Is “Vegas Vance” back?

Vance Jackson (26 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals) led all scorers, and the New Mexico Lobos soundly defeated the San Jose State Spartans on Wednesday in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament. Makuach Maluach (22 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals) also played a sound game for New Mexico. Corey Manigault also approached 20 with 18 points in the contest.

For San Jose State, it was a whole lot of Seneca Knight (22 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists) and Omari Moore (17 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 8 steals) but contributions from the rest of the Spartans players weren’t enough to allow the Spartans to make a charge against the Lobos.

[lawrence-related id=26523]

The win propels New Mexico to a quarterfinal matchup with Utah State, a team which the Lobos played just five days ago in a 66-64 victory.

For San Jose State, which fought hard throughout, it means the end to another challenging season with a young team and a loss for a program that is still trying to find its first win in the Mountain West Tournament since joining the conference in 2013.

Early in the game, it was San Jose State that looked like the better team, with the Spartans going up 8-4 with 18:02 remaining in the first half. But then New Mexico put together a key 21-0 run, fueled by defense, that put the Lobos up 25-8.

The run proved to be too much for the Spartans, as they were never able to come within more than 9 points through the rest of the game.

Key to the game was stingy defense, good ball movement on offense, a plus 9 rebounding differential in favor of New Mexico and a perfect night at the free-throw line, with New Mexico making all 14 attempted free throws.

Then there was the return of “Vegas Vance”. And Jean Prioleau had a brief opinion on the “Vegas Vance” nickname.

Jackson looked the part, once again, of a player who may once more be considered for the All-Mountain West Tournament team as he was a year before, when he averaged 25.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.0 steals.

So what is it that makes Jackson transform into his “Vegas Vance” at tournament time?

“I don’t want to lose. I don’t like losing. I feel like at this point our back is against the wall as a team we just want to, just, keep moving forward and we got a big one tomorrow against Utah State. And I do like that name [Vegas Vance].”

New Mexico could well use more of “Vegas Vance” tomorrow, when the Lobos take on the Utah State Aggies at 6 PM CT at the Thomas and Mack Center on CBS Sports.

Mountain West Tournament: Day 1 Results and Highlights

Wyoming makes history; Lobos, Falcons also advance

Contact/Follow @andrewdieckhoff & @MWCwire

Day 1 of the Mountain West Tournament has already provided some good drama.

With the opening round of the Mountain West Tournament in the books, let’s take a quick look at who will stay at the table in Vegas — and who is heading home empty-handed.

(9) Air Force def. (8) Fresno State, 77-70

The Falcons may have flown off course during the season, but they kept their 2019-20 campaign alive on Wednesday, thanks to a 24-point performance from AJ Walker. Fresno State’s season never really got off the ground, and they’ll limp back home with no postseason on the horizon.

(7) New Mexico def. (10) San Jose State,  79-66

Following a sensation Senior Night in which he led the Lobos to an upset of Utah State, Vance Jackson kept it up against the Spartans. The senior put up 26 and 12 for New Mexico. Jean Prioleau saw his team improve from last season, but they still have a long way to go.

(11) Wyoming def. (6) Colorado State, 80-74

Easily the least likely of the three upsets, Wyoming was not ready to be swept in three Border War bouts this season. The Cowboys became the first-ever #11 seed to win a game in the Mountain West Tournament behind 20 points from Kwane Marble. Colorado State will now wait to see if their 20 wins will be enough to earn a bid to one of the lesser postseason tournaments.

Check back tomorrow for updates from Day 2 of the Mountain West Tournament. In the meantime, head over to our MW Tournament Hub to keep up on all the hoops coverage here at Mountain West Wire.

New Mexico and San Jose State split the regular season with each team getting a home game.

WHO: New Mexico Lobos (18-13, 7-11 MW) vs. San Jose State  (7-23, 3-15 MW)

WHEN: Wednesday, March 4 — 3:30 PM MT

WHERE: Thomas and Mack Center – Las Vegas, NVO (19,522)

TV: None

STREAM: Mountain West Network

RADIO: New Mexico | San Jose State

SERIES RECORD: New Mexico leads, 15-3

ODDS: New Mexico -9.5

Much like the conference season, the Mountain West Tournament is starting earlier than it has in the past.

