Big Ten Notebook: Purdue, Northwestern move onto Round of 32, Nebraska, Wisconsin eliminated from the NCAA Tournament

A look at how the Big Ten did in the NCAA Tournament.

On the second day of March Madness, the Big Ten was unable to continue its undefeated streak. Two teams, Northwestern and Purdue, moved on. However, Nebraska and Wisconsin were not as lucky, as their title runs came to an end.

Entering the tournament, Purdue had one of the best odds of winning March Madness, and they showed why on Friday night. The Boilermakers held Grambling State to 50 points and a 36.4 field goal percentage. Purdue was led by Zach Edey, who scored 30 points and added 21 rebounds to his resume. The Boilermakers will take on No.8 Utah State on Sunday at 2:40 in the afternoon.

Joining Purdue in the win column was Northwestern who beat FAU 77-65 in overtime. The Wildcats were led by Ryan Langborg, who scored a team-high 27 points. Northwestern also made the most of their opportunities from three-point range, shooting 34.8 percent. On Sunday, the Wildcats will be back in action against No.1 UConn at 7:45 pm.

Upsets have been abundant through the first few days of March Madness, and No.5 Wisconsin was on the losing side on Friday. The Badgers took on No.12 James Madison and couldn’t recover from a slow start in a 72-61 loss. They also turned the ball over 19 times and were outscored in the paint 30-22.

The last game of the day featuring a Big Ten team was between No.9 Texas A&M and No.8 Nebraska. In a hard-fought battle, the Aggies emerged with a 98-83 win. They were able to pull away late, partly due to their three-point shooting and success in getting close to the basket. As the Aggies punched their ticket to the Round of 32, they outscored Nebraska in the paint 44-38.

Northwestern picks up big transfer portal commitment from Princeton guard Ryan Langborg

Northwestern picked up a strong transfer portal commitment on Sunday.

The [autotag]Northwestern Wildcats[/autotag] men’s basketball team picked up a transfer portal commitment from Princeton guard Ryan Lanborg on Sunday.

Langborg, a graduate transfer averaged 12.7 points per game this past season and was a huge part of the Tigers’ NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 run in which he put up 22 points against Missouri and 26 points against Creighton.

On the season for Princeton, Langborg had 24 double-digit scoring efforts in 32 games. He shot 42.3% from the floor for the season including 33.2% from deep. Langborg is also a considerably strong free-throw shooter at 82.3%.

Langborg will join a Northwestern squad that made the NCAA Tournament this season for just the second time in school history. After making the tournament in 2017 as a No. 8 seed for the first time, the Wildcats returned to the Big Dance this past March as a No. 7 seed. They would take down No. 10 Boise State in the first round before falling to No. 2 UCLA 68-63 in the second round.

Under head coach Chris Collins, Northwestern has amassed three winning seasons, their 2022-23 season being their first since 2016-17. They also won 20 games in the 2015-16 season as well.

Lamborg will join Ty Berry in the Wildcats’ backcourt as they are currently set to lose guards Boo Buie and Chase Audige after both declared for the NBA Draft. That being said, both Buie and Audige are maintaining their eligibility. This past season Buie averaged 17.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 4.5 assists a game while Audige averaged a strong 14.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists of his own.
