WWE SmackDown live results: Roman Reigns appears, Drew McIntyre vs. Sheamus

Get up to the minute WWE SmackDown live results from the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, where Roman Reigns is scheduled to appear.

Another week, another bit of WWE news that has the whole world talking. But the show, as they say, goes on, and in this case that means SmackDown in Fort Worth.

WWE has actually released a fairly detailed preview for tonight’s show. In what should be the main event, Drew McIntyre and Sheamus will renew their longstanding acquaintances, with something very personal on the line: the right to challenge the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion at Clash at the Castle. Considering that stadium show is close to being a home event for that men, it’s an honor they’ll fight hard to secure.

And who will the undisputed champ be come early September? That depends on what happens at SummerSlam, when Roman Reigns defends his titles against Brock Lesnar in a Last Man Standing Match. Even if he wins, Reigns needs to be wary about Theory and his Money in the Bank briefcase, as the former United States Champ has already hinted at cashing in. Reigns will be on SmackDown live tonight and will quite possibly address the threats to his dominance that both men present.

SmackDown Women’s Champion Liv Morgan hasn’t held her gold nearly as long as Reigns, but she’s been an enthusiastic breath of fresh air since cashing in her Money in the Bank contract the same night she won it. She’ll also be on SmackDown in Fort Worth.

Last but certainly not least, Max Dupri finally got to titillate the juices of the WWE Universe last week with the debut of his Maximum Male Models. They’ll be back for more this week, showing off the 2022 Tennis Collection.

Sounds like a pretty full show, and if you can’t watch live, we’ve got your back. Just bookmark this page and return throughout the evening for the latest WWE SmackDown live results.

Someone will finally beat Roman Reigns. Here are 6 realistic possibilities.

Someone will eventually beat Roman Reigns. Here are six ideas for who might get the honor of saying they dethroned the Tribal Chief.

The seemingly unbeatable champion has been an archetype in professional wrestling for decades, but Roman Reigns has taken the concept to a new level. As the current holder of both the WWE Universal Championship (a title that’s been in his possession for more than 650 days) and WWE Championship, he’s the undisputed WWE world champion, and after vanquishing Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 38, he didn’t have any immediately obvious challengers to his throne.

That kind of dominance is rare in the 21st century, but if there’s one certainty that has to be acknowledged, it’s this: Someone will eventually beat Reigns.

Because of the way he’s been positioned, it’s unlikely that Reigns will lose on a random episode of Raw or SmackDown, and he didn’t even have to worry about a Superstar cashing in the Money in the Bank briefcase on him until recently. That makes SummerSlam the first logical point for a true threat emerge — either in his scheduled match or a cash-in afterward — and if he survives Nashville, it’s not a stretch to think he could still be the undisputed champion when WrestleMania 39 rolls into Los Angeles in 2023.

Needless to say, it can’t be just anyone who ends up toppling Reigns, as it will be a massive story when it happens. That narrows the list of potential candidates, but here are a half-dozen ideas for who might finally get the honor of saying they dethroned the Tribal Chief, in rough order of ascending plausibility.

Brock Lesnar

Yes, Lesnar had his shot at Reigns in Dallas, and if WWE wanted him to run with the unified titles, it would have, you know, just given him the win there.

That said, Lesnar will remain a main event attraction for as long as he wants to keep working for WWE, never far from the championship picture. His credibility speaks for itself; along with his long list of accomplishments in pro wrestling and MMA, if you just showed a picture of Lesnar to someone who didn’t follow sports entertainment, they’d say that’s the guy who should be champion.

This would be the least inspired choice, but not one that insults fans’ intelligence. WWE is billing the SummerSlam match as their final showdown, so if Lesnar doesn’t beat him there, he’s out of the picture. Unless WWE needs him again, that is.

Bobby Lashley

Like Lesnar, Bobby Lashley has the look of a person who could defeat Reigns — and he’s done it before, winning by pinfall at Extreme Rules in 2018. Yet an extended program would still feel relatively fresh, as the two have met more often in multi-person matches than they have one-on-one.

There’s a perception that Lashley is charisma challenged, but he’s proved to be a capable talker who doesn’t necessarily need a manager to serve as a mouthpiece. His feud with Omos showed a different side of him as well, as he’s rarely been the smaller combatant.

