Good, Bad and Ugly: Can Dan Mullen survive Florida’s empty win over Samford?

The Gators Wire staff dissects a game that should not have been nearly as close as it was.

Florida football took a punch to the face in the first half of its home game against the Samford Bulldogs, a Football Championship Series school that came to Gainesville with a 4-5 record that matched the Gators’ so far this season. Trailing at halftime by a touchdown after allowing a ridiculous 42 points, the defense stepped up in the final 30 minutes and got a few key stops while quarterback Emory Jones carried the team with a career performance for the win.

What was evidenced from the results we saw on Saturday was that the firing of defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and offensive lines coach John Hevesy made little if any tangible improvement to this squad — there could be an argument that it was even worse on defense, somehow. The boobirds came out early in the Swamp and by the end of the fourth quarter, the seat under head coach Dan Mullen reached a searing heat with a large segment of the fanbase calling for his dismissal.

The staff here at Gators Wire has their own takes, which we present in our weekly Good, Bad and Ugly feature. Read below our respective breakdowns of what was nearly a most calamitous disaster.

Check out the Gator Nation’s hot takes after the rough Samford win

A look at all of the hot takes on Twitter after the seriously disconcerting win over Samford.

They say in sports that a win is a win, but this season Florida football has put that adage to the test with a few shaky victories during its 2021 campaign. The Gators’ latest triumph — a 70-52 shootout against FCS opponent the Samford Bulldogs — represents one of the emptiest wins ever on the hallowed grounds of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

The W did snap a three-game schneid — a losing streak that led to the firing of defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and offensive line coach John Hevesy after the embarrassing loss to South Carolina last weekend. The moves came as head coach Dan Mullen‘s coaching hot seat has seen the dial turned up to a near-raging inferno in recent days.

That fire has reached towering peaks on Saturday in what was essentially a loss for the Gators in most ways except for on the scoreboard. Inflamed with the fervor of frustration, Florida fans vented their emotions on Twitter as they watch their beloved football program go down like the Hindenberg.

Here is a look a the hottest, spiciest takes from Twitter as well as a few lame jokes following the game. Oh the humanity, indeed.

Four takeaways from Florida’s close call against Samford

Florida survived to beat the Bulldogs 70-52, but it wasn’t a performance that inspired much confidence in the coaching staff moving forward.

Well, that was a football game.

Florida emerged victorious against FCS opponent Samford and avoided suffering its second loss against a team from the lower level of Division I since 1946, but it sure wasn’t pretty.

The Bulldogs may as well have been an SEC team, because they brutalized the UF defense harder than anyone else has this season. They totaled 530 yards of offense and scored 42 points in the first half alone, taking a seven-point lead into the break.

The Gators offense ultimately proved too much to overcome, outscoring Samford 35-10 in the second half en route to a 70-52 win that would have been much more acceptable if it came from coach Mike White‘s basketball team.

While UF’s 717 yards proved to be enough to get back to 5-5 on the season, it shouldn’t give the team much confidence heading into the final stretch of the season against Missouri and Florida State.

Here are the takeaways from Florida’s ugliest showing of the season.

Florida outlasts Samford in game that featured 122 points

Florida survived an inept performance against Samford

That’s one way to look at things, we guess.

After Florida defeated Samford, 70-52, in a college football, not basketball game on Saturday, Gators coach Dan Mullen offered this:

The teams combined for 880 passing yards and 9 touchdowns.

The 5-5 Gators, who are struggling mightily in 2021, were 35.5-point favorites coming in and the over/under was 68.5, so they covered that number by themselves.

Emery Jones accounted for 7 touchdowns, 6 through the air.

On the “defensive” side for Florida, it gave up its most points (42) in a half against any opponent.

Florida had won its previous four games against FCS opponents by a combined score of 199-16. The Bulldogs scored touchdowns on five of their first six drives and led 42-28 late in the second quarter.

The Gators rebounded, outscoring Samford 42-10 after that.

Halftime Takeaways: Florida in danger of losing to FCS Samford

Things are not going as planned in the Swamp this week. FCS Samford leads Florida at the half.

Florida is officially on upset alert at halftime against Samford. The Bulldogs have outplayed Florida and lead the Gators 42-35 at halftime.

