Arkansas suffers first loss of season, falling to Marquette

The Razorbacks head to Florida State on Thursday for another tough nonconference game.

The Arkansas women’s basketball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end Saturday.

In the second game of the Fort Myers Tipoff, Arkansas fell to Marquette, 74-58. The Razorbacks had beaten Wisconsin on Friday to start the season 6-0. Now the team will head to Tallahassee for a game against Florida State on Thursday.

Arkansas was dominated in the paint as Marquette won the points in the paint battle, 36-14. That dominance led to 46-27 Golden Eagles halftime edge that was simply too steep for Arkansas to climb.

The Razorbacks shot just 33 percent for the game and only two players finished in double figures scoring. Taliah Scott led the team with 21 points and Saylor Poffenbarger added 13.

Florida State is the mid-point of a tough five-game stretch for the Hogs. After playing the two Wisconsin-based schools and FSU, Arkansas returns to Bud Walton Arena for games against UCLA and Louisiana Tech.

Arkansas women defeat UCA 81-67, remain undefeated on season

Behind a balanced attack, Arkansas made easy work of UCA on Monday to stay undefeated. With the win, Mike Neighbors also made some history.

The Arkansas women’s basketball team is still undefeated after an 81-67 win over Central Arkansas on Monday.

It took the Razorbacks just three seconds to score, on a Maryam Dauda layup, and they didn’t look back. Arkansas led the rest of the way, all 38:57, en route to their fifth-straight win of the season.

Arkansas was able to win using a balanced attack, as all five starters were able to score in double figures. [autotag]Taliah Scott[/autotag] and [autotag]Saylor Poffenbarger[/autotag] led the way with 17 points each. [autotag]Samara Spencer[/autotag] chipped in 16 points of her own, while Dauda and [autotag]Makayla Daniels[/autotag] recorded 14 and 11 points, respectively.

“The balance is when we’re at our best, obviously,” said head coach [autotag]Mike Neighbors[/autotag] following the game. “I know that we’ve got that, but to see it on display in one of these first five (games)…was really good.”

With the win, it marks the third time in Neighbors’ tenure in which the Hogs have began the year 5-0. That ties Neighbors with Tom Collen and Gary Blair for most in program history.

Next up for the Razorback women is a trip to  Fort Myers, Fla. to play in the Elevance Health Women’s Fort Myers Tip-Off this weekend. They’ll play Wisconsin on Friday at 1:00 p.m. CT and either Marquette or Boston College on Saturday evening.

Both games will be streamed on FSWBucs.com and the Women’s Sports Network.

Poffenbarger holds basketball skills camp at Farmington High School

Saylor Poffenbarger is trying to get on the all-community team after being all-SEC as a redshirt freshman in 2022-23.

Saylor Poffenbarger probably remembered growing up and going to camps as a youngster, and so she and a few of her teammates decided to return the favor to some young girls in Northwest Arkansas earlier this week.

Poffenbarger enlisted the help of teammates Jenna Lawrence, who just graduated from Farmington and won the 4A state championship, and Taliah Scott.

They did skill segments with the younger campers in first-third grades, and then the fourth-sixth graders did more competitive scrimmage type scenarios.

Poffenbarger, who transferred from UConn after playing with the Huskies for a season, will be going into her redshirt sophomore season after an SEC all-freshman campaign a year ago.

Her mother starred at Missouri as a point guard from 1990-94.

Razorbacks Barnum and Poffenbarger earn postseason honors

The SEC announced its all-conference members and two Razorbacks were invited to the party.

The SEC announced their postseason all-league members and two Arkansas players were to the party.

Erynn Barnum was named to the All-SEC second team, and Saylor Poffenbarger earned All-Freshman team honors, marking the fifth consecutive year, an Arkansas player was part of an All-SEC team.

Barnum led the team in shooting percentage (57%) and points (16.3) on her way to being recognized as one of the most improved players in the country. She finished the regular season with nine 20-point games, nine more than last season.

Against Ole Miss, she set a new career-high scoring 37 points, a top-ten performance in Arkansas history.

Poffenbarger came to Fayetteville as a transfer but was highly touted out of high school.

She lived up to the hype.

The UConn transfer set a school record after being named SEC Freshman of the week five times, leading the conference this season. She led the team in minutes played while averaging nine points a game. Defensively is where she shined, leading the team with 35 blocks and 18 steals.

Both tied for most rebounds on the team averaging 6.6 per contest.

Next for the Hogs is the SEC Tournament. They’ll take on Missouri as the eighth-seed Thursday.
