Former LSU safety Ryan Yaites transfers to Cal

Former LSU safety Ryan Yaites is heading to the ACC.

Former LSU safety [autotag]Ryan Yaites[/autotag] found his new home on Monday, telling On3 Sports he’s committing to Cal.

The sophomore safety entered the transfer portal in the spring window after just one year at LSU. He played 124 defensive snaps with the Tigers, notching seven tackles. According to PFF, he allowed five catches in 66 coverage snaps.

Yaites committed to LSU in 2022, choosing the Tigers over Oklahoma. As a recruit, ESPN ranked him as the 11th-best safety in the country. He was the 276th overall recruit in On3’s Industry Ranking.

Now, the Texas native will head out west and join Cal as the Golden Bears head to the ACC.

LSU hasn’t lost a ton to the portal this year, but Yaites would have been a solid piece with Brian Kelly’s program going through a defensive rebuild. Between personnel and coaching changes, a lot will look different on that side of the ball in 2024.

Greg Brooks Jr. out for Arkansas game, Brian Kelly says

Greg Brooks Jr. was unavailable against Mississippi State with what Brian Kelly called a “medical emergency” after the game.

LSU will be without starting nickel [autotag]Greg Brooks Jr.[/autotag] when it hosts Arkansas in Week 4 on Saturday, coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said Monday.

Brooks was not with the team during Saturday’s 41-14 win over Mississippi State as he is dealing with what Kelly referred to after the game as a “medical emergency.”

Speaking to the media Monday, Kelly couldn’t provide many details about Brooks’ condition other than to say he will not be available when the Tigers take on the Razorbacks.

“I don’t have a lot that I can report on Greg, it is a family matter so I am not going to speak on the family’s behalf,” Kelly said. “If there’s anything I can get to you further after I speak with the family, we’ll certainly give you the information. But Greg is dealing with a medical emergency, and he will not be available.”

Without Brooks, LSU started transfer [autotag]Andre Sam[/autotag] at safety with [autotag]Sage Ryan[/autotag] and true freshman [autotag]Ryan Yaites[/autotag] seeing reps at nickel. That dynamic will likely continue into the near future with Brooks’ status unclear.

Top-50 cornerback locks in return trip to LSU for game vs. Alabama

Javien Toviano is one of LSU’s top remaining uncommitted targets.

When the Tigers face Alabama on Saturday with the SEC West potentially on the line, they will have one of the top remaining prospects on their 2023 recruiting board in attendance.

Martin (Arlington, Texas) cornerback [autotag]Javien Toviano[/autotag], a four-star prospect in the 2023 class, has set a return trip to Baton Rouge for an unofficial visit this weekend as LSU hosts the Crimson Tide in a top-15 battle.

A top-50 prospect in the country and the No. 7 cornerback, per the 247Sports Composite, Toviano was previously on campus in September for an official visit the weekend of LSU’s matchup against Southern. Following that visit, he received two Crystal Balls for LSU, including one from 247Sports director of football recruiting Steve Wiltfong.

The Tigers are also a heavy favorite for Toviano according to On3, which also has him as a top-50 prospect, though it lists him as a safety. Toviano said recently that he is close to making a decision but wants to take his remaining official visits before deciding.

Toviano would be the fourth commit from Texas in the 2023 class as he would join safety [autotag]Ryan Yaites[/autotag], receiver [autotag]Kyle Parker[/autotag] and the most recent player to join the class, linebacker [autotag]Christian Brathwaite[/autotag].

LSU’s 23-man 2023 recruiting class currently ranks seventh overall per the 247Sports Composite and fifth per On3. The Tigers will hope to push for a consensus top-five class down the stretch.

LSU the favorite to land five-star safety

The Tigers’ 2023 class may be about to get even better.

[autotag]Javien Toviano[/autotag] is a five-star safety on Rivals and a four-star on every other recruiting site. He is a 6-foot, 185-pound cornerback from Arlington, Texas, where he plays for Martin High School.

The Warriors have started the 2022 season 2-1 after losing a non-district game to Allen last week 27-16. Per On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine, LSU has become the favorite to land the talented safety.

The Tigers currently have 22 commitments for the 2023 recruiting class, which ranks seventh in the country at the moment. If Toviano were to commit, he would join [autotag]Michael Daughtery[/autotag], [autotag]Ryan Yaites[/autotag] and [autotag]Kylin Jackson[/autotag] as safety commits for the 2023 class.

Brian Kelly has done a great job so far of recruiting really good players to come to the Bayou next season, and he’s still working on landing even more.

Looking at LSU’s commits so far in 2023 class

A running tracker of every commit the Tigers have landed this cycle.

