Former Michigan football standout gets FBS-level coaching job

He’s moving on up! #GoBlue

In something of dark days in Ann Arbor, there were few bright lights. Among them was Michigan football wide receiver Roy Roundtree.

Roundtree made some clutch catches in his time as a Wolverine and though he didn’t have much of an NFL career — he moonlighted for one year with the Cincinnati Bengals — he has had a rising career in the coaching realm.

Working his way up from Division II to the Football Championship Subdivision early, Roundtree coached at Limestone College and Indiana State before demoting himself to become a grad assistant with his alma mater. After two more years in Ann Arbor, Roundtree returned to Division II to coach wideouts at Grand Valley State for three years before rejoining the FCS for one year with McNeese State.

Now, Roundtree is returning to the Football Bowl Subdivision accepting a Group of Five job with Miami of Ohio as its new wide receivers coach.

It may be baby steps, but Roundtree is certainly moving up the ranks. With a Division I FBS level job, Roundtree could find himself making the top-tier in a few short years.

The Redhawks haven’t had a 1,000-yard receiver since 2021 but have a few rising pass catchers in its ranks. Given that Miami (Ohio) is known as the cradle of coaching, it may be the perfect place for Roundtree to establish himself at the next level.

And for the second time, former Michigan wide receiver Roy Roundtree has left Michigan.

The standout pass catcher known for his huge, game-winning catch against Notre Dame in 2011 got a brief opportunity in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2013, but eventually worked on a path towards coaching. He got his start at CSU – Pueblo as a WR coach, then the same at Limestone College, then Indiana State. But he left the Sycamores to return to Ann Arbor, becoming a grad assistant under Jim Harbaugh.

However, on Thursday, Grand Valley State University announced that it has hired Roundtree away from Michigan to become the Division II program’s new wide receivers coach.

Roundtree was back at Michigan for two years, and while it’s rarely said that grad assistants are particularly huge losses, given how much he contributed to recruiting and how often he was mentioned (at least to us here at WolverinesWire) by prospective targets, his ability on the trail will surely be missed by the maize and blue faithful.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. —  It certainly wasn’t the biggest recruiting weekend for Michigan football, but still, the Wolverines gridiron contingent had a solid outing taking in the maize and blue on the hardwood.

With many of the coaches out of town recruiting, that didn’t mean that there couldn’t be a bevy of commits and prospects to come to town, especially with a top ten matchup between the No. 5 basketball team and No. 10 Oregon.

WolverinesWire was on the baseline to capture the commits, recruits and staff members who were at Crisler Center to take in the game.
