Rutgers has two recipients for the Outstanding Sportsmanship Award

Two Rutgers athletes were honored by the Big Ten this week.

With the spring season in the books for college athletics, nationwide programs are shifting focus to the 2024-2025 academic year. However, the Big Ten honored 28 students named Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners on Tuesday. Two Rutgers athletes were honored.

This year, the Scarlet Knights were represented by Xavier Marcoux and Leigha Devine. They both had impressive seasons for Rutgers golf, but as Tuesday showed, their impact exceeded their statistics. One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by their school as a Sportsmanship Award honoree and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each school.

Talented Rutgers duo rewrites the record books at Tom Jones Memorial Invitational

It was a big weekend for Rutgers track and field at the Tom Jones Memorial.

At the Tom Jones Memorial Invitation this past weekend, Rutgers track and field standouts Alex Carlson and Chloe Timberg helped the Scarlet Knights earn a split. In the process, they rewrote the record books for the program.

The Scarlet Knights finished the weekend with six top-three finishes and ten total performances on the top-10 all-time list.

An unforgettable weekend started with Carlson, who improved upon the previous 5,000-meter record by more than 30 seconds. The New Jersey native won the event with a time of 15:53.14. It was not only a new personal best for Carlson but also shattered the nearly 22-year-old record set by All-American Julie Culley.

Congratulations to Alex Carlson for setting another Rutgers school record in the 5,000m with a time of 15:53.14 at the Larry Ellis Invitational @ Princeton University. Carlson broke Julie Culley’s record (16:29.84) set in 2002. Go Knights! βš”οΈπŸ›‘πŸ”₯ #WeRInevitable #RutgersDistance pic.twitter.com/bCsYefuElr

Joining Carlson in making history was Chloe Timberg, who cleared the bar in the women’s pole vault at 4.56m (14′ 11.5″). This topped her previous mark, which was set at the Larry Ellis Invitational meet record. In the men’s 5,000-meter, Brian Pedretti also had a memorable performance, clocking a time of 14:31.19, which ranks fifth all-time.

How did the Rutgers Olympic sports do this past week?

Although February is in the rearview mirror, Rutgers athletics has continued to be a winning machine

Although February is in the rearview mirror, Rutgers athletics has continued to be a winning machine. Baseball and softball are off to impressive starts due to their potent offenses. So far, they have combined to post a 21-9 record before the start of conference play. However, they are not the only teams adding to the win column.

After a three-game skid, Rutgers men’s basketball ended February with an 82-52 win over Michigan. They ended the month strong due to the play of Clifford Omoruyi, who added 19 points to his resume.

As temperatures continue to rise, there is plenty coming up for Rutgers
fans to look forward to. After a brief hiatus, Rutgers wrestling will be back in action on March 9 for the Big Ten championships. The lacrosse season is also officially under way, with the men’s team off to a 4-1 start.

It is certainly a fascinating offer and could afford the lucky winner a chance to see a special year in Rutgers athletics.

Football, which retained most of its core, is coming off a 7-6 season and a win over Miami in the Pinstripe Bowl. Men’s basketball boasts two five-star recruits in their upcoming class and women’s basketball is starting to see its young team come together over the past month.

Wrestling is nationally ranked and finished the season with four Big Ten wins, an impressive accomplishment in the toughest conference in the nation.

Rutgers athletics finding success in February

Over the last few weeks, Rutgers sports fans have had plenty to celebrate. The Lacrosse season is in full swing and after a disappointing January, men’s basketball looks like a different team. So far in February, that trio has posted a 6-0 record.

However, they are not the only teams that have had success. Despite dropping their last three matches, wrestling is off to a 10-4 start. They have also been very good on the road, with a 5-1 record compared to a 4-3 mark at home. Despite their struggle at Jersey Mike’s Arena, fans have been out in full force.

However, the fun is far from over. In the second full week of February, wrestling is set to take on the best team in the country in Penn State on February 12. Men’s basketball will put their three-game winning streak on the line on February 15. Those matchups should provide plenty of fireworks for fans in Piscataway.

Rutgers tennis signs Ontario star

Rutgers tennis got an experienced and accomplished standout this week.

Rutgers tennis had a reason to celebrate on Tuesday when head coach Hillary Ritchie announced the signing of Jelena Vico. The Ontario native is set to join the Scarlet Knights next fall. However, she brings an impressive resume to Piscataway.

The future Scarlet Knight competed in events worldwide during the ITF World Tennis Tour this year. Those tournaments included stops in Guatemala, Canada, and Europe. In 2022, she earned her first-ever ITF title at a J5 in Santa Tecla, El Salvador.

Due to her past success, many at Rutgers, including Ritchie, are excited for Vico to arrive on campus.

Jelena is going to be a terrific addition to our team,” Ritchie told Rutgers Athletics. “She has a ton of natural power in her game. Her international competition experience is going to be an asset in Big Ten play.”

While Vico has thrived on the tennis courts, she has also excelled in the classroom. At Richview Collegiate Institute in Etobicoke, she has been an honor student every year. When she wasn’t on the tennis court, Vico was a member of the school’s Book Club, Leadership Club, and volleyball team.

Although her collegiate debut is still months away, Vico looks forward to how Rutgers will impact her future.

” It’s not just about hitting the tennis courts, but also being a part of a supportive team and getting a top-notch education in something that I love. Rutgers is the right place for me to grow both athletically and academically,” Vico said in a statement about her signing with the program.