In the words of Alice Cooper, school’s out for summer. But when it comes to recruiting, there is no off-season.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] is known for always having great recruiting classes every year. His first recruiting class at LSU was ranked as the No. 7 class in the country last year, and he’s already off to a hot start for the 2023 class.

So far, the Tigers have seven commits for this class, and that list is growing by the day. So, let’s take a look at all of the athletes that have committed to playing for LSU in 2023.

Disclaimer: Even though these kids are currently committed to LSU until they put pen to paper and sign their name on the dotted line, they can change their minds and play elsewhere. This list will be updated as more players commit.

Oklahoma Sooners offer LSU commit DB Ryan Yaites from Denton Guyer

The Oklahoma Sooners offered defensive back and 2023 LSU commit Ryan Yaites out of Denton Guyer High School i Texas.

The Oklahoma Sooners missed out on safety Tyler Turner, who committed to Oregon this week, but that won’t slow down [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] and his defensive staff. Leaving nothing to chance, the Sooners have offered four-star defensive back [autotag]Ryan Yaites[/autotag] from Denton Guyer High School in Texas.

Yaites has been committed to LSU since the middle of April, but that won’t keep Venables and [autotag]Brandon Hall[/autotag] from pursuing the Texas product. Another thing to note is that Yaites is the high school teammate of Oklahoma’s five-star quarterback commit [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag].

ESPN, 247Sports Composite, and On3’s Consensus all consider Yaites a four-star defensive back prospect and he ranks as one of the top 100 players in the talent-rich state of Texas.

Yaites is a versatile defensive back prospect that lined up primarily as an outside cornerback for Guyer. He’s a bump-and-run corner that does a great job using his length and athleticism to challenge receivers at the catch point. Even when the WR has made the catch, Yaites shows a strong ability to rip the ball out to cause the incompletion. He’s a very good tackler who consistently wraps up and drives the ball carrier to the ground. In the run or screen game, he shows great discipline to set the edge and not let the ball carrier get to the boundary. Great eye discipline and ability to read the play allows him to go from cover player to run defender quickly, which helps him make plays in the run game.

If the Sooners were able to flip Ryan Yaites from LSU, it would be a huge win and another fantastic defensive prospect to add to [autotag]Kaleb Spencer[/autotag], [autotag]Erik McCarty[/autotag], and [autotag]Kade McIntyre[/autotag].

Recapping LSU’s recent recruiting wins under Brian Kelly

The recruiting trail has been heating up for Brian Kelly and LSU. Here are all the names they have landed over the last few weeks.

After signing day in February, recruiting was slow for LSU. [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and his staff were still settling in as the calendar turned to the 2023 signing class.

Recently, things on the trail have heated up again. It’s usually what happens this time of year as coaches try to get as much work done on those next classes before they have to deal with the daily grind of the season in the fall.

LSU has picked up a few commits over the last couple of weeks and has even more visits lined up.

It’s a promising sign for Kelly’s program. Despite the current situation and how the last two seasons have played out, recruits are interested in coming to LSU. There’s real momentum right now and if the coaching staff can keep it up, the 2023 class will be in a great position.

It’s not just the fact that Kelly is picking up commits, but they’re coming at positions of need from states like Georgia and Texas, two places that you need to be able to pluck some players from to compete at the top of the SEC.

Here’s a rundown of each of the new additions to the class.

BREAKING: Four-star safety commits to LSU

LSU picked up its fourth commitment in the 2023 cycle on Friday morning.

The Tigers have added another piece to their currently small 2023 class.

[autotag]Ryan Yaites[/autotag], a six-foot-one, 175-pound four-star safety from Denton, Texas, announced his commitment to play for coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and LSU via his Twitter account on Friday morning.

Yaites becomes the fourth commit from the class of 2023 and the second safety to commit. The other one is Michael Daugherty, a safety from Loganville, Georgia, who committed earlier this week. According to Rivals.com, Yaites was ranked as the No. 73 player in the country, the No. 11 safety, and the No. 8 player in the State of Texas.

Yaites was a Texas District 5-6A first-team selection at cornerback as a junior; as he helped Guyer reach the Class 6A-Division II state title game.

For the 2022 recruiting class, Kelly looked to the transfer portal and plucked away some of the best defensive backs available in [autotag]Jarrick Bernard-Converse[/autotag], [autotag]Greg Brooks Jr.[/autotag], [autotag]Mekhi Garner[/autotag], and [autotag]Joe Foucha[/autotag].

For the class of 2023, so far he has put more of an emphasis on prep talent to add to a secondary that is full of elite players. LSU’s class currently ranks No. 24 in the nation, per the 247Sports Composite.
