Edmonton Elks at Saskatchewan Roughriders odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Edmonton Elks at Saskatchewan Roughriders odds and lines, with expert CFL picks, predictions and best bets.

The Edmonton Elks (0-4) and the Saskatchewan Roughriders (2-1) meet Thursday in a Week 5 matchup at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Saskatchewan. Kickoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET (CBS Sports Network/TSN). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Elks vs. Roughriders odds and make our expert CFL picks and predictions.

The Elks are off to a dreadful start at 0-4. They are 1 of 2 winless teams in the CFL. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats (0-3) are the other.

The Elks are last in the league in scoring, averaging just 12.3 points per game (PPG). They’ve scored 51 points in their 4 games — and that includes a 31-point outburst in a 12-point loss to Toronto in Week 3.

Edmonton was roughed up 26-7 as a 2.5-point underdog at Ottawa last weekend, and it has been outscored 48-7 in 2 road games. Overall, the Elks are 0-4 against the spread (ATS), with the Under cashing in 3 of those outings.

This is the 2nd meeting of the season between the 2 Western Division teams. The Roughriders took the 1st game 17-13 in Week 1, cashing as 2.5-point road underdogs with the Under (45) hitting.

Saskatchewan, which was on a bye last week, has scored 27 or more points in each of its past 2 games, losing at home 45-27 as a 7-point underdog to Winnipeg June 16, and topping Calgary 29-26 in overtime as a 2-point dog in Week 3.

Saskatchewan is a respectable 2-1 ATS with a 2-1 O/U mark — the Over cashed in its last 2 contests.

Elks at Roughriders picks and predictions

Prediction

Roughriders 26, Elks 20

Moneyline

Saskatchewan (-300) won the 1st matchup back in Week 1 in Edmonton, but it was a close battle. You can’t risk 3 times your potential return on the home side even if it is playing much better football, while coming off a rest from the bye.

PASS.

Against the spread

EDMONTON +7.5 (-110) is worth a roll of the dice because this is a 7 and a hook line. If it were a flat 7, I’d be more bearish, and certainly so if it were 6.5 or lower.

Edmonton has been dreadful so far as the offense has scored 13 or fewer points in 3 of 4 outings, including that Week 1 loss at home to the Roughriders. Still, this is the 1st time Saskatchewan has been favored this season, and 7.5 is an awfully big number.

Over/Under

OVER 43.5 (-110) is the lean … go really lightly on the total.

We have seen next to nothing from the Edmonton offense, outside of the 31-point explosion against Toronto in Week 3. Still, the Over is 11-5 in the past 16 for Saskatchewan following a bye week, while going 5-2 in the past 7 tries against teams with a losing record.

Plus, the Over is 5-1-1 in its past 7 games in July, too. That’s why the lean is to go high.

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Calgary Stampeders odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Saskatchewan Roughriders at Calgary Stampeders odds and lines, with expert CFL picks, predictions and best bets.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-1) and the Calgary Stampeders (1-1) meet Saturday at McMahon Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (TSN). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Roughriders vs. Stampeders odds, and make our expert CFL picks and predictions.

The Roughriders opened with a 17-13 win as 2.5-point underdogs in Edmonton with the Under (45) connecting. In Week 2, the Riders were on the wrong end of a 45-27 home loss against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as 7-point underdogs with the Over (47.5) easily coming through.

Saskatchewan rolled up 405 yards through the air in Week 2 against Winnipeg, but it managed just 48 rushing yards, while the Bombers were good for 107 yards on the ground and 4.7 yards per carry. Unfortunately for Saskatchewan, Winnipeg was 5 for 5 in the red zone.

The Stamps rebounded from a 25-15 loss at home to the BC Lions, flipping the script with a 26-15 road win at the Ottawa Redblacks in Week 2. Calgary cashed as a 6.5-point favorite vs. Ottawa, while it hit the Under — this time at 43 — for a 2nd consecutive week. The Stampeders were 2.5-point favorites in Week 1 with the Under being 50.5 vs. the Lions.

Saskatchewan and Calgary met twice last season with the Stampeders winning each outing by 11 or more points. Calgary is 4-2 against the spread (ATS) in the past 6 head-to-head meetings, too. Saskatchewan did win Nov. 28, 2021 in the 2nd-most recent meeting at McMahon Stadium, winning a 33-30 OT thriller as 2.5-point favorites.

Roughriders at Stampeders picks and predictions

Prediction

Stampeders 25, Roughriders 20

Moneyline

CALGARY (-165) returns to McMahon for the first time since a disappointing Week 1 setback to BC. The Stamps haven’t been as prolific on offense as in years past, but the defense has been doing its job with aplomb. It should be able to hold down a rather toothless Saskatchewan offense, helping the Stampeders move to 2-1 on the season.

