UFC 297 video: Sam Patterson squeezes Yohan Lainesse into submission

Sam Patterson made quick work of Yohan Lainesse at UFC 297.

[autotag]Sam Patterson[/autotag]’s UFC debut didn’t go as he planned, but his second opportunity was more in line with his blueprint.

On the prelims of UFC 297, Patterson (11-2-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) made quick work of fellow welterweight [autotag]Yohan Lainesse[/autotag] (9-3 MMA, 1-3 UFC) with a rear-naked choke submission at 2:03 of Round 1.

In what was his divisional debut, Patterson was patient on the feet. He grabbed hold of a front headlock on Lainesse before dragging it to the canvas. On the mat, Patterson worked to the back and eventually sunk in a rear-naked choke. Lainesse strained and strained – and eventually tapped.

Patterson, 27, was a standout prospect who earned his UFC shot through “Dana White’s Contender Series.” However, his UFC debut (which was at lightweight) ended with a brutal knockout defeat at the hands of Yanal Ashmouz.

According to the broadcast, Lainesse fought out his contract at UFC 297. He went 1-3 during that time, with three stoppage losses.

UFC 286 video: Yanal Ashmoz mid-air punch leads to woozy Sam Patterson grappling referee Marc Goddard

Officials rushed to aide Sam Patterson as the stunned fighter grappled with Marc Goddard after a brutal Yanal Ashmoz knockout.

A brutal knockout on the UFC 286 prelims left one semi-conscious fighter attempting to grapple with referee Marc Goddard.

[autotag]Yanal Ashmoz[/autotag] entered enemy territory an underdog at UFC 286 and he exited with a nasty knockout added to his highlight reel. In 75 seconds, Ashmoz (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) finished [autotag]Sam Patterson[/autotag] (10-2-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) with punches to pick up his first promotional win. The event took place Saturday at The O2 in London.

After catching a Patterson leg kick, Ashmoz landed a two-punch combination on his mid-air opponent. Patterson crashed to the canvas and was OK for a slight window until Ashmoz pounded consciousness out of him. Goddard dove in to save Patterson, right as he went out cold.

As Ashmoz celebrated his victory as a +240 underdog (on average, per BestFightOdds), Patterson struggled to regain his bearings. As commission officials and medical staff attended to Patterson, the woozy fighter grabbed hold of Goddard in what appeared to be a clinch attempt. Eventually, Patterson came to.

The stoppage was criticized by the broadcast, as commentator Jon Anik spoke highly of Goddard’s typical officiating – but said he thought the leash was too long on this particular stoppage.

Israel’s Ashmoz kicks off his UFC career in style and remains undefeated. Saturday’s knockout was the fourth of his career. Ashmoz trains under former Khabib Nurmagomedov coach Murat Keshtov.

Patterson, who signed with the UFC after a Dana White’s Contender Series win in 2022, loses for the first time since November 2017. Both of his professional losses have come by knockout.

Sam Patterson taking inspiration from Leon Edwards’ U.K. home-grown success before UFC 286

Now that Sam Patterson’s UFC career is about to begin, he’s looking to a recent champion for some inspiration.

LONDON – Now that [autotag]Sam Patterson[/autotag]’s UFC career is about to begin, he’s looking to a recent champion for some inspiration.

Patterson (10-1-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC), who won his way into the promotion through Dana White’s Contender Series this past fall, takes on fellow UFC newcomer Yanal Ashmoz (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) on the UFC 286 prelims Saturday at The O2 in London. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPNews and early prelims on ESPN+.

Patterson, from England, has found some motivation from Leon Edwards, who puts his welterweight title on the line for the first time in the main event in a rematch with former champion Kamaru Usman. Instead of departing England for bigger training opportunities in the U.S., Edwards stayed with who got him there and won the belt with a dramatic comeback head-kick knockout.

Patterson hopes for a similar path.

“I made a point in this camp to stay with my team,” Patterson said at Wednesday’s UFC 286 media day. “What we’ve done has worked. I got here with the team around me. I feel like since Leon has said about doing it, it’s become a thing that he has proved that you do not need to go to the States or these big gyms to get to the UFC or even stay in the UFC. And I look forward to Saturday night showing that I got to the UFC, and I’m going to win in the UFC with the team I have around me.

“Don’t get me wrong – I look forward to, in the future, traveling around and adding to my game, learning from other gyms and stuff like that. But that will be under David Lee. Dave will tell me which one we’re going to and help me level up the game. But for this one being in my hometown, I didn’t want it to be a narrative of me traveling somewhere else. I kind of want this to be we got to the UFC and we won in the UFC with my team from Wallford – Team Crossface under David Lee.”