Florida’s offense hasn’t had too much trouble scoring, but the defense has been arguably worse than it was against South Carolina last week. Of course, head coach Dan Mullen fired his defensive coordinator earlier in the week leading many to ask if that was truly the problem.

Samford only punted once in the half and scored at will for the most part. Quarterback Liam Welch exploded for nearly 300 yards in the air and added some more offense with his legs.

The loss to South Carolina looked like it was rock bottom for Florida last week, but it looks like the program could reach new lows if things don’t change at the half.

The Gator Nation gets hyped ahead of the Samford Bulldogs game

A look at how Gators fans are hyping up ahead of the Florida-Samford game in Gainesville.

It has been over a month since the Gator Nation has been able to watch its team play in the Swamp, and let me tell you, it was a rough stretch for the Orange and Blue to say the least. Nonetheless, the Florida faithful remain committed to the best school in the nation and continue to root for their beloved gridiron gang.

UF has lost three-straight games to fall below the .500 mark for the first time in the Dan Mullen era coming into Saturday’s matchup against the FCS Samford Bulldogs. However, these tough times are not quite as evident in the excitement that has been building up on social media ahead of the game, which despite an early start has been hopping all morning.

Here is a look at how the Gator Nation is getting revved up on Twitter for Saturday’s midday matchup in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium using the #GoGators hashtag.

Gameday is here! We are just a couple of hours away from kickoff in the Swamp where Florida football is hosting FCS opponent the Samford Bulldogs. According to the Tipico Sportsbook, the Gators are favored by 35.5 points over the Bulldogs, with the over-under set at 68.5 points. Florida’s moneyline is set at -10000 while Samford’s is at +1500 as of 9:30 a.m. EST Saturday morning.

Kickoff is set for noon EST on Saturday in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Florida. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network+, livestreamed on the ESPN app and can be heard on the Gators Radio Network.

How to watch Florida football vs. Samford Bulldogs

Want to know how to follow Saturday’s Florida vs. Samford game? Here’s everything you need to keep up with the action.

Florida football hosts the Samford Bulldogs on Saturday looking to snap its three-game losing streak. The FCS opponent is the Gators’ first game in the Swamp in over a month and represents the weakest opponent on the 2021 schedule. The two have never met before on the college gridiron in their current iterations, but have actually played twice exactly a century ago when Samford was going by a different name.

The Gators will have two fewer faces on the sidelines as the program released defensive coordinator Todd Grantham as well as offensive line coach John Hevesy after last week’s loss; linebackers coach Christian Robinson will take over the defensive play-calling.

Below, we have everything you need to know to follow Saturday’s action in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for noon EST.

Here’s how The Athletic’s staff thinks Florida will fare against Samford

Florida’s loss to South Carolina was unexpected, but The Athletic thinks the Gators get back on track this week.

Florida couldn’t get it done against one of the worst teams in the Southeastern Conference last week as the Gators fell to South Carolina, 40-17.

Head coach Dan Mullen parted ways with defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and offensive line coach John Hevesy following the game. Mullen said that the moves came before the season’s end in hopes of energizing the team to a strong finish. First up is Samford, an FCS program that Florida is favored to beat by more than 30 points.

Anything other than a win would be disastrous for Mullen and company, but The Athletic’s staff sees Florida taking this one easily. Here’s what they had to say ahead of Saturday’s must-win game.

Here are the odds for Florida football’s game vs. Samford on Saturday

How big of the win do the odds expect for Florida against Samford? Find out here.

Florida football returns to the comfy confines of the Swamp on Saturday after a month away from Gainesville including a bye-week. Now riding a three-game losing streak, the Gators look to right the course against a Colonial Athletic Association opponent — the Samford Bulldogs — to earn their first win since beating the Vanderbilt Commodores for homecoming on Oct. 9.

According to the Tipico Sportsbook, the Gators are favored by 31.5 points over the Bulldogs, with the over-under set at 69.5 points. Florida’s moneyline is set at -4000 while South Carolina’s is at +1200 as of 11:30 EST Friday.

Kickoff is set for noon EST on Saturday in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Florida. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network+, livestreamed on the ESPN app and can be heard on the Gators Radio Network.
