KNOXVILLE — University of Tennessee football is rich in tradition and Vols Wire will explore the history of the program by examining each head coach’s tenure at UT.
This installment will focus on the 1904 season and head coach S.D. Crawford.
Crawford was only the Vols head coach for one season in 1904, and under his guidance Tennessee went 3-5-1.
Crawford holds a significant place in the program’s history as his team was the first Volunteers squad to beat longtime and traditional rival Alabama.
The 5-0 victory over the Crimson Tide on Nov. 24 was part of a two-game winning streak to end the season. Prior to the historic win over Alabama in Birmingham, the Vols beat Grant 23-0.
UT also posted a season-opening win over Maryville at home as it blanked the Scots, 17-0. The Vols and Nashville played to a 0-0 tie.
In 1904, the Vols lost to a pair of teams that had long been thorns in its sides as they fell to Vanderbilt and Sewanee. They also lost to Georgia Tech, Clemson and Cincinnati.