Holding both titles simultaneously would be a big step up for Lashley, but maybe capturing one of them from Reigns would work. Keep an eye out if Reigns still holds both championships after SummerSlam, as Lashley’s chances go up in that case.

Kevin Owens

Now for something completely different. On the surface, Kevin Owens doesn’t leap out as the Superstar to showcase as an undisputed world champion. He’s also more natural as a heel, with an innate ability to push people’s buttons, and the physically smallest of the wrestlers on this list.

But fans love Owens when he’s a face, and giving him a run at knocking off Reigns would be a very popular move. He’s beloved by hardcore fans who have followed him since his indie days as well as WWE loyalists who appreciate all he’s done since he signed with the company in 2014.

And speaking of loyalty, Owens could easily have chosen to depart for AEW or elsewhere when his contract was up toward the end of 2021, but he re-committed himself to WWE. Repaying that by allowing him to be the man to finally end the reign of Reigns would be fitting. He just needs to get over his Elias/Ezekiel/Elrod fixation first.

Drew McIntyre

There was a time when it would have been laughable to suggest Drew McIntyre would be in this position, but since his return to WWE in 2017, he’s proven to be a top star. He’s even made it all the way to the top of the mountain, winning the WWE Championship twice.

Those two title wins famously came during the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, meaning McIntyre has never been able to bask in the adulation of the WWE Universe as champion. Tapping him to defeat Reigns would be the ultimate make-good move.

When McIntyre had drifted away from the title picture for a spell, it didn’t seem to lessen how over he was with live crowds. The guess here is that he’d take both titles from Reigns if that’s the way WWE decided to go, as he’d be a believable undisputed champion. Clash at the Castle would make a lot of sense if WWE was going to have McIntyre dethrone Reigns.

Cody Rhodes

It’s telling that upon his much hyped and anticipated WWE homecoming, Cody Rhodes immediately made it clear that his goal was winning the world championship his legendary father never did (in WWE, at least). That’s something too big to signal if it isn’t going to pay off somewhere down the road.

That doesn’t mean Rhodes is going to be the one to beat Reigns, but it does suggest one of two things: Either he’s going to get a shot at it, or he’ll be a top contender when someone else has finally managed to snag one or both of the titles.

There is some skepticism that Vince McMahon would be eager to make someone whose career kicked into overdrive in other companies into his top champion, but the same thing could be said for McIntyre and he was given the ball at a critical time. Rhodes needs to heal up from his pectoral injury before we see what WWE has planned for him.

The Rock

It’s been widely rumored that The Rock would challenge Reigns at some point — so much so that some fans were expecting him to appear at the end of WrestleMania 38 to set something up for 2023. It wasn’t a stretch since WWE has shown that kind of long-term thinking before, but the night ended and Dwayne Johnson was nowhere to be found.

Yet it could easily still happen. Reigns spent the week after WrestleMania claiming total victory and focused on sending The Usos to unify the tag team championships. He had the feel of an MMA fighter or boxer who has cleared out their division, with no immediate threat to his supremacy on the horizon.

With that in mind, bringing in someone who’s not a regular at this point becomes more sensible. And there’s arguably no subplot as compelling as having The Rock — who isn’t related to Reigns by blood but is unquestionably linked through the greater Samoan pro wrestling family — coming back to point out how the Bloodline has gone too far.

In terms of mainstream appeal, a Rock-Reigns matchup would be hard to top, especially as a headliner for WrestleMania 39 in Hollywood, where Johnson has established himself as a megastar. The longer Reigns goes with the two championships in his possession, the more this feels like something that will evolve beyond dream booking into a real likelihood.

WWE isn’t advertising Roman Reigns for Extreme Rules in October

WWE isn’t advertising Roman Reigns for Extreme Rules in October, suggesting that it could be a long wait between SummerSlam and his next U.S. premium live event appearance.

When Roman Reigns takes on Brock Lesnar in their Last Man Standing encounter at SummerSlam later this month, it might be the last time fans see him on a premium live event in the U.S. for a while.

It’s been known for some time that the current holder of both the WWE Championship and Universal Championship would be scaling back his workload during the summer months. Yet it’s still come as something of a disappointment when the reality of Reigns’ schedule comes to light, such as when he wasn’t on the card for Money in the Bank over July 4 weekend.

(Not that it seemed to matter all that much, as Fightful reported earlier today on an internal company update touting record viewership for the event and its second-highest gate ever.)

