Saints playoff chances remain strong, but projected win total dips after bye week

The New Orleans Saints playoff odds took a hit during Week 6 of the 2020 NFL season, with the Buccaneers and Falcons both winning handily.

Week 6 of the NFL regular season was filled with fireworks. Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the fight out of Aaron Rodgers’ Green Bay Packers, while the Atlanta Falcons notched their first win of the season and the New Orleans Saints’ next two opponents — the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears — competed to see whose defense could create more turnovers. We recapped it all in greater detail in our NFC South standings update.

And it all came together with the Saints watching from home during their bye week. According to FiveThirtyEight, the 3-2 Saints still have a good shot at making the playoffs: down to just 68% after going into the bye at 72%. But strong performances from Tampa Bay and Atlanta have tampered New Orleans’ chance of a fourth consecutive NFC South division title, plummeting from 49% before the bye week down to 38%. An early November rematch with Brady’s Buccaneers looms large on the schedule.

Right now, FiveThirtyEight projects the Saints to finish the year with a 9-7 record. That’s good enough for a wild card spot, but not enough to win the division (Tampa Bay is just ahead at 10-6). It’s still too early to forecast anything serious, but here’s what the NFC playoff picture would look like based off these latest projections:

  • 1. 12-4 Seattle Seahawks (bye)
  • 7. 9-7 Los Angeles Rams at 2. 11-5 Chicago Bears
  • 6. 9-7 New Orleans Saints at 3. 10-6 Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • 5. 11-5 Green Bay Packers at 4. 6-9-1 Philadelphia Eagles

NFL power rankings, Week 5: Saints still stuck outside the top 10

The New Orleans Saints went into their bye week with two consecutive wins, but they couldn’t move the needle on updated NFL power rankings.

[jwplayer UTBPGNYc-ThvAeFxT]

A high-stakes comeback to defeat the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday night wasn’t enough to help the New Orleans Saints in the latest NFL power rankings from Doug Farrar over at Touchdown Wire.

They Saints are still his No. 13-ranked team, and while they’re now placed above the reeling Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans has been leapfrogged by the upstart Carolina Panthers.

Here’s some of what Farrar wrote on the Saints after their Week 5 win:

The stories about Brees’ arm going off the charts in a bad way have been circulating for years, but 2020 seems like a reckoning. Brees did complete five of nine passes of 20 or more air yards against L.A.’s defense for 160 yards and two touchdowns, but for the season, he has an average of 6.1 air yards per attempt, which is the second-worst in the NFL ahead of only Jared Goff at 5.9.

Not that Brees has turned into 2015 Peyton Manning — he’s got more on the ball than that in a literal and figurative sense — but it’s also true that New Orleans’ defense in no way resembles Denver’s “No-Fly-Zone” defense that dragged Manning to his second Super Bowl win at the end of that season. Sean Payton will have to manage his limited quarterback and his wildly inconsistent defense as he has all season long.

Somehow, the Saints are still Farrar’s second-best team in the NFC South. The Panthers have surged up to the No. 11 spot (from No. 14 a week ago), while the Buccaneers fell all the way down to No. 18 (from No. 9, after the Chicago Bears made Tom Brady look mortal again). And the Atlanta Falcons have fallen to No. 31 (from No. 29) after firing head coach Dan Quinn and G.M. Thomas Dimitroff.

The No. 1 overall spot in Farrar’s power rankings belongs to the Seattle Seahawks, but they’re just one of three NFC rivals ahead of the Saints (including the Panthers): other teams to watch are the Green Bay Packers (at No. 3) and the Los Angeles Rams (at No. 7). For now, the NFL’s best squads are leaning towards the AFC.

Why the Seahawks have no choice but to move beyond Dori Monson’s outdated views

The Seahawks suspended broadcaster Dori Monson for his transphobic words as the NFL endeavors to celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month.

