Brooklyn Nets promote G League COTY Ronnie Burrell to assistant coach

Ronnie Burrell, the 2022-23 G League Coach of the Year, is now a member of Jacque Vaughn’s coaching staff, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

There has been a lot of turnovers for the Brooklyn Nets this offseason, but it hasn’t been with the roster as of right now. On Saturday, the Nets promoted G League Coach of the Year, Ronnie Burrell, to an assistant coach role on head coach Jacque Vaughn’s coaching staff, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

Burrell, 39, was named G League Coach of the Year for the 2022-23 season after guiding Brooklyn’s G League affiliate, the Long Island Nets, to a 23-9 record in the regular season before losing to the Delaware Blue Coats in the Eastern Conference Finals. Ironically, Delaware is the G League affiliate of the Philadelphia 76ers who played Brooklyn in the first round of the 2023 playoffs.

Scotto reported a few weeks ago that there was a possibility of Brooklyn adding Burrell to the coaching staff given how many assistant coaches were leaving for various reasons. Burrell began his coaching career in 2019 as an assistant coach for Long Island and before that, he played professional basketball, mostly in Europe, from 2005 to 2016.

Nets could look to add Ronnie Burrell to Jacque Vaughn’s coaching staff

Ronnie Burrell could be a candidate to be a part of Jacque Vaughn’s coaching staff, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

The Brooklyn Nets could look to add Long Island Nets head coach Ronnie Burrell to Jacque Vaughn’s coaching staff if they decide to look internally for candidates, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. Burrell won the 2022-23 G League Coach of the Year and that made him the second coach to win the award for Long Island after Will Weaver won the accolade for the 2018-19 campaign.

So far, Brooklyn has lost assistant coaches Igor Kokoskov, Tiago Splitter, Brian Keefe, and Royal Ivey, but have also hired former Charlotte Hornets assistant Jay Hernandez. Scotto also reported that the Nets are still interested in adding James Borrego and Will Weaver to the coaching staff.

Now that Vaughn is under contract for the foreseeable future, Vaughn has been given the liberty from Nets ownership to shape his staff as he sees fit. Even if Burrell decides to remain as head coach of Long Island, Brooklyn could still form a strong coaching staff for the upcoming season.
