Matt Thurmond, Ryan Hybl highlight Golf Coaches Association of America’s 2024 Hall of Fame class

The coaches will be inducted Dec. 10 in Las Vegas.

The Golf Coaches Association of America announced Tuesday its 2024 Hall of Fame Class.

Arizona State coach Matt Thurmond and Oklahoma coach Ryan Hybl will officially be inducted during the GCAA Hall of Fame Reception and Awards Dinner on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.

Thurmond’s coaching career started as an assistant at his alma mater, BYU, in 1999. He then joined 2014 GCAA Hall of Famer O.D. Vincent’s staff at Washington the next season before being named head coach in June 2001. The Huskies made the NCAA Championship in each of Thurmond’s first five years, including a program-best third-place finish in 2005. That same year James Lepp won the individual NCAA title. Washington went on to make NCAAs seven times in his final 10 season in Seattle, making match play three times.

Thurmond was hired at Arizona State’s head coach on July 25, 2016. He has led the Sun Devils to 24 tournament wins, including the 2024 Pac-12 Championship and consecutive NCAA Regional titles in 2022 and 2023. Arizona State made match play at the NCAA Championship three times in six appearances since Thurmond arrived, including a runner-up finish in 2022. Thurmond has led 11 different Sun Devils to 18 All-America honors.

After finishing his playing career at Georgia, Hybl joined 2012 GCAA Hall of Famer Chris Haack as an assistant coach in 2005. In his four seasons on staff (2005-09), the Bulldogs captured 18 team wins, featuring the 2006 and 2009 SEC Championship and 2008 NCAA East Regional, and made the NCAA Championship each year.

Hybl was hired as head coach at Oklahoma on June 22, 2009, turning the program back into a national powerhouse. The Sooners have recorded the top 14 single-season scoring averages in program history and made 13 straight NCAA Championship appearances, culminating in a national championship in 2017. Hybl has coached a program-record 46 tournament wins, including three Big 12 Championships (2018, 2022, 2023) and four NCAA Regional titles (2015, 2018, 2022, 2024).

In 1980, the GCAA began inducting men’s college golf coaches into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame. Since then, the hall has grown to include more than 160 members. To be selected to the Hall of Fame, a coach must be nominated by their peers and selected by the GCAA Hall of Fame Committee.

College: Oklahoma continues ‘amazing ride,’ goes wire-to-wire to repeat as Big 12 men’s golf champions

The Sooners set a program record for a four-round tournament and also set a Big 12 record at Prairie Dunes by 10 shots.

The OU men’s golf team roared to a wire-to-wire victory in the Big 12 Championships Thursday at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan., repeating as league champion with an 18-stroke win.

The Sooners finished 1-under par, setting a program record for a four-round tournament and also set a Big 12 record at Prairie Dunes by 10 shots. The 10th-ranked Sooners went 275-279-284-281.

TCU finished in second at 17-over, followed by Texas Tech (+21), Texas (+23) and Oklahoma State (+24).

“This still feels like the first time because it’s so special,” OU coach Ryan Hybl said. “For us to have won three of the last five Big 12 Championships is so awesome. But this one was extra special because we got to enjoy the walk a little bit more on the back nine there with the lead. Overall, I’m just really proud of our guys for digging in their heels and grinding. This place is so difficult and to shoot under par at Prairie Dunes over four rounds with five guys is really special.”

Texas Tech’s Ludvig Aberg won the individual title, finishing at 15-under par. He was followed by OSU’s Jonas Baumgartner (-7), Texas’ Brian Stark (-6), OU’s Patrick Welch (-2) and OU’s Drew Goodman (E).

OU will host an NCAA regional May 15-17 at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman. The top five teams at the regional will advance to the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.

“The journey has been an amazing ride and the future is so bright,” Hybl added. “When I think about all the people that have chipped in – from our Chip in Club, our former players, our coaching staffs throughout the years – it’s been really special. We’ve got a lot of opportunity to grow moving forward, but at the end of the day it still comes down to the fact that our guys work, and they want it. They’re not scared of the work and that’s why they’re champions.”

OU women’s golfer Mikhaela Fortuna was selected to participate as an individual in the NCAA Athens Regional May 8-10 at UGA Golf Course, the NCAA announced.

The No. 22 Oklahoma State women’s golf team will compete as the fourth-seed at the NCAA San Antonio Regional at TPC San Antonio from May 8-10.

Oklahoma coach Ryan Hybl, Sooners’ Quade Cummins among those tied for Sunnehanna Amateur lead

Oklahoma men’s golf coach Ryan Hybl is among the leaders midway through the prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur.

How does that old saying go, those who can’t do, teach? Or something like that, right? Well, Ryan Hybl is proving he’s pretty good at both at the 67th Sunnehanna Amateur.

Hybl, Quade Cummins – who played for Hybl and recently completed his senior year at Oklahoma – recent Auburn grad Graysen Huff and Arizona State commit Preston Summerhays are all tied for the lead at 5 under after the second round of play at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Hybl led after a first-round 5-under 65 but shot even par on Wednesday. Huff and Cummins did the inverse while Summerhays improved on an opening-round 68 with a Wednesday 67.

During his collegiate career at Georgia from 2001-04, Hybl was a two-time All-American and All-SEC team member and a Ben Hogan Award semifinalist. From 2005-09 he was an assistant for the Bulldogs before taking over at Oklahoma in 2009. Hybl briefly played professional golf while a coach at Georgia, recording several top-10 finishes on developmental tours before retiring due to an elbow injury.

Leaderboard: Sunnehanna Amateur

Thursday’s third round begins at 8 a.m. ET, with the final round at the same time on Friday.
