Rutgers has two recipients for the Outstanding Sportsmanship Award

Two Rutgers athletes were honored by the Big Ten this week.

With the spring season in the books for college athletics, nationwide programs are shifting focus to the 2024-2025 academic year. However, the Big Ten honored 28 students named Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners on Tuesday. Two Rutgers athletes were honored.

This year, the Scarlet Knights were represented by Xavier Marcoux and Leigha Devine. They both had impressive seasons for Rutgers golf, but as Tuesday showed, their impact exceeded their statistics. One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by their school as a Sportsmanship Award honoree and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each school.

While Marcoux and Devine made headlines, they were not the only Rutgers athletes with something to celebrate. The Scarlet Knights, who were Big Ten Sportsmanship Honorees, include Chris Hill, Cole Cutters, Rylee Ferretti, Allison Lynch, Oskar Palmquist, and Sonny Fauci.

Over the next few months, Rutgers athletes will get well-deserved rest before returning to action. For many, Tuesday was a milestone that showed how much each athlete means to their school.

Former Rutgers golfer Chris Gotterup wins first PGA Tour Event

Over the weekend, former Rutgers golfer Chris Gotterup etched his name into the history books with a win at the Myrtle Beach Classic.

Former Rutgers star and PGA Tour golfer Chris Gotterup made headlines on Sunday. The New Jersey native won the Myrtle Beach Classic, becoming the first Scarlet Knight in school history to win a PGA Tour event. Gotterup, who was with Rutgers from 2017-2020, finished 22 under par.

Gotterup won the event by six strokes.

For Gotterup, it was a performance he will never forget, as he won a $720,000 prize. Due to his success, the 24-year-old has earned a spot in this week’s PGA Championship at Valhalla. He will also now be able to compete in the 2025 Players Championship and the Sentry.

On the final day of the classic, Gotterup took his game to another level. He finished with a four-under-par 67 to secure the win. On Sunday, he was able to create some separation from the competition with a clutch birdie from 15 feet on hole 16 to create a six-shot advantage.

During his biggest career win, Gotterup had to battle adversity after struggling on the first hole.

“I felt good, like better than I thought I would feel coming out of the gates even though I made two bogeys,” Gotterup said in a PGA postgame interview. “Kind of a crappy putt on the first hole and a really tough two-putt on the next. Then to bounce back the way I did, it’s just kind of how I roll.”

Although Gotterup is now shifting his focus to Valhalla, his performance last weekend secured a special place for him in history. He became the first Jersey Shore native to win the event since 1948. That has not changed his mindset but only increased his drive.

Big weekend win for Rutgers women’s golf

Rutgers women’s golf had a strong weekend with a win in the Rutgers Invitational.

Over the weekend, Rutgers women’s golf had a reason to celebrate. The Scarlet Knights put together a memorable performance as they won the Rutgers Invitational. It marked the team’s second event victory in the last two seasons.

For the first time since 2017, Rutgers hosted the invitational and took advantage of the opportunity. The Scarlet Knights won the tournament by 26 strokes over runner-up Albany. Their win came in less than weather, as challenging and windy conditions were a constant theme.

During Rutgers win, Rikke Nordvik made history. The Stavangar, Norway native finished with a 1-over score to par, the lowest score in tournament history. However, she was one of many who had success, as six Rutgers players were named to the All-Tournament Team.

“We are excited to have earned the win at home,” Williams told Rutgers athletics. “The support we had on the course from friends, family and fans was amazing and energizing for our team. I’m happy with the consistency from the team; they played a lot of steady golf this weekend in difficult conditions.

Rutgers Golf: Leigha Devine finishes runner-up at Fresno Classic

Rutgers golf got a strong performance from Leigha Devine this week.

On Tuesday afternoon, Rutgers golf was back in action as the Fresno Classic came to an end. While the Scarlet Knights did not finish in the top five, Leigha Devine gave them a reason to celebrate.

Devine finished just two strokes behind the event winner. In the third round, she birdied holes No. 7 and No. 15 and collected 13 pars. While she felt just short of first place, it was an experience that Devine didn’t take for granted.

“The last leg of our west coast swing was super fun; Fresno put on a great tournament, and Copper River was quite the challenge,” Devine told Rutgers Athletics. “The greens were in impeccable shape and I wish I could have taken more advantage of that. My game is looking promising heading into our last three events. The team and I are ready for our debut at home next week and can’t wait to see what we can do to finish out the season.”

Five from Rutgers Women’s Golf Earn WGCA All-America Scholar Recognition

Rutgers women’s golf pulls in five honors.

Rutgers women’s golf had a lot to celebrate this week. On Thursday, news broke that all five team members were named 2022-23 Women’s Golf Association (WGCA) Division I All-American Scholars. The group also made history along the way.

For graduate Maeve Rossi it is the fifth time she has received All-America Scholar honors, a new program record. Leigha Devine and Rikke Nordvik received the honor for the third time in their careers, while Nicole Ewing and Lucrezia Rossettin received the honor for the second time.

To be eligible for the award, a recipient must have a 3.50 GPA and have played in at least 50 percent of their team’s rounds during the 2022-23 season. Over the last ten years, Rutgers has been well represented. Dating back to 2015, the Scarlet Knights have accumulated 45 All-America Scholar awards under head coach Kari Williams.

During William’s tenure, the Scarlet Knights have rewritten the record books. That continued during the 2022-2023 campaign. Devine set single-season records for scoring average (+1.67), birdies (86), par-5 scoring (4.9083). Rossi set a trio of program records with career birdies (265), rounds (135), and counting scores (122).

As the Scarlet Knights prepare for the 2023-2024 campaign, they will be looking to build on their success. While the roster will look different this upcoming season, what the program accomplished last year will not be forgotten.

Men’s golf adds Martín León to 2023-24 Roster

Rutgers men’s golf adds a big transfer portal piece.

For Rutgers golf, Monday was met with excitement as news broke that Martín León was added to the 2023-24 roster. León is an international junior from Santiago, Chile, with two years of eligibility remaining. He comes to Rutgers with high expectations and an impressive list of accolades.

The Chilean native has recorded 23 rounds at par or better in his two seasons of college golf. León was a 2021 Polo Open Champion in Chile and a 2021 Utah State Amateur Champion during that span. Due to his resume, head coach Rob Shutte is excited about what León brings to the program.

“We had recruited Martín the first time around and he’s had an outstanding college career,” Shutte told Rutgers athletics. “He’s excited to see a different part of the country and be a part of our culture. He’s a proven college player who has had a lot of success. He brings a lot of experience to the table, and we are excited to add him to the mix. He’s a super supportive teammate that’s looking forward to being outside the shadows of New York City and helping us win.”

Additionally, León competed in the 2022 NCAA Regionals in Norman, OK, and the 2022 NCAA National Championship in Scottsdale, AZ. On a Rutgers team that set program records last spring, León’s experience will be a welcomed addition.

With León now in the fold, Rutgers golf should again be one of the best in the country this upcoming season as their future just got brighter.
