Texas A&M freshman defensive lineman will enter the transfer portal

Texas A&M freshman DL Samu Taumanupepe has entered his name in the transfer portal after two seasons

Texas A&M’s 2024 season ended at a disappointing 8-4 and 5-3 in SEC play after losing three out of their last four games, including the season finale 17-7 loss to rival Texas in the revival of the Lone Star Showdown.

On Wednesday, the Aggies signed 24 players in the 2025 recruiting class, including flipping two former Missouri commits, five-star offensive tackle Lamont Rogers, and four-star running back Jamorian Morrow, while five-star wide receiver Jerome Myles surprisingly signed, squashing previous reports.

However, eight players have now entered the transfer portal, led by quarterbacks Conner Weigman and Jaylen Henderson, while three defensive linemen who received little playing time, including Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy, Malick Sylla, and now Samu Taumanupepe.

Over his last two seasons, the 350-pound lineman appeared in less than five games. He was virtually buried on the depth chart, while his overall fit within head coach Mike Elko and defensive coordinator Jay Bateman’s system never meshed.

Taumanupepe has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

The Longhorns are going big game hunting in 2023

Texas is still making efforts to sure up the future of their trenches even after bringing in a very impressive haul on both sides of the line in 2022.

Both Bo Davis and Kyle Flood, who was recognized as the Big 12 recruiter of the year, got their money’s worth in recruiting this past season, and Davis is looking to get on the good side of a recruit who is likely one of if not the largest prospects in the nation.

The Longhorns were just the second Power 5 team to offer defensive tackle the big-bodied Samu Taumanupepe out of Humble, Texas. He offers great size at 6-foot-3 and 380 pounds and has been very productive earning 21-6A first-team all-district selection as a junior. While the 2023 class rankings have yet to be released, Taumanupepe will surely be one of the most coveted big men in the class.