With Clash at the Castle set for Wales in early September, but next premium live event in the U.S. is Extreme Rules on Oct. 8 in Philadelphia. Alas, as Louis Dangoor of GiveMeSport pointed out, Reigns isn’t anywhere to be found in the advertising for that show.

Reigns is WWE’s top star, so if he was going to appear on the show, there’s no doubt that he’d be featured on the post.

Unfortunately, this seems to suggest that Reigns will not be at Extreme Rules in October, an undeniable blow for WWE and its plans.

After Extreme Rules, it will be a month and a half until Survivor Series on Nov. 26 in Boston. That’s a long time between title defenses and big event appearances for the Tribal Chief.

Then again, perhaps it won’t matter as much as it seems now. The oft discussed idea for Clash at the Castle is that Reigns will put his championships on the line against Drew McIntyre. If Reigns loses there — or even sooner, to Lesnar at SummerSlam — it won’t seem like nearly as big an absence if he’s not at Extreme Rules.

All of which is to say that WWE fans should savor each Reigns appearance as it happens, because his reduced schedule is certainly no joke.

WWE SmackDown live results: Vince McMahon to speak, Riddle gets title shot against Roman Reigns

Get WWE SmackDown live results from the Target Center in Minneapolis, with Riddle challenging Roman Reigns and an appearance by Vince McMahon.

WWE would undoubtedly prefer that all of its fans felt like they couldn’t miss any episode of SmackDown, but tonight’s broadcast from the Target Center in Minneapolis figures to have the whole wrestling world tuning in.

Vince McMahon has been at the center of a firestorm this week after the Wall Street Journal reported that he was the subject of a board investigation into alleged payments made to cover up an affair with an ex-employee and misconduct by him and John Laurinaitis. WWE announced earlier today that he would appear on tonight’s show, though in what form is unclear. Reports suggest it could be a pre-taped segment, but if he actually walks into the ring live, it promises to be surreal viewing.

The show should be big in less controversial ways as well. Riddle has been on a quest to get a title match against Roman Reigns to get some payback for Randy Orton, and it’s reached its ultimate goal. Can the King of Bros do the unthinkable and take the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship away from the man who’s had an iron grip on the gold for so long?

Madcap Moss has an even more personal score to settle with Happy Corbin, and he’ll look to do that tonight in a Last Laugh Match. And Max Dupri will reveal his first recruit for Maximum Male Models, probably to the chagrin of Adam Pearce in some way.

Add it all up and it sounds like a SmackDown that’s going to be quite the topic of conversation all weekend. If you can’t watch live on FOX tonight, simply bookmark this page and check back as we update it with the latest WWE SmackDown live results as they happen.

Randy Orton might miss SummerSlam. Who should Roman Reigns face instead?

With Randy Orton potentially missing SummerSlam due to his back troubles, Roman Reigns may need a new opponent. Here are 7 possibilities.

It’s not always simple to tell which WWE injuries are legitimately bad (except for Cody Rhodes‘ torn pec, which was pretty obvious) and which are being played up for the sake of storylines. But when Riddle has been mentioning how bad Randy Orton‘s back has been bothering him, he hasn’t been exaggerating.

Fightful Select reported today that Orton’s back issues “have gotten progressively worse,” which may mean surgery that puts him on the shelf for the remainder of 2022. That’s a potentially big problem because as the article also notes, “Orton had been pitched and heavily figured in to SummerSlam plans, which are now in question.”

For all the flak WWE receives when its narratives are illogical or appear hastily thrown together, it doesn’t get enough credit when the opposite is true. According to several top wrestling news outlets, the tentative plan for Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns this summer was to face Riddle, then Orton at SummerSlam, and finally Drew McIntyre at Clash in the Castle.

If Orton is a no go for SummerSlam, that leaves a big hole in the middle of this otherwise nicely conceived roadmap. It’s one that needs to be filled, too; Reigns is pretty much mandatory for the show, party because he won’t be at Hell in a Cell, and also because it’s the second-biggest event on WWE’s calendar. Leaving both of the company’s primary men’s titles off SummerSlam would be unthinkable.

Working off the assumption that Reigns has to face someone on July 30 in Nashville, and Fightful Select noting that WWE has “already put alternative creative plans in place,” let’s take a look at some ideas on who could step in for Orton, along with some pros and cons for each option.

