The CEO of Sack Nation is looking at a hefty incentive should he notch a sack when the Kansas City Chiefs face the Denver Broncos in Week 18.
Our friend Mark Schofield over at Touchdown Wire took a look at all the players in the NFL who are on the cusp of reaching a pay incentive in the final week of the regular season. Only one player for the Chiefs showed up on the list, DL Chris Jones, who is one sack away from a pretty big incentive. Here’s what Schofield had to say about Jones’ pending payday:
“Jones has a clause in his contract that pays him a bonus of $1.25 million if he reaches ten sacks on a season. He enters the final weekend of the year sitting at nine sacks. Interestingly enough, if he reaches this goal he might want to treat new teammate Melvin Ingram to something nice. The Chiefs acquired Ingram in a trade prior to the deadline, back on November 2, 2021. Since the acquisition, which allowed Steve Spagnuolo to slide Jones back to the interior of the defensive line, Jones has tallied six total sacks.”
Jones has appeared in 13 games for Kansas City this season, missing time due to a wrist injury early in the season and missing a game on the Reserve/COVID-19 list late in the season. He’s still managed to lead the team in sacks and pressures this season, and as Schofield noted, his performance improved in the sack department with the addition of Melvin Ingram.
Jones didn’t notch a sack in the first meeting between the Chiefs and Broncos, but he did manage one QB hit, four hurries and two passes deflected. Hopefully, for his sake, he can manage to turn at least one of those pressures into sacks this time around. The Broncos have already ruled out one of their starting interior linemen in Dalton Risner, so that should help his cause.
