Rutgers football: Best five wins of the season

During the 2023 campaign, Rutgers football gave fans plenty of reasons to celebrate.

During the 2023 campaign, Rutgers football gave fans plenty of reasons to celebrate. The Scarlet Knights finished with a 6-6 record and performed better in conference play. Although the last few years have been full of highs and lows, the program took a step forward.

While their success was a team effort, Kyle Monangai and Gavin Wimsatt became players to be reckoned with. Monangai was one of the best running backs in the conference with 1,099 rushing yards and Wimsatt added 1,651 passing yards to his resume. Due their play, the offense was no longer the achilles heel.

Like in years past, the strength of this team continued to be the defense. The Scarlet Knights finished the season with eight interceptions and 19 sacks. As a result, they played better against Big Ten teams.

While Rutgers still has one game left, the 2023 campaign was full of positives for this program. Below are the five wins that stood out the most.

Rutgers football’s Samuel Brown V is getting back to running violently

Samuel Brown V is working his way back from injury for Rutgers.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Samuel Brown has had to endure a tremendous amount this past year, but the Rutgers football running back is getting himself back into a good place in the Rutgers backfield.

On Saturday in a 27-6 loss at No. 11 Penn State, Brown had six carries for 24 yards, a sign of the progress he is making from a difficult end to his freshman season a year ago.

Brown suffered an injury last October that required season-ending surgery. He wasn’t fully able to go in training camp for Rutgers and missed the first game of the season, a win over Northwestern.

Since then, Brown has slowly progressed and seen his impact grow out of the Rutgers backfield.

“He’s starting to get his flow back. He’s running violently again. You know, I thought at the beginning – he didn’t quite have that. same ‘vrooom.’ But it’s back,” Schiano said, using his hand to simulate a takeoff. “We’ll continue to get more work.”

Last season as a true freshman, Brown had 374 rushing yards and a healthy 4.3 yards per carry. He also had three rushing touchdowns.

He is a former four-star running back out of Philadelphia.

Greg Schiano sees Samuel Brown as progressing: ‘He’s getting back to his old self

Rutgers football running back Samuel Brown V could see a bigger role this season for the Scarlet Knights.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Samuel Brown V hasn’t seen the number of carries that he had last year, but the Rutgers football running back appears to be getting close to his old self.

With Kyle Monangai forced to leave Saturday’s game at Iowa with an injury, there might be more reps available for the likes of Brown this Saturday at Penn State.

Brown, who was shelved the second half of the season with his own injury, has slowly been ramped up this season by the coaching staff. Part of the reason why is because of the emergence of Monangai, who is the Big Ten’s leading rusher.

A former four-star running back recruit of Philadelphia, Brown could be poised for a bigger role with two games left in the regular season and then a bowl game for Rutgers.

“I think he’s getting better every day out there, he really is,” head coach Greg Schiano said on Wednesday after practice.

“He missed a long time. So it might not be real-time like, ‘If I missed this much, it takes this much to get ready.

“But there is some equivalency there. I think he’s just going to play more and more as we go. He’s getting back to his old self.”

Brown has 134 rushing yards on 40 carries with two touchdowns this season. Last season, he had 434 rushing yards and two touchdowns as well as averaging 4.3 yards per carry.

Aaron Young, a veteran running back, could also see some more carries this week. Schiano praised Young’s return from his own injuries last season.

“I’m really pleased -he is such an unselfish team guy,” Schiano said.

“That whatever he gets, he does it to the very best of his ability. He’s done some really good things. We’ll expand his role too.”

Samuel Brown V shows his old self with touchdown run on a Star Spangled day

Rutgers football running back Samuel Brown V has a very strong game against Wagner.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — On a day where his father sang the national anthem at SHI Stadium, a strong workload and a second-half touchdown was proof on the afternoon that Samuel Brown V was still there and ready for Rutgers football.

A total of nine carries for 38 yards and a touchdown represented the biggest workload of the season for Brown, whose freshman season was cut short in 2022 due to an injury. But Brown looked a lot like his old self in his carries against Wagner.

Rutgers rolled to a 52-3 win on Saturday with Brown and the offense once again sparkling. No turnovers and domination in terms of time of possession keyed Rutgers to win that puts them at 4-1 (1-1 Big Ten) start to the season.

Following the game, Brown said that he isn’t thinking about the injury at this point in his recovery.

“In the beginning, I would say it was but where I’m at right now, I feel like I’m not thinking about it anymore at all,” Brown said. I’m just going.”

