Lions activate CB Emmanuel Moseley in series of roster moves

Moseley has been out since tearing a pectoral muscle in early August, but he’s ready to play against the Colts

Emmanuel Moseley is back and ready for action. The Detroit Lions activated the veteran cornerback from injured reserve ahead of the team’s trip to Indianapolis in Week 12.

Moseley has been out since tearing a pectoral muscle during the preseason. The oft-injured veteran had been repping as the first-team slot cornerback before his unfortunate injury, a role now (quite capably) occupied by Amik Robertson.

Moseley has been star-crossed with injuries. He missed the final 13 games of the 2022 NFL season with the 49ers after tearing his ACL. The Lions signed him as a free agent and waited for him to get healthy enough to play, only to lose Moseley to another torn ACL after just four snaps. He then tore the pec this summer.

The Lions designated Moseley for return two weeks ago. His 21-day activation window wasn’t up until after the Lions play the Colts, but an injury to reserve CB Ennis Rakestraw accelerated Moseley’s return. Moseley was placed on I.R. in a correlating roster move.

The Lions also elevated freshly signed linebacker David Long from the practice squad to the gameday roster. Earlier in the day, CB Terrion Arnold was ruled out with an injury.

DJ Reader is activated from the PUP list ahead of roster cutdowns

Reader will now count on the 53-man roster and is eligible to play in Week 1

One of the mysteries of the Detroit Lions’ 53-man roster construction was solved on Sunday. The Lions announced that veteran defensive tackle DJ Reader has been activated from the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list.

Reader joins the active roster now that he’s cleared his physical. The 30-year-old nose tackle has been sidelined all offseason as he recovers from a torn quadriceps suffered in 2023 while Reader was playing for the Cincinnati Bengals.

No. 98 was out at practice on Wednesday and working with trainers to try and get ready for the regular season. Reader is expected to start next to Alim McNeill on the defensive interior.

Now that the Lions have activated Reader, he is no longer eligible to stay on the PUP list and miss the first four games. That will take up a roster spot on the 53-man squad, which is due to be finalized by 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Falcons to host Pro Bowl safety on free-agent visit, per report

Falcons to host Pro Bowl safety on free-agent visit, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport

The Atlanta Falcons suffered numerous injuries during Friday’s preseason game against the Miami Dolphins, including an injury to second-year safety DeMarcco Hellams. While head coach Raheem Morris said Hellams isn’t headed to the injured reserve list, the former seventh-round pick will be out for a bit due to an ankle injury.

According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Falcons are set to host former two-time Pro Bowl safety Justin Simmons on a free-agent visit on Monday and Tuesday. Simmons, 30, played all eight years of his NFL career for the Denver Broncos. Despite posting one of his best seasons in 2023, the Broncos released him over the offseason.

Simmons has spent most of his career playing the free safety position, racking up 30 interceptions and 64 passes defended since entering the league as a third-round pick in 2016. According to Over The Cap‘s projections, the Falcons have roughly $3.5 million in cap space available.

Hellams was set to play a key role this season but since he’s likely out for a while, Simmons would make an intriguing addition. The team signed three players, including former Pro Bowl kick returner Jakeem Grant. Check out Atlanta’s updated 90-man roster following the team’s latest transactions.

Ex-Falcons DL Willington Previlon claimed off waivers by Steelers

Ex-Falcons DL Willington Previlon has been claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Steelers

Former Atlanta Falcons defensive lineman Willington Previlon was claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday, according to the NFL’s transaction report.

The Falcons waived Previlon along with offensive lineman Nolan Potter in order to make room for offensive lineman Jaryd Jones-Smith and defensive tackle Prince Emili on Thursday.

Previlon, 27, initially signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2020. The former Rutgers standout now joins a handful of other former Falcons players in Pittsburgh, including Cordarrelle Patterson, Scotty Miller and Van Jefferson.

The Steelers hired former Falcons head coach Arthur Smith as their offensive coordinator and the two teams will face off in Week 1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Falcons sign two linemen, release two others from roster

The Falcons signed two players and released two others from their 90-man roster on Thursday

The Atlanta Falcons announced multiple roster transactions on Thursday afternoon, signing offensive lineman Jaryd Jones-Smith and defensive tackle Prince Emili to their 90-man roster.