Against the spread

CALGARY -3.5 (-105) comes with a little more risk than the ML play, although the Stampeders hit the road and took care of the Redblacks last weekend. Ottawa and Saskatchewan are fairly similar, and you can expect similar results, too.

The fact that the Stamps are back home for this one is a good sign. While Saskatchewan did win on the road at Edmonton in Week 1, this is a much bigger test, and one which the Riders will not pass.

Divvy up 1.5 UNITS between the CALGARY (-165) moneyline and the CALGARY -3.5 (-105) spread.

Over/Under

UNDER 45.5 (-110) is the lean.

The Under has hit in each game for Calgary so far, with the team averaging 20.5 points per game (PPG) and allowing 20.0 PPG.

For Saskatchewan, it was on fire in the pass game last week, but a lot of the statistics are misleading, coming in prevent-defense situations with the game well out of hand.

Expect the Roughriders offense to look close to the version we saw in Week 1 against the Elks as it was not terribly good. The defense for Saskatchewan was much better in the opener, too. Don’t expect to see the Roughriders get trampled by the Stampeders in the same fashion the Bombers took them down.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Saskatchewan Roughriders odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Saskatchewan Roughriders odds and lines, with expert CFL picks, predictions and best bets.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1-0) and the Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-0) battle Friday night at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Saskatchewan. Kickoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET (CBS Sports Network/TSN). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Blue Bombers vs. Roughriders odds, and make our expert CFL picks and predictions.

The Blue Bombers rolled to a 42-31 victory — a 4.5-point favorites — against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last weekend at IG Field in Manitoba in a 2021 Grey Cup rematch. Winnipeg went for 478 total yards, with 138 yards on the ground. The Bombers had fired out to a 29-4 halftime lead before the T-Cats made it somewhat respectable in the 2nd half.

The Roughriders managed a 17-13 road victory — as 2.5-point underdogs — against the Edmonton Elks Sunday, and now face the quick turnaround. The Riders held the Elks to just 73 rushing yards, while outgaining Edmonton by a 305-to-243 margin in total yards. Saskatchewan racked up 5 sacks, while each team turned it over 3 times in a sloppy game.

Blue Bombers at Roughriders picks and predictions

Prediction

Blue Bombers 29, Roughriders 19

Moneyline

Winnipeg (-250) will cost you 2½ times your potential return in this projected road win. That’s too risky for not enough reward.

Still, Saskatchewan (+200) cannot be trusted against the high-octane Winnipeg offense, even at home. These teams are just on 2 different planes.

PASS.

Against the spread

WINNIPEG -6.5 (-110) is a solid play, even on the road, especially if this line stays under 7.5, or even a flat 7.

The Blue Bombers routed the Ti-Cats last week by 11 points. It would have been much worse, but Winnipeg took its foot off the gas in the 2nd half.

Saskatchewan was sloppy last week in a win at Edmonton, turning it over 3 times. The Roughriders can’t afford to do that against Winnipeg or they’ll get boat-raced.

Over/Under

OVER 46.5 (-110) is the lean. Go lightly and play a HALF UNIT at best.

Winnipeg nearly took care of the Over itself in Week 1, posting a league-high 42 points. On the flip side, Saskatchewan combined for just 30 points in the Week 1 win at Edmonton.

That’s why this isn’t a slam-dunk play in Week 2. The Roughriders offense will struggle to put up points, and the Blue Bombers should see a lot more resistance this week vs. last week’s matchup.

Roughriders at Elks picks and predictions

Prediction

Elks 26, Roughriders 22

Moneyline

EDMONTON (-135) is worth a look in this CFL opener, as the home team was rock-solid in last season’s 3 regular-season meetings between these rivals.

The Elks have managed just 7 total wins across the past 2 seasons, but coach Chris Jones has a lot more to work with in Edmonton this season. He also will have a little extra incentive, as he faces his former employer.

The Roughriders (+115) enter the new season with the longest odds to win the Grey Cup, so it’s a perfect opening game matchup for Edmonton.

Against the spread

EDMONTON -2.5 (-110) is a good bet, as Saskatchewan +2.5 (-110) failed to cover the final 5 games against West teams last season, and it was 0-6 ATS to close out the campaign, while going 0-4 ATS in the final 4 road games.

The Elks weren’t much better, going 2-7 ATS in the final 9 against the West. However, Edmonton covered the most recent matchup, and this team looks to be ready to take a step back toward respectability this season.

Over/Under

OVER 45.5 (-110) is the lean in this Week 1 matchup between 2 of the weaker defenses in the CFL.

Edmonton was all about the Over down the stretch last season, cashing in 10 of the previous 14 games against teams from the West. The Over is also 7-2 in Edmonton’s past 9 games in the month of June.