Tune in July 25 if you want to see Roman Reigns on Raw this summer

The final Raw before SummerSlam will reportedly be the only time Roman Reigns will appear on the show all summer.

As the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, Roman Reigns appears on both Raw and SmackDown. He just won’t be on the former more than once this summer.

Reigns’ reduced schedule has been common knowledge for some time now, even as he holds both of the company’s most prestigious titles. It’s been reported that he would only be making occasional TV appearances leading up to some of WWE’s biggest summer events, and he won’t even be on the Money in the Bank card on July 2.

He is expected to be prominently featured at SummerSlam on July 30, which is no surprise since it’s WWE’s second-biggest show of the year. With that in mind, he’ll be a part of the Raw earlier that week — but it will be the only time fans will see him on Raw all summer.

That word comes from Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, who says the timing and venue are why this particular episode (h/t to GiveMeSport for the transcription) has been penciled in for a visit from the Tribal Chief.

The only time Reigns is going to be on Raw is the Raw from Madison Square Garden. That’s his only Raw booking, the only time the champion will be on Raw pretty much the whole summer.

If that turns out to be the case, it leaves Raw without some serious star power for the next few months. The show is without both Randy Orton and Edge at the moment, though the latter’s injury is part of a storyline after he was kicked out of The Judgment Day. Cody Rhodes will be out for a while as well, recuperating from surgery to repair his torn pec.

SmackDown will see Reigns much sooner, as in this Friday, as he defends the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Riddle. Since Riddle has been seeking some retribution on behalf of Orton, the expectation is that he’d lose this bout, which would set Orton up to return the favor and lead up to his own showdown with Reigns at SummerSlam.

But plans are subject to change, and that’s certainly been true in WWE in 2022. For now, anyway, the Raw at MSG is set to be even more highly anticipated than it would normally be, and might be the only time we see Reigns live on USA until the fall.

Opening Bell: Tribal Chief defends his gold, Jericho has his hair at stake

Get set for the week in WWE and AEW with Opening Bell: quick previews of Raw, SmackDown, Dynamite and Rampage for the week of June 13.

Welcome to the Opening Bell, where we round up what’s been announced for WWE (Raw and SmackDown) and AEW (Dynamite and Rampage) programming for the week ahead.

WWE Raw preview – Monday, June 13, INTRUST Bank Arena, Wichita, KS

The Judgment Day received a big shakeup last week, with Finn Balor joining and then immediately assisting with the ouster of Edge from the group. Now Edge is out with a (storyline) injury, so there’s no fear of immediate reprisals. That leaves the stable free to plot a new course, which WWE says it will do Monday night.

Speaking of injuries, Cody Rhodes suffered one of the more notable ones in recent memory, and he’s now out recuperating from successful surgery to repair his torn pec. But while the American Nightmare said he was ready to move on from Seth Rollins, the Visionary had different ideas, attacking Rhodes one last time for now. WWE says Rollins will “answer” for his attack, so look for him to possibly be booked against some tough competition.

AEW Dynamite Road Rager preview – Wednesday, June 15, Chaifetz Arena, St. Louis

Once upon a time it felt like AEW was getting a little carried away with themed episodes of Dynamite, but it’s cut back on them to the point where Road Rager is a bit of a breath of fresh air. The card is suitably loaded, headlined by a three-way Ladder Match for the tag team titles, with Jurassic Express defending against both The Hardys and Young Bucks.

Chris Jericho is also putting something on the line against Ortiz … but it’s his hair, not a championship. The former Inner Circle teammates turned bitter rivals will do battle, and someone will be bald when it’s over.

Also advertised for Wednesday night:

  • An All-Atlantic Championship qualifier sees Miro go head to head with Ethan Page.
  • Wardlow battles 20 of the plaintiffs in the security guard class action lawsuit. No, really.

WWE SmackDown preview – Friday, June 17, Target Center, Minneapolis

This is a big one. After jumping through several hoops to get the attention of Roman Reigns, Riddle finally got what he wanted by defeating Sami Zayn last week in a match that stipulated he’d get a Undisputed WWE Universal Championship shot if he won. Can Riddle get some payback for his buddy Randy and win some serious gold? Probably not, but you won’t want to miss it just in case he pulls it off.

Also expected for this week’s show:

  • Madcap Moss and Happy Corbin will meet in a Last Laugh Match, which we assume will end the feud between them, one way or another.
  • After running into travel issues last Friday, Max Dupri will reveal his first recruit for Maximum Male Models.

