The NFL welcomed the month of December with Week 13. The action kicked off on Thursday with the Cowboys taking on the Saints, and wrapped up Monday night as the Patriots battled against the Bills in Buffalo.

There are several former Scarlet Knights who represented Rutgers on Saturdays that are now representing new teams at the next level on Sundays. Another week of scratching and clawing for those Knights that played.

What did we learn from Rutgers at Illinois?

Rutgers’ men’s basketball team hit the road on Friday night to kick off Big Ten play with a matchup against Illinois airing on ESPN 2. The Scarlet Knights dropped an ugly one, losing by 35 with a final score of 86-51.

Rutgers’ men’s basketball team hit the road on Friday night to kick off Big Ten play with a matchup against Illinois airing on ESPN 2. The Scarlet Knights dropped an ugly one, losing by 35 with a final score of 86-51.

Rutgers now falls to a 4-4 record after starting the season has taken on Illinois 12 times in the programs history. The last meeting was this past March in the Big Ten Quarterfinals. The Fighting Illini also won by a big number, 90-68. Rutgers did defeat them during the regular season last year at home, 91-88.

The Fighting Illini have now gotten out to a 6-2 start. Despite winning two of three last week, Illinois dropped from No. 15 to just outside the top 25 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll. Since the poll was last updated on November 29, Illinois has defeated Notre Dame at home before demolishing Rutgers in the same building, where they are now 5-1 on the year. Fans may remember that the Scarlet Knights were receiving votes for the top 25 earlier this season.

The Scarlet Knights Geo Baker was once again out of commission while dealing with a hamstring issue. Facing off with an Illinois team that is 26th in the country in defensive efficiency without one of their Senior leaders was always going to be an uphill battle.

Let’s take a look at the key observations from Friday night’s Big Ten opener.

Week 12 – also known as Thanksgiving week in the NFL – was this past weekend. Plenty of players across the league used to call Rutgers their home. These Scarlet Knights scratch and claw every week for their opportunity, just how they used to for Rutgers on Saturdays.

Rutgers fans know these boys make them proud with their hard work on the field each week. Let’s take a look at where the former Scarlet Knights are and how they performed in Week 12.

Final USA TODAY 1-130 re-rank: Where did Rutgers settle?

Paul Myerberg released his weekly re-rank of all 130 FBS schools on Monday. Let’s take a look at how the Scarlet Knights lined up with the rest of the conference.

Rutgers football team dropped their final game of the season to Maryland at home, 40-16. As a result, the Scarlet Knights fell to 5-7 on the season, one win short of qualifying for a bowl game. All fans can do is look back on the season in various ways: to celebrate those upperclassmen who are moving on beyond RU, to look at stats and project for next season, or even try and see where the team matches up after the season to start preparing for next season.

Paul Myerberg released his weekly re-rank of all 130 FBS schools on Monday, and after the unpredictable college football season, there was of course still plenty of movement across the landscape of NCAA football. Before taking a look at where Rutgers stands compared to the Big Ten or the entire FBS, remember they fell short of their postseason dreams this year. With 80 teams now playing in bowl games. That may be a predictor for you when thinking about where they might land.

Rutgers reached No. 56 in the re-rank after week 4, their first loss in a tough-fought contest against now No. 3 Maryland. This week, Rutgers came in at No. 85, their lowest ranking of the season. The team’s outlook going into next season should be optimistic as a result of the bright spots they had. They had a lot of experts’ attention and continue to build a strong recruiting class.

Minnesota had the biggest rise, while Wisconsin had the steepest drop in the Big Ten. Let’s take a look at how the Scarlet Knights lined up with the rest of the conference.

Last Week’s rank Teams This Week’s rank
4 Ohio State 8
5 Michigan 3
11 Iowa 11
15 Michigan State 13

42 Minnesota 33

Rutgers slight underdog in season finale

both the Scarlet Knights and their opponents, the Maryland Terrapins, both come into the game with a 5-6 record. A win for either team results in them going bowling.

The last week of the regular season for the Big Ten is upon us. For Rutgers, they enter the week with qualifying for a bowl game on the line. In fact, both the Scarlet Knights and their opponents, the Maryland Terrapins, both come into the game with a 5-6 record. A win for either team results in them going bowling.

Rutgers is at home in the contest, but the Terps come to town as a 1.5-point favorite according to Tipico Sportsbook. Maryland has had a similar season to Rutgers. They started the season 4-0 (Rutgers started 3-0) before dropping three straight. They rebounded to win another game before dropping all three games in a gauntlet stretch versus Penn State, Michigan State, and Michigan. Both teams only Big Ten victories this season came against Illinois and Indiana.

Looking at the USA TODAY 1-130 re-rank, both teams had similar up-and-down movement all season. The Terrapins currently sit at No. 77, whereas the Scarlet Knights came in at No. 80. The final regular season game will determine Big Ten results, 1-130 standing, and obviously their bowl game eligibility as well.

In the latest update from the analytical arm of ESPN, the ESPN FPI gives Rutgers a 66.7% chance of walking away from Piscataway with a victory – their largest number this season. The OU total was set at 53 – also the highest total for any Rutgers game this season.

