Seahawks should have return specialists available vs. Cardinals

Seahawks should have return specialists available vs. Cardinals

The Seattle Seahawks are facing a critical divisional game versus the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. There are legitimate availability questions surrounding both return specialists, Dee Williams and Laviska Shenault Jr. Thankfully, head coach Mike Macdonald recently said that both playmakers could be available on Sunday. Williams and Shenault Jr. are considered day to day.

Williams exited Sunday’s Week 11 victory over the San Francisco 49ers with an ankle injury. Seattle’s medical team swiftly ruled Williams out. That’s typically a bad sign, but the former University of Tennessee standout appears to have avoided a major setback.

Shenault is nursing an oblique injury. He did not return any kickoffs against the 49ers. Third-string running back Kenny McIntosh handled kickoff duties, returning one attempt for 15 yards. The Seahawks also didn’t return any punts in Week 11.

Shenault has returned 14 kicks this campaign for 449 yards. He’s averaging an explosive 32.1 yards per return, including a 97-yard touchdown. Shenault is among the best kickoff returners in the league.

Williams has returned 13 punts this season for 96 yards. He’s been sure-handed, averaging 7.4 yards per punt return. Williams has called 16 fair catches.

The Seahawks would prefer to have both return specialists available versus the Cardinals. Shenault and Williams are potential game changers. Macdonald will discuss their game-day designations on Friday.

Getting Jerrick Reed II back will have huge impact on Seahawks’ special teams

Getting Jerrick Reed II back will have huge impact on Seahawks’ special teams

The Seattle Seahawks announced their decision to designate sophomore safety Jerrick Reed II to return to practice. Reed began the 2024 campaign on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list due to an ACL injury suffered last year. His eventual return should have a massive impact on Seattle’s struggling special teams units.

Reed logged a sizable 157 snaps on special teams for the Seahawks last season, according to Pro Football Reference. Just one of Seattle’s top-three most snapped special teams players returned this season (Brady Russell), with Nick Bellore and Jon Rhattigan now playing elsewhere. When Reed returns, he should be earmarked for one of those starring roles.

Reed made his impact on special teams last year, totaling a league-high 11 tackles in the third phase prior to suffering his season-ending injury. The Seahawks could certainly use Reed’s help on special teams. Jay Harbaugh’s unit currently ranks 24th in punt return yards per game (8.1), among other disastrous areas.

Reed also possesses untapped potential at safety. The Seahawks have been banged up in the secondary, with Riq Woolen, Artie Burns, and Tre Brown all nursing ongoing injuries. If corner-turned-safety Coby Bryant returns to playing nickel corner out of necessity, Reed is a player that could assist at safety.

Seahawks near the top of Rick Gosselin’s 2021 NFL special teams rankings

One of the hardest things to swallow about the Seahawks’ disappointing 2021 season was a strong performance by the special teams unit that went to waste.

One of the hardest things to swallow about the Seahawks’ disappointing 2021 season was a strong performance by the special teams unit that went to waste. The offense and defense both had their ups and downs and almost never thrived at the same time, but this group was playing at a quality level for the entire season. Aside from an off-year by kicker Jason Meyers, this special teams unit was about as good as any in the NFL.

As expected, they came in near the top of Rick Gosselin’s annual special teams rankings. In the end, the Seahawks finished No. 3 in the league, trailing only the Colts and the incomparable Ravens.

Seattle scored particularly well in Gosselin’s punting, takeaways and points scored categories.

Strange and inexplicable things happen every offseason, but from where we’re sitting special teams coordinator Larry Izzo’s job should be as safe as anybody’s on Pete Carroll’s staff.

In some ways, the Seahawks’ special teams unit has been the star of this 2021 season. While that doesn’t speak well to how things have gone this year, it is nice to have a talented group of guys in this phase. They’re funny too, as it turns out.

Seahawks RB Travis Homer scores 73-yard touchdown on fake punt

Watch running back Travis Homer score on a 73-yard touchdown run on a fake punt.

The Seahawks’ offense remains broken, if the first drive of the game against the 49ers was any indication. Their special teams unit continues to come through with plays, though. This time they got a score out of it.

Watch running back Travis Homer score on a 73-yard touchdown run on a fake punt.

Gutsy call.

Seattle leads 7-0.