The first round of the tournament for all teams that didn’t grab one of the top five bye games will play on Wednesday, and among the match-ups is the seventh seeded New Mexico Lobos and the tenth seeded San Jose State Spartans.

These are two teams that have struggled to be consistent in conference play, but have shown signs of life at times. While the teams have a combined 3-17 record in their last 20 games combined, they have competed at times throughout the season against the top half conference teams. For San Jose State, its most notable conference win was a home win against Nevada and then there was an impressive showing with a near-win at Viejas Arena in which Malachi Flynn hit a difficult buzzer-beating three-point shot to lead the now #5 San Diego State Aztecs to victory.

For New Mexico, their latest win against Utah State in Albuquerque showed that they can hang with an NIT-NCAA tournament quality team when they hold fast to the fundamentals of the game.

Clearly though, these two teams have had their best showings on their home courts. That is especially true for New Mexico, which has a 15-3 home record on the season.

But how will the neutral court affect the two teams?

It’s hard to imagine that the Thomas and Mack Center (affectionately called “Pit West” by Lobo fans) will play to San Jose State’s advantage, but then again, the Lobos have been anything but consistent away from the fabled Pit.

Perhaps that is shown best by the split between the two teams earlier in the year, each coming on a home court. Still New Mexico should have the clear advantage of securing a third game against the Utah State Aggies in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

So what does San Jose State have going for it?

There is one thing the Lobos simply can’t claim. An award to any single player on the roster from either the media or the coaches. Meanwhile, San Jose State, which has had strong performances out of Seneca Knight, who is averaging 16.9 points, 5.8 rebounds 2.3 assists and 1.1 steals in his freshman campaign saw its latest talented young player as a third team All-Mountain West selection.

That said, New Mexico will have to, once more, rely on a fundamentally sound game instead of relying on any given player on the roster.

San Jose State should hope for a whole lot out of Seneca Knight in an effort to make it to the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Tournament for the first time since joining the Mountain West Conference.

Aztecs run away with the awards.

Time to hand out some hardware.

The Mountain West media handed out its awards but we have our own and two sets really. We did a weekly horse race by ranking the best players of the week first to fifth with the best player getting five points down to one point for the fifth player of the week. Those can be found here.

Coach of the Year

Brian Dutcher, San Diego State

Player of the Year

Malachi Flynn, San Diego State

Newcomer of the Year

Malachi Flynn, San Diego State and Jalen Harris, Nevada

This was sort of a surprise and goes along the lines of giving each Harris and Flynn and an award to recognize the two best players in the conference. Unless you are San Diego State head coach Brian Dutcher who said, “Everybody gets a ribbon?” That is a bit harsh. It can come down to that Flynn was Player of the Year due to the Aztecs having an amazing year and then newcomer to Harris’ whose Nevada team while good not as good.

Defensive player of the Year

Cheikh Mbacke Diong, UNLV

First-Team All-Conference

Malachi Flynn, San Diego State
Jalen Harris, Nevada
Derrick Alston Jr, Boise State
Sam Merrill, Utah State
Nico Carvacho, Colorado State

Second-Team All-Conference

Bryce Hamilton, UNLV
Justin Bean, Utah State
Neemias Queta, Utah State
Matt Mitchell, San Diego State
Yanni Wetzel, Wyoming (Tied for 5th)
Seneca Knight, San Jose State (Tied for 5th)

Those first and second teams are not all that different with the one big exception is New Mexico’s JaQuan Lyle making the all-conference team that was awarded on a weekly basis missed the cut. Then there is players like Matt Mitchell who earned only a single vote in the weekly poll but he was second-team for the season-long awards.

The weekly awards benefited those who had great weeks where Mitchell was consistent but not overwhelming which is why for the weekly votes he got so few.

Can anyone play spoiler?

Jeremy and Andrew are back to preview the 2020 Mountain West tournament which begins this week. The two go through the scenarios in the tournament and they both find a soft spot for Colorado State who could sort of play a spoiler in this event. They also go over the various all-conference awards and wonder what is the deal with San Diego State head coach Brian Dutcher who is complaining a lot for a likely No. 1 seed.