When looking at records against the spread, it heavily favors the Scarlet Knights. They are 6-5 ATS for the season. The Terrapins are 3-8 ATS on the season and have lost the last seven. Straight up, Maryland has fallen apart as well losing six of the last seven. Their one win was an unimpressive three-point escape against Indiana. With that being said, the fact that Maryland enters the game as a road favorite is not a good sign for Rutgers fans.

The point total has almost been a gimme when betting on the Scarlet Knights given their low offensive point total. Five of the last six games for Rutgers has gone under. In five of those games, Rutgers has scored 20 points or less. On the other side, Maryland has seen six games go over this season. Even with that being the case, taking the over in a Rutgers game does not seem like the smart move.

Rutgers football: Week 12 MVPs

Although this was not as wide of a margin as their loss to No. 20 Wisconsin, it is the first time that Rutgers has been shutout this season. Let’s take a look at the top performers for Rutgers from each phase from week 12.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fc3gzhz7qrm49z6q player_id=none image=https://rutgerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights came into Week 12 needing one more victory to become bowl eligible with only two games left to play. First up, was a matchup against Penn State. Although their record might not match what their expectations were, the Nittany Lions still had one of the best defenses in the Big Ten.

For Rutgers, this was going to be an uphill battle from the jump. With head coach Greg Schiano’s ties to Penn State back in the early to mid 90’s and them sharing recruiting grounds, this game meant a little more to everyone involved. Tipico sportsbook had Penn State favored by 17.5 points coming in.

Rutgers dropped their week 12 contest in State College, getting shutout 28-0. Although it is difficult to learn things about the team in a shutout loss, every coach and player will tell you there is always something positive you can take from every game in the college football season.

Although this was not as wide of a margin as their loss to No. 20 Wisconsin, it is the first time that Rutgers has been shut out this season. Let’s take a look at the top performers for Rutgers from each phase from week 12.

The veterans of SHI Stadium continue to scratch, claw, and ensure their impact is felt all across the NFL and week 10 was no different

Week 10 in the National Football league means we are officially past the new halfway point of the 18 week season. As always, there was action all over Sunday, with a surprise upsets on both Thursday and Monday.

The veterans of SHI Stadium continue to scratch, claw, and ensure their impact is felt all across the NFL – and Week 10 was no different. There is unfortunately a growing list of former Scarlet Knights seeing the injured list, but there are plenty of men out there representing Rutgers on Sundays who saw the field and make some big plays.

Let’s take a look at how the Scarlet Knights in the NFL performed in Week 10.

Rutgers football: Week 11 MVPs

Rutgers beat up on the Hoosiers 38-3. Now they’re one win away from a bowl game. Let’s take a look at the MVPs from each phase in week 11.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights came into a Week 11 matchup against the Indiana Hoosiers in desperate need of a win. With only four victories on the season and three games left to play, one against a very strong opponent in Penn State, the program needed this victory to solidify their chances of joining the bowling party that is the college football post-season.

It was time to control their own destiny. Even with ESPN FPI doubting the Scarlet Knights chances against the two-win Hoosiers, they beat up on the Hoosiers on their way to a 38-3 victory. Now, Rutgers is just one win away from qualifying for a bowl game.

This game was Rutgers largest margin of victory in conference play since they joined the Big Ten in 2014. There were plenty of Knights who made an impact all over the gridiron. Let’s take a look at the MVPs from each phase in week 11.

Rutgers football: How have the Scarlet Knights historically done against Indiana?

If the Scarlet Knights want any chance of making a bowl game this season, they will need to defy the odds and the history, and take down the storied Indiana Hoosiers program.

When predicting what will happen on the gridiron on Saturdays, some people like to look towards the betting experts. Some will look at what the experts or simulations say. But one place that is common to look is history. And ever since Rutgers joined the Big Ten, them and Indiana have a strong history.

The Scarlet Knights made the jump to the Big Ten in 2014 and have played the Hoosiers every single season since then, with them both being in the East Division of their conference.

Things started out strong for Rutgers, winning the first two matchups in 2014 and 2015. In ’14, Rutgers, led by then head coach Kyle Flood, took out Indiana 45-23 at home. They would hit the road and win again under Flood in ’15 in a shootout, 55-52.

Since then, it has been all down hill for the Scarlet Knights. The series has been hosted by each team every-other-season from 2016 through 2020, but that has not impacted the outcome. The Hoosiers are on a five game winning streak. Rutgers was shutout twice in that span – both times on the road. They play at Indiana this weekend.

Current head coach Greg Schiano has only been here for one of the five losses – a 37-21 loss in Piscataway last season. The five game losing streak has gone as follow:

  • 2016: Indiana 33, Rutgers 27
  • 2017: Indiana 41, Rutgers 0
  • 2018: Indiana 24, Rutgers 17
  • 2019: Indiana 35, Rutgers 0
  • 2020: Indiana 37, Rutgers 21

Although the Hoosiers are 2-7 this season with no conference wins, they are still expected to win according to ESPN FPI. Our friends at Tipico Sportsbook even have Rutgers as a 6.5 point underdog.

If the Scarlet Knights want any chance of making a bowl game this season, they will need to defy the odds and the history, and take down the storied Indiana Hoosiers program.

Some are veterans, some are still scratching and clawing for regular playing time. Regardless, these men make an impact each week and are an inspiration to those that love their former home in Piscataway.