On Friday, the NFL issued a comprehensive release in which it endeavored to celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month, which takes place in October. From the release:

October is LGBTQ+ History Month, which includes National Coming Out Day (Oct. 11) and Spirit Day (Oct. 15). Today, the NFL launches a series of new initiatives designed to engage the LGBTQ+ community.

Included are a dedicated website (NFL.com/PRIDE); a PSA celebrating out NFL Legends and voicing support and allyship; expanded partnerships with GLAAD and The Trevor Project; a PRIDE-themed NFL shield; and an assortment of LGBTQ+ content airing on NFL Network throughout October. Additionally, NFL Executive Vice President, Football Operations, Troy Vincent penned an op-ed on NFL.com

“The LGBTQ+ community is an important audience for our sport and a critical part of the NFL family,” said Jonathan Beane, NFL Chief Diversity Officer. “We continually strive to provide an inclusive and welcoming environment for all.”

This is entirely admirable, given that the NFL has not been historically welcoming to those whose life preferences are outside the “traditional norm” in any capacity. One needs to look no further than the case of former Rams linebacker Michael Sam, the first NFL player to come out publicly as gay. The Rams selected Sam in the seventh round of the 2014 draft, and though he never played a down of regular-season football, he certainly made quite the splash in and around the league. Former Buccaneers and Colts head coach Tony Dungy, who has held a prominent place in player outreach for years, said that Sam would be a “distraction” based on media attention — this in clarifying comments in which Dungy said he wouldn’t draft Sam at all.

As OutSports details, the NFL’s current video, which will air on Fox’s Sunday early game telecasts, has former players Ryan O’Callahan, Jeff Rohrer, RK Russell and Wade Davis, all of who came out as gay or bi after retiring, begin by saying: “To all current players who are thinking of coming out, when you are ready, so are we.”

The video also has Vikings safety Anthony Harris, Broncos offensive guard Dalton Risner, Ravens defensive lineman Calais Campbell, Browns receiver Jarvis Landry, Ravens defensive back Marlon Humphrey, Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski, and Cardinals receiver DeAndre Hopkins responding, “I support you, I got you, we got you, we support you, it takes all of us, and you deserve to be all you.”

It’s a great initiative, but as has been the case in a league where there is a much-needed recent focus on civil rights, police brutality, and the stories of people of color at the same time at least 25% of the NFL’s team owners have given financial support to the Trump administration, there are going to be some hypocrisy bumps to work out.

This put the Seahawks on the clock to deal with an in-house issue, which they did with the suspension of broadcaster Dori Monson. Monson has been associated with the team since 2002, and has been the Seahawks’ pre-game, post-game, and halftime shows on local radio. Monson is right-leaning and has been so publicly on a number of issues, which isn’t the problem. The problem is that at the same time the NFL is trying to be more inclusive and make people feel better about their preferences, Monson is tweeting out things like this (since deleted), regarding a recent statement by Washington state Governor Jay Inslee during a gubernatorial debate.

On Friday, the Seahawks suspended Monson indefinitely, as did local talk-radio station KIRO. 97.3 FM

“We appreciate the actions taken today by KIRO 97.3 FM and the Seattle Seahawks, and believe that suspending Dori Monson is a good first step, though we also ask Mr. Monson to issue a sincere apology and take actions to build empathy and understanding toward our transgender community — and that he realizes the harmful impact of his words by taking actionable steps towards addressing his history of homophobic and transphobic remarks,” Seattle Pride executive director Krystal Marx said in a statement to the Seattle Times. “If he is unwilling to take these important actions, Seattle Pride will continue to call for his immediate termination.

“Numerous studies have shown that trans people are at a significantly greater risk of depression, fear, isolation and suicide, largely due to ridicule, discrimination and violence. Seeing gender identity openly mocked in public only increases that stigmatization and puts transgender lives at further risk.”

“We do not comment on personnel matters,” KIRO-FM Program Director Bryan Buckalew told Touchdown Wire. We reached out to the Seahawks for a statement, but did not receive a reply.

