Incoming Michigan State tennis player Matt Forbes loses US Open match

Incoming Spartan Matt Forbes put together an impressive showing, but fell short in the US Open

For the first time in program history, Michigan State tennis was represented in the US Open this year by incoming freshman Matt Forbes. Forbes earned his entry into the annual event after winning the USTA Boys’ 18s national title a few weeks ago. Forbes put up a nice showing in the US Open this year, but ultimately fell to Russian veteran Roman Safiullin in straight sets.

Forbes did push Safiullin to a tiebreaker in the second set, no easy feat against a player who has hovered in the top-50 players in the world during his career.
