Santiago Ponzinibbio reveals ideal UFC 314 opponent for Miami

Argentine UFC star Santiago Ponzinibbio wants to fight another veteran welterweight in their home states of Miami.

LAS VEGAS – The UFC is rumored to head back to Miami this Spring and [autotag]Santiago Ponzinibbio[/autotag] wants in.

Following his UFC Fight Night 249 win, Ponzinibbio (30-8 MMA, 12-7 UFC) called for a spot on the card expected for April 12 in his current home state – and backstage he revealed his ideal opponent for that outing.

“There are so many good names,” told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a post-fight news conference. “So many good guys come to mind (who) have a long time in the road like me. We can make a great fight. I need to think quickly.

“Maybe Vicente Luque is a name that comes into my mind because the guy has so many years in the sport like me. I have a lot of respect for him. He’s a gentleman. He’s coming off a really good victory. We both have a lot of Latin people behind us and we can make a good fight. But there are so many good guys. We’ll see what the company says.”

Ponzinibbio finished Carlston Harris (19-7 MMA, 4-3 UFC) with strikes in Round 3 of Saturday’s co-main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The win snapped a two-fight skid.

Luque (23-10-1 MMA, 16-6 UFC) most recently competed in December when he slept Themba Gorimbo in 52 seconds with an anaconda choke.

UFC Fight Night 249 video: Santiago Ponzinibbio TKOs Carlston Harris in wild comeback

Santiago Ponzinibbio looked like he was out cold in the first round before rallying to finish Carlston Harris at UFC Vegas 101.

[autotag]Santiago Ponzinibbio[/autotag] had to show heart and durability against [autotag]Carlston Harris[/autotag], but it was the determining factor in his UFC Fight Night 249 win.

Ponzinibbio (30-8 MMA, 12-7 UFC) was in a bad way early against Harris (19-7 MMA, 4-3 UFC) in the welterweight co-main event on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, however, he managed to turn the tables and come through with the TKO win at the 3:13 mark of Round 3 (via X):

The fight nearly was won by Harris in the opening round when he dropped Ponzinibbio, who was badly rocked but survived until the final bell. Harris kept it up in the second frame, landing more hard shots on his Argentinean foe.

Ponzinibbio dug deep and found damaging offense on Harris in the second round, and arguably put the momentum on his side going into the significant final frame.

That’s when Ponzinibbio turned his comeback into high gear. He bloodied and dropped Harris multiple times before the referee jumped in for the standing TKO.

Harris somewhat objected the stoppage and said in his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping that it was “stopped a little but early,” but ultimately embraced Ponzinibbio after the fight.

The 38-year-old Ponzinibbio hopes the big result sets up an active 2025 campaign.

“I’ve been here for 12 years in the UFC and I deliver wars,” Ponzinibbio said in his post-fight interview with Bisping. “My wish for this year is to stay active. Maybe I can fight in Miami. I’ve lived near there for more than 10 years. It’s my second home.”

Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Carlston Harris prediction, pick, start time for UFC Fight Night 249

Evenly-matched UFC welterweights Santiago Ponzinibbio and Carlston Harris are set for the first co-main event of 2025. Who has an edge?

[autotag]Santiago Ponzinibbio[/autotag] and [autotag]Carlston Harris[/autotag] meet Saturday on the UFC Fight Night 249 main card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 0-0
UFC main cards, 2024: 0-0

Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Carlston Harris UFC Fight Night 249 preview

Ponzinibbio (29-8 MMA, 11-7 UFC) is in need of a win. Since 2021, the Argentina-born welterweight is just 2-5, in what has easily been the roughest stretch of his career. Ponzinibbio enters on a two-fight skid, following a stoppage loss to Kevin Holland in April 2023 and a split decision loss to Muslim Salikhov in July 2024. … Harris (19-6 MMA, 4-2 UFC) has the exact opposite record of Ponzinibbio since 2021, having put together a record of 5-2. However, Harris also enters on the heels of a loss, a first-round knockout by the hands of Khaos Williams in May 2024.

Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Carlston Harris UFC Fight Night 249 expert pick, prediction

The co-main event features a welterweight encounter between Ponzinibbio and Harris.

Despite this having all the feels of a crossroads fight at first glance, both men are of similar age and this fight should be competitive from start to finish.

Harris is the more skilled and willing grappler on paper, which should serve him well inside the smaller octagon. That said, Ponzinibbio, even at this advanced stage of his career, has never been easy to take down, much less control.

The “Argentine Dagger” is apparently feeling back to normal for the first time since his life-threatening health scare back in 2019, which is crazy to think about given how he’s competed in subsequent years.

Unless Harris can demonstrate a lights-out ability to ground Ponzinibbio early and often, then I believe that “The Ultimate Fighter” veteran can survive some scares and pull away down the stretch.

This is another fight that has split decision written all over it, but I’ll officially pick Ponzinibbio to get the nod.