Monson, in his capacity as a talk-radio host, has also come down firmly on the side of police in questionable shootings, denigrated peaceful protestors, claimed that Colin Kaepernick is “more trouble than he’s worth,” and ridiculed LGBTQ+ people before the aforementioned tweet came into existence.

That’s a hard thing to reconcile from an NFL franchise that has been far out front on these and other civic issues.

Before anybody gets started on “cancel culture,” the point isn’t that Monson should lose his job over this. The point is that the Seahawks have been especially earnest in their desire to be inclusive and diverse at every possible level, and this reaction from their primary radio host at a time when the league wants to break down barriers was an obvious problem. Monson has the right to say whatever he wants, and he also has the right to face the consequences of his words.

It was up to the Seahawks to make a statement in in which the franchise’s commitment to all these things was made clear. In suspending Monson, they have done that — to a point. If the suspension doesn’t turn into a termination, more questions will (and should) be raised.

The NFL is either “woke,” as it often claims these days, or it isn’t. It’s past time to get off the fence.

Wednesday Injury Report: Tyron Smith, Gregory practicing, Lawrence off

The first injury report surfaces for the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3 as they get set to travel to Seattle to face the Seahawks.

As the Dallas Cowboys prepare to ride some of the momentum from a historic comeback victory over the Atlanta Falcons, the team reported back to practice on Wednesday  in preparation for the upcoming tilt against the Seattle Seahawks.

Starting left tackle Tyron Smith continues to battle with his neck injury and did conditioning work on the side field. Wide receiver Ventell Bryant, currently on IR and eligible to return to practice next week, was also off to the side as well for conditioning. High anticipation for defensive end Randy Gregory to make his return to the Cowboys continues as conditioning continues. Gregory was reinstated by the commissioner, but cannot rejoin the team in full until Week 7.

Head coach Mike McCarthy mentioned in his morning presser Lawrence was off for the “good kind” of personal matter. It can be assumed it is related to his wife’s pregnancy. During the offseason Lawrence considered opting out of the season to be with her, but she told him he better report. She was expected to be due around this time.

If Smith is unable to go again on Sunday, expect the Cowboys to roll out the same starting offensive line that the team had against the Falcons in which they only allowed one sack on quarterback Dak Prescott.

Brandon Knight had a solid performance in Week 2 and may have earned himself the swing tackle role in 2020.

The Cowboys will continue to march towards Seattle in the coming days and will monitor Smith’s status as the travel day gets closer. When the official injury report comes out for both Dallas and Seattle, this post will be updated.

Russell Wilson looks like the NFL MVP through two weeks

The former Badger is on a roll through two weeks

If you were watching Sunday Night Football, you may have heard this shocking stat about former Badger QB and current Seattle Seahawks star Russell Wilson: He has never even received a first place vote for MVP.

The 31-year-old QB is a seven-time Pro Bowler, has led the NFL in passer rating (2015), is a Super Bowl champion, and yet has never received one single vote for MVP. That looks like it will change this year, if the first two weeks are any indication of what’s to come.

Last night, the Seahawks star put on a downfield show, throwing five touchdown passes to five different receivers. It was Seattle’s defense that made the winning stand by stopping Patriots QB Cam Newton at the 1-yard line on the final play of the night.

Wilson’s Hawks are 2-0 and look the part of a contender in the NFC. When Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll “let’s Russ cook,” Wilson delivers. He is on his way to a heavy share of MVP votes.

WATCH: Russell Wilson responds to high praise from Bill Belichick

The former Badger is on top of the league right now

After another dominant performance in week one, Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson earned praise from NFL royalty. Following a 38-25 win over the Atlanta Falcons in a game where the former Badger threw four touchdowns and no interceptions, Wilson appeared on the Dan Patrick show Friday morning.

Among the questions that Patrick asked the Seahawks star was a note about Patriots coach Bill Belichick, Wilson’s week two opponent, calling the QB the best player in the NFL.

Here was Wilson’s response, near the beginning of the full interview on the Dan Patrick Show:

Belichick and Wilson will meet on Sunday Night Football this weekend in a showdown between the two 1-0 squads.