With his heaviest workload of the season coming on Saturday, Brown is going to be relatively fresh as Rutgers faces the gauntlet of the Big Ten season. Up first for Rutgers is next Saturday at Wisconsin.

The advantage to him slowly being rolled along this season is that he is not as worn down heading into the most physical part of the year.

“I would say definitely, you know, since I’ve had a slow build up my body hasn’t taken as much of a beating,” Brown said.

“So I feel like it’s really good especially as we ramp up into the Big Ten seasons.”

On Saturday before the game, Brown’s father, Samuel Brown IV, sang the national anthem. The stirring rendition came as a bit of a surprise to the Rutgers running back, who wasn’t able to hear his father sing The Star Spangled Banner.

That’s because he was in the tunnel with his teammates.

“There’s a video – I mean, I’ll see my parents after this and hear what they had to say about it or if they caught it on video,” Brown said.

The Rutgers sophomore said he has not inherited his father’s ability to sing.

Rutgers football: Why didn’t Samuel Brown V and Aaron Young play in the season opener?

Rutgers football held out Samuel Brown V and Aaron Young on Sunday.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Samuel Brown V and Aaron Young did not play for Rutgers football on Sunday in a 24-7 win over Northwestern. Head coach Greg Schiano said after the game that both players are expected to contribute to the team soon.

Brown, who practiced this week, was ready to go if needed but the sophomore running back wasn’t called upon in what was a borderline dominant game from Rutgers.

Named the starting running back at the midpoint of last season, Brown suffered a foot injury in a win over Indiana where he ran for 101 rushing yards (on 28 carries).

He was announced as questionable on Sunday morning in a report from Pete Thamel.

“Sam and Aaron are both going to be okay but they just weren’t ready. Sam probably in a pinch could have gone, but he hasn’t practiced very much,” Schiano said after their game.

“He seemed to be good at the beginning, and then, you know, we had a little setback, but I think we are back on track now with him. Aaron had something just late in the week. He was all set to go,”

Neither running back was needed due to the yeoman-like effort of Kyle Monangai. He did a little bit of everything in the Rutgers win, including delivering a crunching block to set up a key third-down conversion.

With 4:05 left in the third quarter, Monangai went left, bounced out to a hole on the right side, then made a juke to get himself into the open field for a 1-5 yard touchdown run.

His touchdown capped off a nine-play, 60-yard touchdown drive and put Rutgers up 24-0.

In 2022, Monangai had 445 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 109 carries. He also had six catches for 31 yards.

Rutgers limited Northwestern to 201 yards of total offense in Sunday’s Big Ten win. In turn, they didn’t turn the ball over and held possession for 37:59.

Report: Samuel Brown V is questionable for Rutgers against Northwestern

Rutgers football running back Samuel Brown is questionable for Sunday’s game.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Rutgers football running Samuel Brown V is questionable for Sunday’s season opener against Northwestern. Senior running back Aaron Young is out for the game.

The report, from ESPN’s Pete Thamel, specifies that Brown has a foot injury.

Brown suffered a foot injury last season in a win over Indiana where he ran for 101 rushing yards (on 28 carries). He didn’t practice during the spring season or play in the annual Scarlet-White spring game.

Last season as a true freshman, Brown had 343 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He took over the starting running back job during midseason, only to get injured weeks later.

Young missed the first half of the 2022 season with his own injury. He returned to play three games.

Last season, he rushed for 38 yards on 11 carries. Young had one reception for 11 yards and a touchdown.

How Basketball helped Samuel Brown V develop at running back

Samuel Brown says his background in basketball helps him on the football field.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Last season, Samuel Brown V did more than just flash his potential for Rutgers football. The true freshman showed that he wasn’t just the future of the Rutgers backfield, he was also very much a star in the present.

And that potential was born on the basketball court for the now Rutgers standout running back

Brown, a former four-star recruit as a running back, had a solid freshman year at Rutgers. He had 343 rushing yards and three touchdowns in 2022 despite missing the second half of the season due to a foot injury.

In high school at LaSalle (Philadelphia, PA), Brown was a dual-sport athlete who excelled in both football and basketball (he was an All-Catholic League selection in both sports). Basketball, he said, was his first love.

And he sees the impact of the sport when he is out on the field.

“I would just say basketball is a big part of that having to be patient and you know, basketball played point guard, so having to make different reads and, having to be patient with everybody out on the field, especially with your blocks developing,” Brown said.

“You know, there’s certain things that you have to read especially with the defense.”