In a corresponding move, the team released offensive lineman Nolan Potter and defensive lineman Willington Previlon.

Jones-Smith, 28, has played for several teams, including the Baltimore Ravens and Las Vegas Raiders. While he’s only appeared in six regular-season games, the former undrafted free agent out of Pittsburgh has kept his NFL career alive by playing on different practice squads.

Emili, 25, spent the last year as a member of the San Antonio Brahmas, helping his team reach the UFL championship game this past week. In 2022, Emili played in two games for the Buffalo Bills, recording three combined tackles and one pass defended.

NFL announces updated postseason roster rules

The NFL announced a few minor tweaks to its postseason roster rules on Tuesday

The Atlanta Falcons (7-9) probably aren’t headed to the Super Bowl this year, but they still have an outside shot to win the NFC South and host a playoff game. To do that, the Falcons must beat the New Orleans Saints in Week 18 and hope the Buccaneers lose to the Panthers.

Since the postseason is still on the table for Atlanta, it never hurts to know the rules. Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network shared the league’s updated postseason roster rules on Tuesday evening.

The memo, which was sent to all 32 NFL teams, included two key points of emphasis.

  1. Players who are waived on Friday or Saturday will remain on waivers until 4:00 p.m. ET on Monday afternoon.
  2. Teams playing in Saturday night playoff games can make roster transactions up until 4:00 p.m. ET on game day.

The Falcons worked out CFL wide receiver Austin Mack on Tuesday afternoon, but no signing has been reported as of yet.

Falcons sign P Pat O’Donnell to practice squad, release LB Frank Ginda

The Atlanta Falcons have signed punter Pat O’Donnell to their practice squad and released linebacker Frank Ginda, the team announced on Friday.

Falcons punter Bradley Pinion was absent at Friday’s practice so the team is likely just being cautious if he can’t play Sunday. Stay tuned for Atlanta’s final Week 16 injury report on Friday afternoon.

The Atlanta Falcons are continuing to make moves to their roster following last weekend’s rookie minicamp. On Tuesday, the team signed four players and released another.

Atlanta added quarterback Austin Aune, defensive back Lukas Denis, defensive lineman LaCale London and offensive lineman Barry Wesley, while releasing veteran offensive lineman Germain Ifedi.

Ifedi just signed a one-year deal back in March, so his release is somewhat of a surprise, although he wasn’t likely to see the field this season as a reserve offensive tackle.

Aune, 29, played college football at North Texas, but he previously pursued a career in the MLB. He was a former second-round pick by the New York Yankees and spent six years playing minor league baseball.

As for his time at North Texas, Aune was one of the best quarterbacks in school history.

Aune set a program record with 33 touchdown passes, threw for 3,547 yards and led Division I with an average of 15.29 yards per completion. That season helped him finish with 7,324 career passing yards, good for fourth in program history. — Brett Vito, Tyler Morning Telegraph

The Falcons also signed four players on Monday, while releasing seven others. Expect several more transactions over the next few weeks as the team tinkers with its roster going into training camp.

The Atlanta Falcons have announced their inactives for Sunday’s matchup against the Cleveland Browns.

The Atlanta Falcons have announced their inactives for Sunday’s matchup against the Cleveland Browns. After listing Cordarrelle Patterson as questionable on the injury report, the reigning NFC Offensive Player of the Week is officially good to go.

Six players, including wide receiver Bryan Edwards, are listed on the team’s Week 4 inactives list, which you can see below.

Falcons must cut roster down to 85 players by Tuesday

The Atlanta Falcons must trim their roster down to 85 players before Tuesday’s 4:00 p.m. ET deadline.

The road from 90 players down to 53 is never an easy one for NFL teams. However, due to the COVID-19 outbreak of 2020, the league changed its training camp roster rules so that teams would get more time to evaluate talent.

The Atlanta Falcons had a successful preseason debut on Friday, but the team must part with at least five players by Tuesday in order to get the roster down to 85 players. Then the following week, the Falcons will have to get that number down to 80, before final cuts on August 30.

While we aren’t expecting to see any notable players get released by the Tuesday deadline, the Falcons could look to cut more than the minimum of five players if they wish to sign someone released by another team.

Check out our latest 53-man roster projection and 90-man roster tracker as the team prepares for its second preseason game on August 22 against the New York Jets.