Also, all signs point to a two-bid Mountain West tournament, well as long as Utah State doesn’t mess things up.

The opening round is here.

The 2020 Mountain West basketball tournament is set and the first day of competition at the Thomas & Mack features the six through 11 seeds.

These games are a formality as the odds of any of these teams making a tournament run is unlikely, however, New Mexico is in good position to make some noise as they are likely to defeat San Jose State in the opening round game and then get a rematch vs. Utah State who they beat in the season finale.

However, prior to that upset win, the Lobos lost five in a row and had just one win over nine games. Perhaps New Mexico has turned things around and can make it to the semifinals.

Colorado State is the other team that could win one, maybe two games in the tournament as star players can make a difference. The Rams have one of the best players in the league in Nico Carvacho who averaged a double-double this year.

The month of February made it a close one but the Player of the Year watch list results are in, and the winner is….

The staff at the Mountain West Wire wanted to do something a little different this year. We kept track of the top performers from teams around the Mountain West throughout the year and voted on who had the best performances that week.

The process churned out 17 weeks of results, highlighting multiple player’s performances in that time. Overall 31 different players received top-5 votes and every Mountain West team is represented on the list. But without further ado here we go.

[Editor note: As a staff there will be a one-time vote on these same awards, plus more, and it will be interesting to see if they are different because a one or two week surge would help them in these weekly rankings.]

Player of the year: Malachi Flynn, San Diego State (42 total points)

NCAA Basketball: San Diego State at Fresno State

Malachi Flynn has been a major catalyst in the Aztec’s historic 2019-2020 season. His presence on the court this season for a Brian Dutcher team that reached twenty wins last season but lost it’s top-two scorers is more than impressive. Flynn’s leadership has led to a 28-1 (17-1 in MW) regular season finish, top-5 ranking, an at-large bid and maybe most importantly he’s helped make the players around him better.

His numbers weren’t eye popping, but were efficient and made an impact consistently on the best team in the Mountain West. He averaged 17.6 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 5.1 APG & 1.8 SPG in 29 games this season (all starts). Certainly an all-conference worthy stat sheet and his assists and steals per game totals were good enough to lead the entire conference in both categories. Flynn performed at a high level consistently throughout the season and had the best start of any in the conference and kept his level of play just high enough to fend off some other player’s late season surges for the award.

The dagger might have come this weekend in what looked like the battle for Player of the Year against Nevada and Wolf Pack guard Jalen Harris. Flynn helped his team obtain an 83-76 win while scoring 36 points on 13-20 made field goals (65%) while also grabbing 5 rebounds and dishing out five assists. This performance cemented Flynn as the inaugural 2020 Mountain West Wire’s Watch list Player of the Year. Congrats to Malachi and a special thank you to all who participated in the voting process throughout the year.

The rest of the All-Mountain West First team:

Untitled design (98).png

Jalen Harris, Nevada (35 Points)

Sam Merrill, Utah State (20 Points)

Derrick Alston Jr, Boise State(19 Points)

JaQuan Lyle, New Mexico (15 Points)

Untitled design (99).png

Nico Carvacho, Colorado State (12 Points)

Bryce Hamilton, UNLV (12 Points)

Seneca Knight, San Jose State (10 Points)

Jazz Johnson, Nevada (9 Points)

Can anyone challenge SDSU?

The 2020 Mountain West basketball tournament begins on Wednesday with the opening round games. The real focus will be later in the tournament as San Diego State is a huge favorite and looking to lock down a No. 1 seed if they can win the tournament.

The Aztecs have just one loss this year and are in a good position to claim stake to one of the four best teams. The odds that TeamRankings.com place on the tournament which goes round by round are basically chalk with San Diego State given the best odds to win it all at nearly 50 percent. Utah State is the only other team to be given double-digits to claim the Mountain West tournament title.

UNLV has some home-court advantage with these games being played on their home court at the Thomas and Mack. Yet, even with that, their fourth seed is also the odds they are getting to win the whole thing and just a hair behind rival Nevada from these oddsmakers.

If there are any upsets look for them to be in teh bottom half of the bracket.
