Ryan Spann claims he hasn’t watched tape on Bogdan Guskov ahead of UFC on ESPN 55 co-main bout

Ryan Spann says he hasn’t watched much film on his opponent Bogdan Guskov ahead of Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 55.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Ryan Spann[/autotag] took a non-traditional approach for his upcoming fight.

Spann (21-9 MMA, 7-4 UFC) takes on [autotag]Bogdan Guskov[/autotag] (15-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) this Saturday in the co-main event of UFC on ESPN 55 at the UFC Apex (ESPN, ESPN+), and he claims he hasn’t watched much film or studied his opponent in preparation for his return to the octagon – something not seen often in MMA.

“I haven’t really watched too much film, so I don’t know what kind of skills he’s going to bring,” Spann said at Wednesday’s media day. “People can change. He’s here for a reason. He’s against me for a reason. I’m sure he’s good, but to say that I’ve watched him or have any thoughts on him – I’m just going to go out there and do what I do.”

Spann hasn’t fought since August when he lost a close, split decision to veteran Anthony Smith. He purposely took some time off to work and develop his own skills. The 32-year-old is confident in his game, and believes he just needs to be himself to get his hand raised.

“I’m just expecting to be present and what comes from that, comes from that,” Spann said.

UFC fight card lineup announced for April 27, including Ryan Spann vs. Bogdan Guskov

Ryan Spann has twice fought Anthony Smith – and now the UFC has given him his doppelganger.

The full fight card for the UFC Fight Night event April 27 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas has been revealed.

With a flyweight main event between Manel Kape and Matheus Nicolau already announced, the co-main event will feature a light heavyweight showdown between [autotag]Ryan Spann[/autotag] and [autotag]Bogdan Guskov[/autotag].

Promotion officials made the 13-fight lineup official Thursday. Spann (21-9 MMA, 7-4 UFC) vs. Guskov (15-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) was one of two fights not previously reported. Spann, 32, looks to snap a two-fight skid as he enters the matchup off consecutive losses to Nikita Krylov and Anthony Smith. Now, Spann faces the man many people think resembles Smith.

Guskov, 31, has split his UFC appearances to date. He made his promotional debut against ranked opposition in Volkan Oezdemir and lost the bout by first-round rear-naked choke. In February, Guskov picked up his first UFC victory with a first-round knockout of Zac Pauga.

The UFC Fight Night lineup for April 27 includes:

  • Manel Kape vs. Matheus Nicolau
  • Bogdan Guskov vs. Ryan Spann

UFC Fight Night 225 results: Anthony Smith beats Ryan Spann again – this time by split decision

Anthony Smith got the best of Ryan Spann once again, but had to work for it.

[autotag]Anthony Smith[/autotag] got the best of [autotag]Ryan Spann[/autotag] once again, but had to work for it.

In the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 225 at at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore, Smith (37-18 MMA, 12-8 UFC) edged Spann (21-9 MMA, 7-4 UFC) out by split decision in their light heavyweight bout. He was able to quickly submit Spann in their first fight in September 2021, but had to battle through some adversity to get his hand raised the second time.

Smith came out with a muay Thai stance. He hurt Spann with big leg kicks, and followed it up a solid right hand. Spann fired back with a right hand of his own. Smith took Spann down, and worked for an arm triangle choke, but Spann was able to get up.

In Round 2, Spann tagged Smith with a counter left, and jumped in with a flying knee to the body. Smith was visibly hurt as his eye started swelling up. Smith’s left eye was completely swollen and cut up, but he hung tough for the rest of the round.

The pace slowed down in Round 3, with both men exchanging. The round was even up until Spann upped the temp and backed Smith with a right. However, the final push from Spann wasn’t enough as only one judge gave him Round 3, with the other two awarding it to Smith.

With the win, Smith was able to snap a two-fight losing skid. The former title challenger’s past two wins have now come against Spann.

UFC free fight: Anthony Smith submits Ryan Spann after wild, one-round Fight of the Night contest

Watch Anthony Smith submit Ryan Spann ahead of their rematch at UFC Fight Night 225.

[autotag]Anthony Smith[/autotag] and [autotag]Ryan Spann[/autotag] gave fans a wild show in their first clash. Now, almost two years later, they’ll get a chance to do it again.

This Saturday at UFC Fight Night 225, Smith and Spann will rematch in the co-main event of the card, which takes place at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore. The event streams on ESPN+.

Spann and Smith first fought in September 2021 in the main event of UFC Fight Night 192. Although Spann connected well and escaped tough positions in the first four minutes of fighting, Smith eventually was able to find Spann’s back, sink in the rear-naked choke, and get the tap. It was a wild, first-round fight that won Fight of the Night awards.

Since their fight, Smith (36-18 MMA, 11-8 UFC) has competed twice and lost twice. He was stopped by Magomed Ankalaev in 2022, and then lost a unanimous decision to Johnny Walker back in May. The 35-year-old was on a three-fight winning streak before the pair of defeats.

On the other hand, Spann (21-8 MMA, 7-3 UFC) has competed three times since losing to Smith. He’s gone 2-1, stopping Ion Cutelaba and Dominick Reyes before losing by submission to Nikita Krylov.