Following last season’s foot injury, Brown continues to gain strength and recover.

“It was definitely tough but you have to stay strong mentally. And I feel like I’ve been doing a good job of that,” Brown said on Monday following practice.

“I’ve had a lot of support, you know, from the team, the training staff, doctors, and everybody. They’ve been keeping me up. And,I just took the time to improve, watching film, getting my knowledge of the game a lot better.”

Rutgers running back Samuel Brown V could have a bigger role in 2023

Rutgers running back Samuel Brown V made a great first impression as a freshman.

The 2022 football season was full of ups and downs for the Scarlet Knights. While the offense struggled, one bright spot was Samuel Brown V. During his freshman season, the talented running back battled injuries, but he made the most of his opportunities when he was on the field. As long as he stays healthy, he could have a more significant role this fall.

In seven games, the Philadelphia native rushed for 383 yards while averaging 4.3 yards a carry. That was the second most on Rutgers, as Kyle Monangia led the way with 459 yards in 12 games. Had the La Salle High School product stayed healthy, the leaderboard might have been flipped.

Additionally, Brown V led Rutgers in rushing touchdowns with three and rushing yards per game with 53.43. His best game of the season came against Indiana, as he recorded a career-high 101 yards while finding the endzone once. The Rutgers offense looked different without him on the field, as the running game was less explosive.

As the Scarlet Knights look to post a winning record for the first time under Greg Schiano, Brown V is an important piece. Having him in the lineup takes some pressure off the passing game and allows Rutgers to be more creative offensively. That will be crucial during the 2023 campaign, as Rutgers has the ninth-hardest schedule in college football, according to ESPN.

While football season is still months away, Rutgers has plenty to prove. Brown V will be one player that this team relies on, and if he can build on what he did as a freshman, then the offense should take a step forward.

Rutgers football: Last week, Samuel Brown V was expected to be back. Why is he now out for the year?

Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano fleshes out what happened with star running back Samuel Brown V.

A week ago, Rutgers football starting running back Samuel Brown V stood inside the Hale Center and said he expected to be ready to play.

Instead, word filtered out on Saturday afternoon that Brown was going to miss the rest of the season due to injury.

It was quite a sudden change of narrative from what was anticipated about the direction of Brown’s injury. The true freshman running back was injured in the fourth quarter of last Saturday’s 24-17 win over Indiana. It was a game where he finished with 101 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Rutgers could have used Brown and his powerful running style in Saturday’s 31-0 loss at Minnesota. Had Brown been able to play and get the start, this game would have been his first career start in the Big Ten.

And after the Indiana win, Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano sounded a bit optimistic that Brown was headed in the right direction regarding his injury.

[lawrence-related id=20260]

“A lot changed. Contrary to some opinions that like, we were trying to keep it hush, Sam we really thought was OK – we thought he was going to be OK,” Schiano told reporters after the game.

“Then each day, one test led to another test led to another test. These tests are kind of the way that it happens in the order to get to the conclusion that we have and that happened at some point on Thursday. When we made the final decision on Thursday night that he would get the surgery. So he’s going to go for surgery next week.

“It’s sad for him, he had kind of a great climb and had a really good game last week and to have it…that’s football.”

Brown was named the Rutgers starting running back in the lead-up to last week’s game against Indiana.

A former four-star recruit, Brown finishes his freshman season with 374 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 86 carries.

Greg Schiano provides an update on Rutgers football running back Samuel Brown V

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano gives a health update on running back Samuel Brow.

Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano said that freshman running back Samuel Brown V

Brown was injured in his first collegiate start, the freshman running back putting in a very impressive showing in a 24-17 win over Indiana. On 28 carries, Brown had 101 rushing yards and a touchdown to key a pragmatic Rutgers to the home win.

With the win, Rutgers improved to 4-3 (1-3 Big Ten) and travels to face Minnesota this Saturday.

Brown was injured in the fourth quarter of the game and did not return to the playing field.

On Saturday, Brown announced that his foot injury was fine. Schiano followed that up on Saturday with what was an overall encouraging update on the status of a player who might be a very important piece of the offense moving forward.

“Sam has a couple more things to do with the doctors, but I think we’re going to be okay there,” Schiano told reporters on Monday.

Brown is a former four-star recruit from LaSalle (Wyndmoor, PA). According to Rivals, he was the No. 7 recruit in Pennsylvania. He held numerous Power Five offers including Arizona, State, Baylor, Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Tennessee and Texas A&M among others.
