two-yard rush at the 11:22 mark in the 1st quarter to push Auburn ahead, 7-0.

The next two touchdowns were by-products of a great connection formed between quarterback Payton Thorne and wide receiver Cam Coleman. One week after connecting on eight passes for 100 yards and three touchdowns in Auburn’s win over ULM, the duo paired up again for four passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns. The scores of 63 and 15 yards, respectively, put Auburn ahead 21-0 early in the 2nd quarter.

Texas A&M added one score at the 4:13 mark in the 2nd quarter on a one-yard rush by Terry Bussey to cut Auburn’s lead to 21-7 at halftime.

It did not take long for the Aggies to bounce back, as it took 7:09 of game time to tie the game. Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed and wide receiver Noah Thomas connected twice in the early stages of the second half on passes of 14 and 73 yards to tie the game at 21-21 with 7:51 remaining in the quarter.

Auburn’s regular season concludes next Saturday when it travels to Tuscaloosa to face the No. 15 Alabama for the 89th Iron Bowl. Kickoff from Bryant-Denny Stadium is set for 2:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcasted live on ABC.

Instant reactions to No. 14 Texas A&M football team’s overtime loss at Auburn

Following Saturday’s matchup between the Aggies and Tigers, we break down our instant reaction.

Well, perhaps Nick Saban was right after all.

The legendary college football coach at Michigan State, LSU and Alabama shared a warning for the 12th Man on Saturday morning during College GameDay on ESPN.

“I would be alerting Texas A&M because in my opinion, in 17 years going to Auburn, playing in Jordan Hare, that place is haunted,” Saban proclaimed. “The way we lost games and won games there is unbelievable.”

No. 14 Texas A&M (9-2, 6-1) lost 43-41 in quadruple overtime at Auburn (4-7, 1-6) on Saturday night. With five minutes left in the second quarter, the Aggies trailed 21-0, but ultimately tied the game 12 minutes later at 21 a piece.

The contest went into overtime knotted 31-31. The game ended with a dropped 2-point conversion reception by junior running back Amari Daniels. The haunted hallows of Jordan Hare Stadium certainly factored into the crazy contest.

The Aggies host their regular season finale at Kyle Field against No. 3 Texas on Nov. 30 at 4:30 p.m. on ABC.

Auburn vs. Texas A&M injury report: Final update, news for Saturday

Here is the final update on Auburn’s injury report ahead of its week 13 game vs. Texas A&M.

Kickoff between the Auburn Tigers and the No. 14 Texas A&M Aggies is less than two hours away, and the final SEC Student-Athlete Availability Report has been released for the game.

Auburn’s report features six players, four of whom are nursing season-ending injuries. Tight end [autotag]Rivaldo Fairweather[/autotag] has been added to the report with a “game-time decision” tag.

One player, kicker [autotag]Alex McPherson[/autotag], has been ruled out due to an ongoing gastrointestinal illness. Head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] will look to walk-on kicker [autotag]Ian Vachon[/autotag] to handle kicking duties on Saturday following his debut performance in Auburn’s win over ULM. In that game, he connected on all six of his extra-point opportunities and went 2-for-2 on field goal chances, connecting on a long of 26 yards.

Freeze complimented Vachon’s performance during Monday’s preview press conference by saying that it would be tough to remove his duties.

“It’d be hard to take it from him at this point. Again, I think Towns (McGough) is going to be outstanding. He’s just a young freshman. All of our freshmen are making mistakes that are playing. Kickers probably get more magnified than a DB or defensive lineman. I want to be sure everybody hears me loud and clear, I think his future is extremely bright. You don’t get that type of leg strength often. Currently, Ian (Vachon) is batting 1,000. Those have been critical plays in some of our losses that had we made those the whole dynamic of that game at that point kind of changes, so we’re not going to take the ball out of his hands right now. I’m proud of him. It’s a great story. He came through when he got his number called Saturday, so he’ll get another chance.”

Here is a look at the final SEC Student-Athlete Availability Report ahead of Auburn’s game vs. Texas A&M, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.