UFC Fight Night 225: Anthony Smith vs. Ryan Spann odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 225 odds between Anthony Smith vs. Ryan Spann with MMA picks and predictions.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

In a 3-round light heavyweight bout on the main card, Anthony Smith and Ryan Spann meet at UFC Fight Night 225 — also known as UFC Singapore — at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore, on Saturday. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the UFC Fight Night 225: Smith vs. Spann odds, and make our expert picks and predictions.

Records: Smith (36-18-0) | Spann (21-8-0)

The prelims can be viewed on ESPN+ at 5 a.m. ET, while the main card starts at 8 a.m. ET on ESPN+.

Smith takes the walk to the octagon looking to pull out of a nosedive. He has dropped his last 2 fights, a unanimous-decision loss to Johnny Walker last time out in May, and a 2nd-round KO/TKO setback against Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 277 in July 2022.

It’s been a roller coaster ride for Smith since his title shot loss to Jon Jones at UFC 235 in 2019, as he has won 4 bouts and he has lost 4 fights. He has been knocked out twice during the span and has recorded 3 submission victories and a TKO – Doctor’s Stoppage against Jimmy Crute.

As far as Spann is concerned, he might as well be strapped in the roller coaster right next to Smith. He has posted 3 wins and 3 losses across his past 6 outings, including a 1st-round submission loss to Nikita Krylov last time out in mid-March.

Spann is a versatile fighter who has recorded a KO/TKO in the 1st round over Dominick Reyes at UFC 281 and a 1st-round submission victory over Ion Cutelaba on May 14, 2022, while also taking care of “Smilin” Sam Alvey via decision at UFC 249 back on May 9, 2020. He can do it a number of ways, and that’s likely why he is installed as a slight favorite.

Spann has the arm span, pardon the pun. He has a 3-inch reach advantage, which will serve him well in keeping his opponent at a distance, allowing him to pick and choose his spots to get close in. He also has a 3.28-to-2.96 significant strikes landed per minute advantage, an overwhelming 1.64-to-0.48 takedown average advantage and a 1.91-to-0.69 submission average.

Smith is slightly ahead in significant strikes landed per minute advantage, posting a 50.51% mark, while Spann checks in at 45.99%.

UFC Fight Night 255: Smith vs. Spann picks and predictions

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

Win or lose, SPANN (-125) doesn’t clown around. His past 6 bouts have not made it out of the 1st round and I think he is able to get this one down by quickly pouncing on Smith.

Smith has been effective in the ground game, so it might not be in Spann’s best interest to get into the wrestling match. However, I think Spann has enough punching power to end this one with a KO/TKO instead.

If you’re a little cautious, you can go METHOD OF VICTORY – 5-WAY: SPANN BY KO/TKO, DQ OR SUBMISSION (-110) at near even-money to get both potential results.

I also like METHOD OF VICTORY – 7-WAY: SPANN BY KO/TKO OR DQ (+175) for a chance to nearly double up. Of course, if you go this route, and there is a submission win, you obviously do not cash.

Over/Under (O/U)

No (-650): Will the fight go the distance? is obviously way too expensive, costing you 6 1/2 times your potential return. Spann hasn’t made it out of the 1st round since May 9, 2020, a fight that went the distance.

Smith isn’t terribly keen to get the judges involved either, and he has made it to Round 2 just twice in the past 5 outings.

UNDER 1.5 ROUNDS (-185) is worth playing lightly, but even that’s a little too expensive for my liking.

Ryan Spann dismisses previous loss to Anthony Smith ahead of UFC Fight Night 225: ‘It’s just a first fight for me’

Ryan Spann is not putting too much stock into his loss to Anthony Smith ahead of their rematch at UFC Fight Night 225.

[autotag]Ryan Spann[/autotag] is not putting too much stock in his loss to Anthony Smith ahead of their rematch.

This Saturday, in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 225, Spann (21-8 MMA, 7-3 UFC) and Smith (36-18 MMA, 11-8 UFC) meet again after their first clash back in September 2021 in the main event of UFC Fight Night 192. That night at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Smith submitted Spann with a rear-naked choke in the first round of the contest.

Now, almost two years later, Spann enters the rematch with little to take away from the defeat.

“It’s hard to say what the mentality is when I think this is my first rematch as a pro,” Spann told reporters at the UFC Fight Night 225 media day. “I’ve only had one ever. Right now, I’m not really thinking about (it), like the past is the past. I can’t do anything about that. It’s just a first fight for me.”

[lawrence-related id=2673744,2673734]

Since the defeat to Smith, Spann has gone 2-1, picking up stoppage victories over Ion Cutelaba and Dominick Reyes, and most recently, losing by submission to Nikita Krylov. On the other hand, Smith has lost twice since their fight.

When asked to analyze Smith, Spann said he’s done little to study his opponent. He’s just focused on himself.

“It’s hard to say, even when we fought before,” Spann explained. “Honestly, I didn’t watch too much of anything. I watched a couple of things and that’s really about it, so it’s hard to say. I just show up and be me and have fun, and the rest will come.”
