Rookie TE Colby Parkinson to take on bigger role with Greg Olsen on IR

Expect to see more of Seattle Seahawks tight end Colby Parkinson now that veteran starter Greg Olsen has been placed on injured reserve.

The Seattle Seahawks placed veteran tight end Greg Olsen on injured reserve this week after he suffered a plantar fascia tear in his foot Thursday night against the Arizona Cardinals.

While Olsen could possibly return to finish out the season if his recovery goes well, the plan for now, is to make do with the existing tight ends on the roster.

Will Dissly and Jacob Hollister will likely carry the bulk of the load but rookie tight end Colby Parkinson should see more time on the field as well.

“Colby’s going right into the rotation,” coach Pete Carroll said Tuesday. “We’re going to just throw him in there. To make sure that everybody’s fresh, he’s going to just play. I’m not going to hesitate there. We’re going to miss Greg tremendously. You can’t replace that experience and that wherewithal, but Colby is going to come in here and do the best he can and see if he can help us.”

The Seahawks have Thanksgiving day off but resume practice Friday ahead of the Monday-night matchup against the Eagles in Philadelphia.

Pete Carroll hoping for more rotation from Seahawks defensive line

Coach Pete Carroll is hoping for more rotation from the Seattle Seahawks defensive line, giving more players more snaps throughout 2020.

The Seattle Seahawks’ defensive line has been a work in progress in 2020 with a number of new faces coach Pete Carroll had hoped to plug in and play to help with the rotation.

Seattle selected defensive end Darrell Taylor in the second round of this year’s draft and Alton Robinson in the fifth, but both players were unavailable last Sunday. Taylor started the regular season on the Non-Football Injury list and Robinson was inactive.

Seattle also brought back a couple of former Seahawks to help with the rotation as well, Benson Mayowa and Bruce Irvin. Both had more snaps than Carroll would like Week 1, however, and the plan is to spread things out a bit more.

“We want our rotations better than that, more evenly matched if we can,” Carroll said Wednesday. “Sometimes you can, sometimes we can’t. Bruce is double-dipping because he’s playing the outside ‘backer spot, he’s really uniquely qualified to do that. He’s getting a lot of plays there, too. We just got to figure it out as we go.”

The Seahawks did recently sign defensive end Damontre Moore – another former Seattle player – who could join those Carroll plans to utilize in the future.

The Seattle Seahawks rarely make a move without having a calculated plan for the future. In this case, the Seahawks signed defensive end Damontre Moore on Thursday just in time for the start of the regular season.

“He really has a chance to help us right now,” Coach Pete Carroll said Thursday after practice. “Without Darrell Taylor for a little bit longer, we needed another guy in the rotation, and Damontre has always impressed me with his effort and his chase of the football. He’s got a great motor, and I’ve always liked that about him.”

Taylor underwent surgery this offseason to repair the leg he injured last year and likely won’t be ready to start the season. With Moore having played for Seattle in 2016, Carroll is familiar with what he brings to the table.

“He’s been up and down to his career and been a lot of places and all,” Carroll explained. “He’s very serious right now, really settled down – all of the maturity process that you would hope to see in a guy who was wild and crazy and all that. He’s really focused right now. He’s a dad and taking care of his little one and his family and all that, it seems to have really given him direction and focus that he has admittedly talked about already.

“So I’m really pleased to get him because he plays so freaking hard – he really gives it up effort-wise.”

Moore will have to survive the 53-man roster cuts on Saturday if he is to see any rotation after all.