Auburn injury report

  • OLB Jamonta Waller (Out)
  • DB Tyler Scott (Out)

Texas A&M injury report

  • RB Le’Veon Moss (Out)
  • OL Mark Nabou Jr. (Out)
  • QB Jaylen Henderson (Out)

Caleb Wooden injury update

Wooden was listed as questionable for Saturday’s game on Wednesday’s initial SEC Student-Athlete Availability Report due to an undisclosed injury that kept him sidelined for last week’s game vs. ULM. He has been cleared to play according to the final report released Saturday, and will provide key depth to the Auburn defensive backfield.

Caleb Burton injury update

Burton has not appeared in a game since Auburn’s loss to Arkansas on Sept. 21. It was reported that Burton had missed several weeks of action due to concussion protocol. However, he is no longer listed on Auburn’s availability report, and will be available to play against Texas A&M.

Five-star CB Na’eem Offord plans surprise visit to the Plains

Will Auburn close the deal and flip the top in-state recruit from his pledge to Ohio State?

The Early Signing Period is less than two weeks away, and Auburn has been given the opportunity to win over one of the top recruits in the nation.

[autotag]Na’eem Offord[/autotag], Alabama’s top recruit from the 2025 recruiting cycle, is paying a visit to the Plains for Auburn’s game with No. 14 Texas A&M on Saturday, giving [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] another opportunity to flip Offord from his pledge to Ohio State.

According to a report from Christian Clemente of Auburn Undercover, Offord’s visit surprises Auburn’s coaching staff as his name was not originally on the visitors list for Saturday’s game. Saturday will also mark the fourth time the five-star CB from Birmingham has visited Auburn this season.

Offord joins four-star RB and Georgia pledge [autotag]Ousmane Kromah[/autotag] and three-star RB [autotag]Zion Johnson[/autotag] as 2025 recruits who are taking unofficial visits to Auburn this weekend while five 2025 recruits, including five-star DL Justus Terry, are on official visits according to Auburn Undercover.

Offord is the No. 11 recruit from the 2025 cycle according to 247Sports, and is the No. 2 cornerback in addition to being the No. 1 recruit from Alabama. Auburn holds a “flip” prediction from 247Sports national recruiting analyst Tom Loy. Will Auburn close the deal this weekend?

A pair of Auburn commits forecasted to flip to Ole Miss

Will Lane Kiffin ultimately win the battle for Auburn’s top 2025 commits?

Auburn football has the nation’s No. 5 recruiting class heading into the final stages before the early signing period. However, a fellow SEC program is looking to stall the Tigers’ success by flipping two of their top commits.

EDGE [autotag]Jared Smith[/autotag] and QB [autotag]Deuce Knight[/autotag] rank No. 1 and No. 3 in Auburn’s 2025 recruiting rankings according to 247Sports, and Ole Miss’ Lane Kiffin wants to change that. In recent weeks, he and his staff have worked to flip Smith and Knight from Auburn ahead of the early signing period, which begins Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Ole Miss’ efforts are beginning to pick up steam as two 247Sports insiders have submitted flip predictions in favor of the Rebels. Ole Miss insider David Johnson predicts that Smith will join Ole Miss’ signing class, while Mississippi State expert Rion Young has a crystal ball set for Ole Miss in favor of landing Knight.

Ole Miss and South Carolina are seen as Auburn’s biggest competitors for Smith’s signature. During a recent visit to Auburn, Smith told Auburn Undercover’s Christian Clemente that he is looking for a “home atmosphere” in a college and says he is not worried about Auburn’s 4-6 record.

“Man, don’t even worry about the record. I’m not worried about the record,” Smith said in a recent interview with Auburn Undercover. “You see the defense eating out there. I see how I can come in and compete. Just seeing dudes that came from this locker room (Kaleb Harris) themselves play, it’s a big impact.”

Recent flips by quarterbacks Julian Lewis (USC to Colorado) and Bryce Underwood (LSU to Michigan) have brought more attention to Knight, who is also seen as a flip candidate. Auburn flipped Knight from Notre Dame on Oct. 2, but his recruitment is far from over. David Johnson of 247Sports says that Ole Miss will become more attractive to Knight if its NIL market wins the battle with the Tigers.

Ole Miss sits at No. 16 in 247Sports’ 2025 recruiting rankings and will look to creep into the top 10 before December’s signing day. Will Hugh Freeze hold on to his top commits? Or will Lane Kiffin have the last laugh?