In a 3-round welterweight bout on the main card, Santiago Ponzinibbio and Carlston Harris battle at UFC Fight Night 249 Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s UFC odds around the UFC Fight Night 249: Ponzinibbio vs. Harris odds, and make our expert picks and predictions.

The prelims begin at 4 p.m. ET, with the main card beginning at 7 p.m. ET. All events can be viewed or streamed on ESPN+.

Records: Ponzinibbio (30-8-0) | Harris (19-6-0)

Ponzinibbio has suffered back-to-back losses to Kevin Holland and Muslim Salikhov. He lost to the latter via split decision, and he suffered a Round 3 KO/TKO to Holland. He has lost 4 of his past 5 fights, with 3 of those setbacks each coming via split decision.

Harris suffered a Round 1 KO/TKO against Khaos Williams last time out, halting a modest 2-bout win streak. His last victory was Aug. 5, 2023, against Jeremiah Wells. Since making his debut at the UFC level, the fighter from Guyana has managed 4 victories in 6 bouts.

Harris holds a 3-inch reach advantage, while the veteran Ponzinibbio has a 4.74-to-3.18 significant strikes landed per minute advantage. Harris is much more accurate with those strikes, however, landing 60.72%, to just 42.19% for the Argentine fighter.

In takedown average, Harris has a mark of 1.97, while Ponzinibbio checks in at just 0.59.

  • Will the fight go the distance? (Yes +136 | No -174)

UFC Fight Night 249: Ponzinibbio vs. Harris picks and predictions

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

The veteran PONZINIBBIO (-138) takes the walk to the octagon needing a victory after a pair of losses against a pair of veterans. He has lost 4 of the past 5 fights, but the quality of opponent has at least been solid.

Harris (+120) hasn’t faced quite the same quality of opponent, and he was quickly disposed of by Williams last time out when he did face a somewhat decent foe.

It’s worth a roll of the dice to back PONZINIBBIO BY KO/TKO OR SUBMISSION (+175) on the 5-way line for method of victory.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 2.5 ROUNDS (-130) is worth a play, costing you almost 1½ times your potential return. That’s a little expensive, but not too terrible. Since we’re backing Ponzinibbio to get the finish, playing the Under in rounds is a good idea.

NO (-174): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? is a little more expensive, but not a terrible play, either.

UFC on ESPN 59 results: Muslim Salikhov gets split call over stunned Santiago Ponzinibbio

Muslim Salikhov’s biggest career win came shortly after his 40th birthday with a split decision over Santiago Ponzinibbio at UFC on ESPN 59.

The biggest win of [autotag]Muslim Salikhov[/autotag]’s career came just weeks after his 40th birthday in the form of a triumph over [autotag]Santiago Ponzinibbio[/autotag] in the UFC on ESPN 59 co-main event.

Salikhov (20-5 MMA, 7-4 UFC) avoided the first three-fight losing skid of his career and got back on the winning track Saturday with a split decision victory over Ponzinibbio (29-8 MMA, 11-7 UFC) in their welterweight clash at Ball Arena in Denver.

[lawrence-related id=2755614]

The “King of Kung Fu” used striking to his advantage once again for 28-29, 29-28 and 29-28 scores after going toe-to-toe for the majority of three rounds and edging out the exchanges in the eyes of the judges.

Avoiding the pressure of Ponzinibbio was key for Salikhov. He used footwork and movement to create angles against his oncoming opponent and uncorked some of his trademark spinning attacks when the opportunities presented themselves.

Ponzinibbio attempted takedowns at various points, but Salikhov was able to avoid any damage and get the nod in the end.

“Ponzinibbio is very experienced guy,” Salikhov said in his post-fight interview with Paul Felder. “I respect him a lot, but today, I had the best team, the best gameplan and I followed it. That’s why this happened. It was not easy, but it’s OK. I got the win.”

With the win, Salikhov has his hand raised for the first time since November 2022. Ponzinibbio, meanwhile, drops to 2-5 in his past seven fights since January 2021, which marked his return to competition from a multiyear layoff due to health issues.

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 59 odds between Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Muslim Salikhov, with MMA picks and predictions.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

In a 3-round welterweight bout on the main card, Santiago Ponzinibbio and Muslim Salikhov meet Saturday at UFC on ESPN 59 at Ball Arena in Denver. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the UFC on ESPN 59: Ponzinibbio vs. Salikhov odds, and make our expert picks and predictions.

The prelims begin 7 p.m. ET, also on ESPN/ESPN+, while the main card starts at 10 p.m. ET, also on ESPN/ESPN+.

Records: Ponzinibbio (30-7-0) | Salikhov (19-5-0)

Ponzinibbio suffered a 3rd-round KO/TKO loss to Kevin Holland at UFC 287 in his most recent appearance. His previous 2 fights have ended via knockout, although 3 of his 5 bouts have gone the distance. He did top Alex Morono via KO/TKO at UFC 282 Dec. 10, 2022 for his most recent win.