AEW Rampage preview – Friday, June 17, Chaifetz Arena, St. Louis (taped)

Rampage has been live more often than not the past few weeks, but this week’s episode reverts to its more typical pattern of being taped at the Dynamite show for the week, which in this case is in St. Louis.

AEW hasn’t officially announced anything yet for this episode, but we’ll update this post as soon as there’s something set.

It looks like Roman Reigns won’t be on the Money in the Bank card

A report from SI claims that Roman Reigns won’t be working Money in the Bank, making it two straight premium live events without the WWE champion.

WWE Money in the Bank has already undergone a change in venue. Now it appears it will be without its Tribal Chief as well.

Reports earlier this spring suggested WWE was considering Riddle, Randy Orton and Drew McIntyre as the next three challengers for Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, with the idea that he’d face them at Money in the Bank, SummerSlam and Clash at the Castle, respectively.

Riddle’s comments about going to SmackDown and demanding a match with Reigns pointed toward the first part of that plan coming true. But Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso poured some cold water on that today, saying that Reigns “currently is no longer scheduled to work Money in the Bank.”

That could come as a bummer for WWE fans attending the event live, after already enduring a switch from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas (a football stadium, and home to the NFL’s Raiders) to what WWE is calling the “intimate confines” of MGM Grand Garden Arena. The Money in the Bank ladder matches are attractions in their own right, so the show will likely be just fine.

Still, if Reigns is indeed sitting this one out, it will be the second straight premium live event without WWE’s biggest draw. Hell in a Cell managed to get the wrestling world buzzing without him, but that was due in large part to a once in a lifetime act of playing through pain by Cody Rhodes.

Barrasso seems to think all three of the proposed challengers may still get their shots at Reigns, but the timetable is definitely now in question. Orton makes the most sense at SummerSlam, and McIntyre still figures to be a shoe-in for Clash at the Castle considering it’s being held in Wales.

That means Riddle could be the odd man out, which would be a shame as he feels as popular with the fans as he has ever been in his WWE career. It’s not inconceivable that he gets a shot somewhere before the end of the summer on Raw or SmackDown — Reigns is still expected to do some weekly TV over the next few months — but it’s clearer than ever that Reigns’ reduced schedule is for real, and even the big monthly shows aren’t guaranteed to have him there.

The Rock has a clear (by his standards) schedule for WrestleMania 39

The Rock at WrestleMania 39 might still be a fantasy at this point, but his schedule is more clear than usual to make it happen.

If Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson wants to be part of WrestleMania 39, his schedule should allow it.

Johnson is one of the entertainment industry’s most in-demand talents, whether it’s as a leading man or behind the scenes as a producer. But according to Bryan Alvarez on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Live, his calendar has less on it than usual in the first quarter of 2023 — the exact time for the buildup to the Showcase of the Immortals.

Alvarez said that unlike some years, The Rock has no movies to shoot early next year, freeing him up for other work should he so choose (h/t to Gunjan Nath of ThirstyForNews for the transcription).

He is going to do zero movie commitments for the first quarter of 2023, which would allow him to do WrestleMania without having to worry about movie commitments and also have the time to help launch the first season of the XFL. So actually the timing for doing a WrestleMania match would be excellent this year because he has two different projects which would require him to take time off from movies.

The distinction there is important: Johnson isn’t believed to have agreed to anything yet with WWE, but the scheduling gymnastics it might take would be easier to pull off.

A dream match between Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns and The Rock has been heavily rumored and much debated, particularly after Reigns emerged with WWE’s two most important men’s titles with a victory over Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 38. The location is just as fitting as the timing, as WrestleMania 39 will be held at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, with a distinct Hollywood theme.

[lawrence-related id=400]

Paul Heyman recently discussed the idea of Rock vs. Reigns in an interview with Sportskeeda and called it a “fantasy” until Johnson puts his name on a contract. While it’s always good to take Heyman’s quotes with a grain of salt since they come partly in character, there’s definitely truth in the idea that until WWE starts promoting it, it’s wiser to think it’s not going to happen.

That said, for both creative and schedule reasons, 2023 looks like the best chance WWE fans will ever have to see The Rock return for one last WrestleMania main event. Expect that to be a fun thought for many for the remainder of the year, and possibly even into the 2023 Royal Rumble.