Salikhov has consecutive losses to Randy Brown and Nicolas Dalby, with his last win coming via KO/TKO in Round 3 against Andre Fialho Nov. 19, 2022. He is in the midst of a 1-3 skid across his past 4 fights, with just one of those bouts going the distance.

The Argentine fighter has a 3-inch reach advantage over Salikhov, and the latter is 3 years older at 40. Ponzinibbio has a 4.90-to-3.36 significant strikes landed per minute advantage, while the Russian is much more accurate on those strikes at 53.94% to 42.53%.

Salikhov also does great work getting fighters to the ground, which can wow the judges should it come to that. He has a 1.27 takedown average, and 40.91% takedown accuracy percentage, while Ponzinibbio barely scratches the surface at 0.48 and 30.0% respectively.

  • Will the fight go the distance? (Yes +120 | No -160)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

UFC on ESPN 59: Ponzinibbio vs. Salikhov picks and predictions

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

Ponzinibbio (-190) will cost you nearly 2 times your potential return on a straight-up wager, and that’s a little too risky on a fighter which has won just once in the past 4 outings since June 5, 2021.

Salikhov (+150) is in the same boat, however, as he has dropped 3 of his past 4 fights, too.

Salikhov has been knocked out in 2 of his past 4 fights, and that’s worth pursuing further. PONZINIBBIO BY KO/TKO OR DQ (+175) on the 7-way line is a solid value given Salikhov’s recent lack of defense.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 2.5 ROUNDS (-125) is the play in this lead-up to the main event.

We’re calling for Ponzinibbio to the get KO/TKO, and it will likely come in Rounds 1 or 2. If you’re really adventurous, consider PONZINIBBIO IN ROUND 1 (+325) and PONZINIBBIO IN ROUND 2 (+550) in round betting. Yes, you’ll lose one of those ends if he wins in either of the 2 rounds, but you’ll still be well ahead if it happens.

Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Muslim Salikhov prediction, pick, start time, odds for UFC on ESPN 59

Reeling veterans Santiago Ponzinibbio and Muslim Salikhov aim to claim victory in the UFC Denver co-main event. Who will it be?

[autotag]Santiago Ponzinibbio[/autotag] and [autotag]Muslim Salikhov[/autotag] meet Saturday in the co-main event of UFC on ESPN 59 from Ball Arena in Denver. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 2-2
UFC main cards, 2024: 54-51-2

Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Muslim Salikhov UFC on ESPN 59 preview

Ponzinibbio (29-7 MMA, 11-6 UFC) once seemed on a path toward a UFC welterweight title shot while on a seven-fight winning streak from 2015 to 2018, but things have changed in recent years. Now 37, Ponzinibbio’s career has been marred by injuries and losses as he’s gone 2-4 since 2021. He most recently competed in April 2023, losing by third-round knockout to Kevin Holland at UFC 287. … Salikhov (19-5 MMA, 6-4 UFC) has taken a similar path to his career. Once on a five-fight winning streak, Salikhov, 40, has hit a rough patch, losing three of his past four bouts since July 2022. He’s currently on a two-fight skid with a unanimous decision loss to Nicolas Dalby and most recently a first-round knockout by Randy Brown this past February.

Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Muslim Salikhov UFC on ESPN 59 expert pick, prediction

The co-main event in Denver features a welterweight showdown between Ponzinibbio and Salikhov.

These two are clearly in their post-primes, but I’m happy to see veterans like Ponzinibbio and Salikhov getting some shine in a featured spot. That said, despite being a big fan of Ponzinibbio, I was admittedly a little surprised to see him favored in this fight.

Don’t get me wrong: the stylistic dynamic of Ponzinibbio’s superior pace and stamina presents an obvious on-paper path for the Argentine, I’m just not so sure that the 37-year-old’s durability is still good enough to support said game.

Salikhov has certainly been on the wrong side of strikes and stoppages at the age of 40, but the quality and amount of damage sustained between the two are not equal.

Ponzinibbio, for example, has been absorbing roughly double the amount of strikes that Salikhov has over the last half-decade and has been getting dropped by everything from legit shots to off-balance arm punches.

Add in the kicking openings that Ponzinibbio’s boxing-centric stance provides, and I can’t help but side with Salikhov to find an early finish in round 1.

Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Muslim Salikhov UFC on ESPN 59 odds

The oddsmakers and the public favor the Argentinian fighter, listing Ponzinibbio at -205 and Salikhov +164 via FanDuel.

Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Muslim Salikhov UFC on ESPN 59 start time, how to watch

As the co-main event, Ponzinibbio and Salikhov are expected to make their walks to the cage at approximately 12:05 a.m. ET (10:05 p.m. local time in Denver). The fight airs on ESPN and streams live on ESPN+.
